Title: Some general wiki issues
Post by: Wanderer on January 03, 2006, 12:03:04 pm
I was checking the recent edits in FSwiki a little while ago and noticed that some unregistered person had edited the main page. Effectively turning it into an advertisement page (swimsuits, GPS and other carp). IP trace pointed to India but that doesn't matter... What i would like have is a protected main page like in most other wikis to prevent such occurances in the future. And also protection on all of those templates used in the main page.

And while we on the issue perhaps one of the veteran users should be set as an admin to the wiki.

Little ****er's done it again.

I put it back the way it was.  I guess you need to make users log in to stop this kind of crap.

We can't do anything like that ATM, since admins are the only ones with access to the wiki's control panel. Posted on the request thread.

Ok, who should I make Wiki admins? Gimme names.

The simple solution would seem to be using the forum login or Hard Light login for Wiki editing. You can only make changes if you have an account.

If you are able to block users only, yes. If you can block IP addresses too, why?

Blocking IPs could theoritically result in blocking some of the real users as well. Besides i really doubt that it would have helped against the recent vandalisms or any kind of future attempts as the edits were made from different IP addresses. Even if only registered users would be able to edit the FSwiki ( ) i would like to see protected main page...

Just in case, as it is not too difficult to create new users and using then only once to edit the wiki before they are banned.

If that poster is keeping to his habits we should get another edit in the next few hours, that is if some one can be idiotic enough to edit the same page three times in a row...

Blocking IPs could theoritically result in blocking some of the real users as well.

Especially with dynamically assigned IPs :).

Shame we can't hunt down the wee bugger and flaggelate him.  Albeit I suspect it may be a bot - I mean, why would you bother to manually put that sort of thing here?

The "simple" solution? You obviously have no concept of web cross-application integration. :p

Well in theory where all we have to do is think about it, it would :p

Ok, who should I make Wiki admins? Gimme names.

I'll take it if nobody else is stepping up. At the very least I should be able to fix those category box BGs...

The early bird gets the worm...admin...whatever. :p

Meaning if it's morning, BW, and you see a bird, run like hell in the opposite direction.

I don't see why we can't have more than one responsible person... UT?

Erm... Wiki-admin =/= Forum Admin, in the snese of what I can and can't do.

I don't have access to the basic setup, the stuff that'll let me change the default colour for the Category boxes. I think you might have to do that'n Sandwich.

That may be accessible only through FTP access, I'm not sure. Bug me about this in 24 hours; right now I'm far too zonked to do anything prouctive besides post. :p

Could some one finally protect the main page?

The simple solution would seem to be using the forum login or Hard Light login for Wiki editing. You can only make changes if you have an account.

Gimme acces to the SMF code and dbase, plus the wiki stuff, a week to read it (the code and docs), a day to write it, and it'll be linked. It'll be surely safe enough not to open up the forum to attack, and most likely ok enough on the wiki front.

Once again... This time there are odd stuff starting from hidden valium and viagra commercials... it would good to have such username requirement for the wiki... And protected main page....

You should make me an admin. I'm a Wikipedia admin, in fact. Just see the list of admins. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:List_of_admins)

I think my landslide win (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Luigi30_3) speaks for my trustworthiness. Why would I get that many supporters if I were evil? :P
