Title: Three questions to get me started
Post by: Vitoc on January 08, 2006, 02:18:53 pm
So I downloaded a ~214 MB zip file and unzipped it.  It created a bunch of rar files and an exe which I ran which created the actual game directory and all associated files.  I can start the game, but there's a few issues I really want to get resolved before I start getting into the game:

1) When I try to do an update after running freespace2.exe, it tells me I'm using version 1.00 but that version 1.20 exists.  It goes and downloads it, but when it's done it tells me:
"Original 'FS2.exe' contents do not match, update aborted.  Re-installing may be necessary."
Any workaround to this?

2) In the game the text messages are moving wayyyy too fast to read.  I find myself having to press F4 after every message to actually read it.  Is there any way to slow down the message speed?

3) The resolution doesn't look all that great.  Maybe I'm expecting too much from an older game, but I'm thinking there may be some method of getting a higher resolution?

Maybe all these problems are associated with me having an older version?  I've tried the "download links" posted in the top couple stickies but none appear to be working properly ATM.

Thanks in advance!

1. Update before you install any SCP stuff. Does it really need updating? Guys???

2. Duration of the messages is set in FRED so you can't change it without modifying the mission. If there is no audio, I wont usually even try to read the text (if there is lots of action) and read it trought the message screen...

3. Did you dowload the SCP launcher? Higher resolutions can be set there. As well as other cool stuff. Including voice simulator that talks the messages in goofy voice. That should help if the messages go too fast...

And the latest build can be found in SCP recent builds boards...

Ugh...  Me thinks the version I got just won't update properly, and in the readme for the SCP fs2_open thing says I should be using version 1.2.  Am I dead in the water until I find a place to download 1.2 or a way to upgrade my 1.0?

Okay. What does it say about me that I figured out exactly what was going on here from the first line? :D

Vitoc, if you post any further questions you need to say that you're using the Home of the Underdogs version (or just HotU) or you'll confuse people :) Prophet thought you were on about something SCP related so you've been talking at cross purposes. Fortunately I recognised your description of the download :)

Anyway onto the problems.

1) Check the downloads page of my FAQ and you'll find the HotU crack pack. Simply overwrite the files in your Freespace 2 folder with these ones and you'll be updated to 1.2.

2 & 3) Both of these are addressed on the HotU page of my FAQ. To be honest I think the first one is too :) As for a working FS2 download link try www.freespacezone.com

/me shakes hand around from the back row.

214mb sir!

/me wants a gold star.

You know, someone really ought to talk to Stryke and get those 1.2 version files up onto HotU.

Oh right. My subconsciousness was suspecting something was fishy in those questions, but meh... The reason why I didn't think of that is that to me, HotU version is a rape. I don't like to think about it...

Doesn't have to be Stryke you know. Fractux was organising an newer version after getting permission from Underdog a while back. No idea what happened to it.

A couple months ago (before I found the HLP) I found Karajorma's FAQ. AMAZING. I got the HOTU version of FS2 (which is better than NO FS2) from a link there, and alot more 1337  (   ) troubleshooting/anything tips. Thanks to Karajorma, and-

To any n00b who has a question: Go there first, post second.

If all else fails, go to the HOTU help thingy (obviously for the HOTU version) or go to the official FS2 readme.

Hope that should make things easier for lots-a-peeps...

Though the sentiment is nice :)

To be honest the more I think about it the more it seems like I should put the new HotU bundle together. I think I can safely say that I know better than anyone else what the pitfalls of the old one were :)

I think that by including the VPs rather than loose files in Data as much as possible we can avoid quite a few of the original problems of the original build. The 3 cutscenes also take up a lot of space and can be replaced by the avi versions (even if we don't include FS2_Open to play them). Plus HotU might be willing to accept a bigger file now that they distribute using torrents as well as HTTP downloads.

Postcount doesn't (or at least, shouldn't) matter - If you're a twit, you're a twit, whether you've got ten or ten thousand posts. Same deal if you're a sensible, decent contributor.

You certainly spam.

well obviously. But the spam is usually stuff related to the main topic that has been already said and/or previeously contradictid, or the spam is ignored or is flamed. Maybe it would be better if I thought more before posting.

I geuss I'll admit that I'm more of a n00b than Zman, after all, he has that awesome FTP site that I got the FS2 ISOs from...

... :sigh: ...

EDIT: man, did get this off topic
