Title: Severe mouse lag in Freespace 2?
Post by: Aerothorn on December 29, 2005, 11:56:28 am
Ok, so like everyone else I plan on using a joystick for in-game control, but I use mouse to navigate menus. I started up vanilla FS2 and entered the options menu to configure it...and the mouse wouldn't move for 5 seconds. It has severe lag and then ends up crashing after a bit. I tried installing the SCP but it's the same deal. Anyone know why this is? I can't change my controls or anything till this is fixed:(

Try running in 16 bit color. Configured in the launcher, check the 'video' tab.

Ok, I'll try that.

For what it's worth, this is a brand new computer with a dual-core AMD 4200+, a BFG GeForce 7800 GT, 1 gig fancy-ram and some other stuff.

EDIT: Tried that- unfortunately didn't fix it. Now it's lagging out/freezing at the sign-in screen. Argh.

check the mouse sensitivity in the Options menu. Either that or you have a wireless mouse that has its batteries going kapoof.

Set processor affinity to single processor using task manager.

Set the processor affinity like phreak said, or use a CVS build (most anything post-3.6.7) since it should have the dual-core problem fixed now.

VSync has been known to cause problems with the mouse pointer and full acceleration.  Go into your video settings and disable VSync, and then try it out again.  Once it's determined whether or not that is the problem, we can help you more.

EDIT:  Theres alot of other stuff you can try to do as well.  Memtest86+, chkdsk, and defrag would help for starters.  I know these aren't commonly to blame, but when they are, the problems are very apparent.

I think I know what you're talking about with the mouse freezes in the menus, which only appear in D3D mode and are related to the popup code. However, it shouldn't crash. Try the affinity thing others have suggested.

I don't think this is an issue with FS2, although it comes up in many other games. I haven't heard anyone complaining about vsync here and it works as expected for me. (well, that isn't quite true anymore, but my problem is unrelated to FS2)

Getting a recent version of SCP fixed it. Thanks!
