Title: Asteroid shockwaves
Post by: Psychonaut on January 02, 2006, 04:31:05 pm
Happy new year everyone. :)

Is there any possibilty to add shockwaves to asteroid explosions? I´ve tried to alter the asteroid.tbl, but all i got were lots of parsing errors. It seems, that lines like $shockwave_model don´t work there. Maybe it´s a code thing.

Before you ask. I would like to do so, because i think it could look cool. Thanks to DaBrain nearly everything in "my" FSO produces different shockwaves. That´s a weird firework :D

Maybe I should reveal one of my ideas here... ;)

I thought about a 3d model shockwave for asteroids. A lot different than you may think right now. I thought about using smaller asteroid models. Just a cheap trick to bypass the very limited particle system.

Why would there be need for a shockvawe in your average asteroid? Unless it's one of those gas bubble things (like in Freelancer) there sould not be any explosion at all. Ever.

That reminds me... Does anyone remember the thred I started waay back about different asteroid field types? U know, ice asterioids, gas streoids, scrap rosteriodis etc... I can't remember if anyone was very thrilled about the idea.

What about having asteroids that are impervious to primary fire (larger ones ?)
Is this already possible ?

Hmmm... what could this be good for? Random ship debris? Some new flak effect? Giant super explosions? Cluster bombs or...... some kind of gigantic super explosive minefield filling the whole screen with sw???
Whatever Dab, gimme hell  ;7

BTW: Does anybody know, how to add a shockwave to an asteroid?

Simply raise the 'roids hitpoints in the asteroids.tbl... Thought they can still be destroyed, it shouldn't be relevant if the hp are so high you need the hand of god to break them.

Use DaBrian's orange shockwave for the asteroids.

Blue one is specifically for ships, orange/red can be used that way.

You know, I've always wanted a 'dry' explosion for the asteroids instead of the usual fireball. They shouldn't explode, they should break apart and disintegrate. Ditto for cargo containers.

maybe a big thick shockwave could do, something that looks like a donut, but different.  the cross section would look like this:   (|---:---|)  with the : being the center of the shockwave.  then texture it with dust, so you get an expanding dust cloud when the asteroid breaks apart, which should be oriented on the plane that the 2 asteroid chunks are moving away from, so it would look proper from about any angle

Yeah, like an explosion that's realy just a bunch of debris flying apart.
