Title: Connecting PC to external audio device help
Post by: MicroPsycho on December 31, 2005, 02:47:34 pm
I want to connect my stereo to my computer through the stereos auxillary audio port. But I want to continue using the speakers that my PC is currently using. I want the setup to use my PC speakers as they do now,  but when I select the aux source on the stereo I want sound from my PC coming out of the stereo speakers (preferably the PC speakers as well, but that isn't as importatant). Any way I can go about doing this?

Well, I tend to use my standard speakers as surround speakers and my stereo is hooked up to the main output. I use a 1.3mm Jack to Audio phono converter leads, which are pretty easy to make, and pretty cheap to buy, but since I use two computers for my audio work, I have to put it all through a multi-patch box.

Basically, the audio out from your computer goes into the switchbox, and the first audio out from the box would go to the Hifi, the other goes to the computer speakers. Word of warning though, you will lose volume if you divide up the signal like that, a pre-amp is advised, but is not vital.

my mobo uses soundstorm, which lets me use the microphone ports and line in with the line out ports to hook up to  speakers up to the mobo and have simulated surround sound.

Was nifty when I had it, cause it let me do exactly what you're asking to do.

Heh, I once hooked up my 120watt Bass guitar Amp to the Subwoofer output and put it under my desk. Sharon made me disconnect it though, it was making the floorboards rattle :(

extremely easy.  i've done it on my main computer for the last 2 years.  You just need a 3.5mm 1/8" Y splitter cable, something like this:

it'll run you about a dollar or two, and you plug the male end into the computer (obivously), and then the one output to your computer speakers, and the other output to your stereo's AUX in :)

I though of that, and that would work, only the ports in my stereo has 2 holes(right/left) and I don't suppose I could you 2 Y splitters, could I?

well that's a stereo plug, meaning it has the signals for both left and right already.

what kind of jack does your stereo have?  is it the type above?  or RCA?

Yes, the stereo is RCA and has 2 jacks, red and white, labelled right and left respectively.

From the sound of things, you just need 2 straight converter leads thern, 3.5mm Male connection at one end, and RCA Male connection at the other for the Hifi input

all you need (in addition to the above jack) is this:

Well, those are female plugs. If the stereo is farther away, he's need that, and a double-male extender, but if the PC is next to the unit, like mine, he'd use the same part, but with male plugs on the RCA end....

yeah well i figured using a RCA extension cord would be a no-brainer :p

Otherwise you can just get one of these, with two male ends:
