Title: HELP!
Post by: nos_mercenary on December 29, 2005, 02:12:04 pm
I have downloaded the Hotu version of FS2 and i have also downloaded the missing vp files and cleared out the data folder of the required files.  however, i have tried to play inferno by putting the inferno file into me freespace folder, and it says that i am missing my freespace 2 CD.  Can anybody help?

One way to solve that is by using an SCP executable (there's one specifically for Inferno, check the SCP forum and you should find it somewhere)), as those don't have CD checks. Don't know if there's any no-cd patch out for the retail game though, never needed one since I bought it as soon as I saw it in the shops all those years ago.

Of course, another way would be to buy it; There are some shops that still have it... well ok, there's one shop that still has it, and FS1 too even. Around here at least, but I'm sure there are some outside of my little corner of the world as well.

Finally, you could download the ISOs and burn them, but I'm kinda against that myself. The game's good enough imo to warrant a purchase if one wants the original. Not that I'm against downloading old and abandoned games as such, I just think this particular game is still worth the cost if you really want it :) Plus, the box art is cool.

Downloads section of my FAQ should solve the problem if you want to stick to retail.

FS2_Open is a better solution though :)

Totally agree with Shade, what he said explains why I put Freespace 2 on my Christmas list, and I got lucky and got it. ;)

I did wat u told me to... but now even though i can play inferno, about a minute into the game a window pops up, the screen turns black, and there's a window says that freespace has to close.  wat's wrong?

Thats odd. Inferno should work with the HotU build if the extra VPs have been added.

What happens if you place the inferno files into a seperate folder and just try to run FS2 itself? You should have gotten the no CD error when playing the main game itself after all.

well, i downloaded the patch, and it seems to me that the main game still works.  i'm sort of confused...

You aren't running the SCP patched version of Inferno are you? Cause I'd expect that to crash out earlier with table errors but I can see a situation where a model might cause this problem.

To be honest I think you're best off asking in the Inferno forums as I'm not too familiar with Inferno.

Would the HotU build be the problem?

Last I heard HotU version was only a "half" version.

It could only go to 640x480 resolution and had low-detail everything, plus some missing files (making it supposedly un-moddable and un-patchable).

I reccomend you download the full FS2 ISO's avalable here or at freespacezone.com

HotU is "half" when initially downloaded. If you download the missing VPs and follow the instructions in my FAQ you shouldn't notice any major difference between the two when playing a mod like Inferno since you basically have everything on your HD that you would have if you'd installed normally and then cracked it to not require the CD anymore.

That said the ISOs are better if you can afford the bandwidth.
