Title: downloading??
Post by: Ratman99 on January 09, 2006, 08:24:00 pm
Yes i do not have Fs2 and i read that on the source code thingy that you can download fs2 on the underdogs, and i went there and when i try to download it i get this page that says Oops, there has been an error!

If you're reading this page, that means you are trying to get the game that IS up on this site, but somehow an error occurs.

You did not seem to come from the right URL. This means the referrer has not been set properly, or you didn't come from the Home of the Underdogs at all. Please see the FAQ for details on this.

This could be caused by one or more of the following:

1. You came here via a 'stolen link' -- i.e. sites that linked directly to our files without our permission. Link-stealing is one of the worst kinds of plagiarism in cyberspace. Please go to the proper Homepage to get these games where they belong. If you are so inclined, please also let us know the address of that link-stealing site, and inform its webmaster of this repulsive behavior. Thanks in advance.
or it says that servers are too busy, but i tried over and over again, or it says something about a proxy server. and so if anyone else knows a place i can download this i would appreciate it highly because im not paying 60 bucks for a 6 yr old game!

It sounds like you're probably behind a firewall...you can get the full version from this site. HOTU has a number of the files removed to make the download smaller, so you'll have to fix it if you choose to go that route

Yep. The Freespacezone link is the best way to go. Or check out the FTP threads in General Freespace.

daemon tools = virtual CD mounting program
Install the exe you downloaded and restart your computer. You will then have an icon in your tray, next to the clock. There you can set the number of drives and other things, and mount the CD-s. This way you can keep the FS2 CD's (the iso files you dl'd) on your harddisk.

You downloaded to the CD? then yes. You should dl it to the harddisk, and then if you want to burn it, you need something that can burn iso files.
An iso is a CD-image file format. It is one big file that contains all the data on the CD. If you put it on a CD, you won't be able to use the CD, except with daemon tools, but there's not much point in that

The CD's are actually .bin files, and are rared, .bin is just another CD image format. The .cue files... you don't need

So, you should:
-Make a folder on your hard drive (I made a folder CD in My Documents)
No need to dl to separate folders
-Download the CD images from freespacezone to that folder (since you have dl'd them already, move them there)
-Extract them (you'll need something to do that, windows can't extract rars AFAIK)
once you've got that, you can delete the rars.
-download and install daemon tools
-you now have a new drive (check my computer)
-restart
-left click on the daemon tools icon in the tray (lower right, near the clock), select drive 0
-a window will open, go to My Documents\CD, and select the CD image (you can select either the bin or the cue, it doesn't matter, as Daemon tools can read both)
-install
-when asked to change CD's, repeat step above

Oh, and :welcome:

when u say cd image thing do u mean the file disc 1 or disc 2 or disc 3? and if so lemmy get this straight, ok so when i download all of them i dont need to put in a blank cd to my pc, but i select drive 0 for disc 1 drive 1 for disc 2 and drive 2 for disc 3? and then i just click install?

AND! when it dl'd i got a file that looks like a white peice of paper, with a window in the middle and it shows some icons is that what it supposed to look like?

and! thank you for being pacient with my stupidity. ; )

No problem :)
The white paper and windows icon is an unrecognized file. You'll need to download WinRar (http://www.rarlab.com/). Install it, and right click on the three files you downloaded, then select winrar, and "Extract here".
What other icons do you mean?
All three disks are CD images. If you want more drives in daemon tools, you have to right click on the tray icon, select Virtual CD/DVD ROM, select Set Number of devices and select the number. Then you'll have drive 0, drive 1 and drive 2
Then you can left click and mount all three images
Once you do that, the game menu should start

and wich winrar to i dl i dont wanna buy anything...

Yes, once you extract the files, you should have the 3 original rar files, 6 other files and possibly 3 readme files. The 6 other files are 3 .bin and 3 .cue files, 1 .bin and 1.cue per disc. I don't know what they're named, but they should be something like disc1. Just make sure you mount three files with a different number :)

Winrar has a trial version, you can use it without buying it (It'll have an annoying reminder when you start it or something, but not when you use the right click menu).

Sorry to interrupt, but:
Ratman99, have you tried to go through the main page in HotU? They strongly recommend you to do so.

It probably just finished. Depends on which browser you use and which version, IE 5 closes the dialog box, but IE6 doesn't by default, IIRC
Check the folder

Are you sure you can't find it? Maybe it did fail, so you'll have to redownload, but before you do that, try searching for it
