Title: Hi Noob here
Post by: Neilsouth on December 31, 2005, 08:52:27 am
Ive had retail freespace 2 ever since it first came out and i completed it, but now ive just installed it again
to try out the new textures and everything. I got all the files from here http://scp.indiegames.us/download.php
and used the launcher to set everything up and it looks sexy :D

But where to now? , what other textures should i add.... or should i play it and complete it again
then get other campaigns?

Thanks

edit : i dont know what to search for, and many of the searches i have found came up with dead links
problem being so old i guess

Hey there, welcome to HLP. Your plan sounds good; play the original campaign through, and then find some new ones. If you need a list, take a look here (http://fs2.webdl.org) (remember: you want to play Rogue Intentions (http://fs2.webdl.org/campaign-76.htm)).

So yes, with that subliminal messaging out of the way, welcome to the boards. :)

The FS1 port basially allows you to play FS1 using FS2. A lot of people feel that it doesn't capture a certain feel FS1 had but I've always felt that the ability to use the extras the SCP has added more than makes up for that :)

Some FS1 user campaigns have been ported to use the port so they can now be played on SCP too.

If you want to play old FS2 campaigns you should be able to. After all there is no older FS2 campaign than the official one that came with the game :) Some campaigns may have problems though but the vast majority do work.

What? No one gave him the FULL welecome speech?

Welecome to the HLP station!
You'll find a flamethrower beneath your seat, but due many missuses the napalm has been replaced with holy water. So unless you're target is a vampire you'll have to bludgeon someone to death with it. Plasma rifles can be found in the weapons lockers, but they can only be opened by and Admin, [V], God, or a hyperinteligent shade of blue.
If you run acrossa shivan in the air ducts it's probably just Carl. Just give him your lunch (or money) and step away slowly and you should be fine. If not, then it probably wasn't Carl.
Please, for your own saftey avoid mentioning the name of the Unholy One a.k.a. Derek Smart (unless the mentioning is in a negative context) or FS3 and use the searhc function, it's what it's for. .(oh, wait, I think it doesn't work temporarily)..erm... use FS wiki, it's what it's for.
We hope you'll enjoy your stay since you can't leave anyway..no one ever does.

Dear god let it be the last time anyone uses that lame welcome speech.

Anyway, :welcome: Neil

*Warning* You have now passed into the area known as  HLP, warning traveling here is dangerous, so travel at your own risk and tread litely.Warning do not feed the animals,as they have mutated by the agent *Freespace2. They will bite, and infect you with this virus, in effect making you like them.

They may seam sweet by looks, but react very harshly to the words FS3, and those words are never to be spoken, unless your hapless body be shreaded in a moments notice.

You may carry a flamethrower, however it cannot have fuel. The creatures feed on the flames and can do harm to themselves and the area arond them.

Their nature is to eat, sleep and dream about the unknown word SCP,the meaning of this word is not yet known, but they are allways slowly working on it, while getting wrapped up more in it by every second.

Also of note, some have shown intelligence, however they are the most dangerous, as they are unstable.

We have observed three types of these creatures:

The first are the most common the are called the Forumites, as the majority they speak their minds about everything, complaining their likes and dis-likes to the Modders and Coders. Often the forumites and a group of the Modders called the Modelers get in arguements concerning the unknown phrase "canon" however all atemps to figure out what it means has failed.

The Second group is known as the Modders and they are split into two groups.

the first called the Moddelers. What they do is mostly unknown, but what they do is very important to the creatures. They also tend to get in arguements with the forumites and sometimes with the powerful Coders. They tend to do what they want, whether enbraced or shunned by the rest of the community.

The Second group of Modders is the Freders. As with the Moddelers their place and work is unknown. They are rarely observed, as they tend to lurk around. However one of the sports is bug hunting, what kind of bugs they hunt is not known.

The Third group of creatures is the powerful Coders, it has been said they can change reality as they see fit, and have the ability to turn whoever angers them into monkeys. They show the most intelligence, and the community follows their every footstep.

As you tread thru this land, watch your back and be safe, unless you be turned and join this ever growing force of creatures as they try to take over the gaming world.....

Oh, and keep clear of the political/religious discussions in the main forum. They have a tendency to eat people alive, even with their master Kazan having been made voiceless. :nervous:

Another noob here!  Could someone please give me instructions on how to install new campaigns.  I've downloaded some .zip files but I'm not sure what to do with the contents.  Thanks for your help.
Title: Re: Hi Noob here

No problem. There are a few things you can do here, depending on what you have:

If you have SCP installed, go to your FS2 folder and add a new folder with a campaign's name as the title. Once you've done this, either copy/paste the VP from the ZIP to the folder, or, if the campaign came without a VP (i.e. in loose files), create a new folder inside the campaign folder named data. Inside data, add the respective files to their own folders (missions in missions, models in models, etc.). Repeat for each campaign, and then use the MOD option in the FSO launcher to choose a campaign.

If you're not using SCP, this may be a bit more of a problem. If none of the campaigns have overwriting tables, then you should be fine: simply copy/paste the missions into the Freespace2/data/missions folder or in the VP in the Freespace2 folder and you should be fine. If any of the campaigns have mods (i.e. new ships or edited tables), then you'll have to play one at a time.

What campaigns do you have downloaded? :)

What exactly is SCP?
Title: Re: Hi Noob here
Post by: Flipside on January 02, 2006, 03:03:04 pm
SCP = Source Code Project, it's basically taken the released Source Code of Freespace 2 and trying to bring it up to more modern specifications. The most notable differences are massively enhanced graphics capabilities, but theres been a heck of a lot of changes behind the scene to make the game that much more enjoyable, some things that you won't even really notice unless you played the game for a long time or tried making missions (such as multiple ships docking at once) but which are a godsend, and lots more stuff on the way ;) All achieved by the sheer hard work and dedication of our coders here :D

Yeah, SCP is like the coolest thing ever to happen to FS2.

Aside fomr multi-docking you have nameplate support, ballistic primaries (in other words primaries with ammo), cutscene and camera support, cockpit support, improvements in some aspects of the AI (turret code), dozens of new SEXP's (commands and options when making missions..which means missions can be more complex), and a lot more :D

from my FAQ.

Quote
What is FS2_Open? What is the SCP?

From the time it became apparent that there would be no FS3 the most repeated complaint the community had was that Volition wouldn't release the source code so that the community could work on it themselves
Quite a while after the release of FS2 [V] finally did the decent thing and released the code. It was immediately leapt upon by almost every person who could program (and some who couldn't and learnt in order to take advantage of it). An organisation was set up called The Source Code Project (SCP) who took the code with the intention of making FreeSpace 2 better. The product of their work was called FS2_Open.
FS2_Open is not FS3. Instead it is a replacement for the FreeSpace 2 engine, a sort of super mod for FreeSpace 2 which improves it no end. The idea is that by running FS2_Open you can play the FreeSpace 2 main campaign and all the FreeSpace 2 mods with better graphics. In addition to this improvements have been made to several of the games basics to add new kinds of weapons and missions that couldn't be done before. These improvements won't show up in the main campaign but will show up in special "Made for SCP" mods and campaigns.
The differences between FS2 retail and FS2_Open are breathtaking. It is almost like playing a new game. The project is not finished however and it continues to astound the community with every release.
More information on FS2_Open and the SCP can be found in various places in this FAQ. Since the SCP influences almost all things FreeSpace related information about it can not be lumped together in one place.
If you wish to look into the SCP the best places to start are their website and the SCP forum on HLP. You will of course need a working copy of FreeSpace 2 in order to get the SCP to work.
