Title: Ok, the nodding smiley is starting to get me ticked...
Post by: Sandwich on September 03, 2001, 07:49:00 pm
I hate this thing:    (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

It's even worse in groups:
  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)    (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)    (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)    (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

EDIT: And please remove the flood control - or at least lower it to 10 seconds or so.

Aww, I kinda liked the nodding smiley. I think this thing annoyed me more:  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Thats a shame, Whoever put it up is just messing around with the various functions and trying for something new. If you don't like it then don't look at it but I don't think it's worth a new topic.

Are you mad? the whole idea (and the great thing) about this place is to keep spam to a minimum, dropping the flood control would make it a lot easier for spam to occur. And what difference does it make anyway? Your the first to complain about this.

Public notice: Please email one of the staff with things like this in future, we can then deal with you directly and not muck around with forum posting.

Sandwich, if you want to continue this - email me. However this topic (and all future topics of this "I want this", "I hate this get rid of it", "Do what I want to the exclusion of all else", will be 0wned.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/hammer.gif)

Topic re-opened, apologies to Sandwich if I appeared to be unpleasent, I was in a bit of a "dictator" mood and kinda vented without much cause.

The other reason is he emailed me as I asked and justified himself, well done - I'd like to get everyones opinions of the flood limit time and the smilies on this thread, it might be useful later.

Again - apologies for being unpleasent.

EDIT: However a request that people think about wether thier topic is really needed or could be better served by an email. Thanks  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I agree about the smiley, it doesn't reflect at all what I mean when I put  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif). I'm not nodding, I'm just smilling.
About the flood control, it's too long, yup, but I think it's the price to pay so Snipes doesn't have twice is current post count  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

If you can make the nodding smiley something else, please do so. Also, this smiley (   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) ) isn't expressing what we're really feeling either. If you can make those something else, that'd be appreciated.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/icons/icon7.gif)

If I find some good ones, maybe.  As for the flood control, deal with it.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

You could edit the smilies table and make different entries for those, I don't think it'd be too difficult.

Ah, and while you're there you could add my :sigh: ( (http://terra.sourceforge.net/images/sigh2.gif) ) smilie...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Thunder - apologies accepted and all that stuff...     (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Shrike, as I wrote in my email to Thunder, I was not complaining about flood-control per se, but about a "bug" it has. You see, when I tried to submit this topic, it refused to allow it on the basis of it having too many images (I had 9 in the original message - all smilies). Anyway, I pressed back to remove a few, and then submitted it again. It got caught by flood-control, even though I had not suceeded in posting previously.

Another flood-control annoyance is when I'm browsing in multiple windows simutaneously, and I reply to one topic, switch to the next, type a quick "I agree with whats-his-face" and submit that, and it gets caught.

Anyway, all of these are just minor annoyances, though. I have the feeling that some of this stuff can only be fixed by a UBB patch or something, but I don't know what kind of options you guys have behind the scenes.

In the end, though, I think the annoyance I'd rank first would be that smilies count as images in a post. I've passed that limit easily in some of the more serious topics on the forums, and it's a shame to be forced to hunt through 10 paragraphs of text for that one smiley that you can do without.

EDIT: My smiley request is this, dubbed "doubtful":    (http://michael.randelman.com/smileys/doubtful.gif)   . I've wanted to have an expression just like that for a while now, so I finally made one.

I've posted a topic about this in the staff forum...  I think we want to try and limit the final amount of smilies added, this forum wasn't designed with smilies in mind.

*bump*

So, about the original point of this topic: is there going to be something done with the nodding smiley?

After all this time I'm starting to get bored with it. I'll try and sort something out this weekend, just stop bumping the topic for no reason, I've got it bookmarked so it won't be forgotten.

Kin we have a beer-drinking, belching smiley?

Or just one being eaten by a giant she-rabbit? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

NOBODY CAN TAKE AWAY MY EVIL GRINNING SMILEY!!!!

And as for flood control: I always have RDS or a similar program up when on these forums. MOD in the 10 seconds between posts.

Edit post is A-1  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif)  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Anyway, as I said I'll look into it when I can - hopefully we'll add the new smilies and maintain the old ones in an effort to build up a small archive of smilies for you guys to use. However if not then we'll stick with the old ones.

As for flood control, there may be ways around it, I'll try and get it lowered but if we get spamming then it'll go back to 40 seconds or something. So far we've been lucky in that you guys have been good forum members and not done anything terribly wrong, so we haven't had to do bad things to the forums. Lets keep it that way  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Yes, it is - especially when you see a madly grinning smiley in use by people named after forces of nature and you want to find out what code he used to create it. You then discover that it isn't a :D smiley but a ;) smiley...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif)
