Ok, here's the deal. My friend and I have just completed our lan party setup in this old room at my high school. They're all windows 98, so here's what I need.
Recommendations for any pre-2000 PC video games, single or multiplayer, that are worth purchasing to play.
We have broad tastes, anything goes, any style, maker, lan enabled or not.
DOS games will work too; assume for the moment that anything pre millenium is fair game.
DISCUSS!

FS2 (of course)
Diablo 2
starcraft
C&C Red Alert 2
Decent?
TYRIAN 2000!!!
-
X-Com: UFO Defense
C&C 95
Scorched Earth
-
FS1 and FS2 should work great on a LAN. Some of the co-op missions are as good as the main campaign ones.
Several of these games have co-op modes and are great for LANs:
All three Descent games
Unreal
System Shock 2
Chex Quest (anyone played this? :D I think it has a multiplayer mode)
Jazz Jackrabbit 2
C&C original / 95
C&C Red Alert with my mod :D
Total Annihilation
Scorched Earth (you may need Dosbox to get this to work fully)
Rollcage and Rollcage Stage II (may go too fast on newer computers)
These are mostly multiplayer things; I can think of many other great single player games, but the list would become huge if I included those too. :p

7v1c in Age of Empires or Age of Kings. If all the players choose the same player number, you all get simultaneous control of the same set of units. This can get very interesting when people start fighting over the same ones.
Although usually it ends with hard feelings, and a mysterious plague wiping out entire armies and buildings. :(
-
Deus Ex 1
Duke Nukem 3d
the Doom series
-
- Homeworld
- Worms (any of 'em)
- Simcity 2000
Deus Ex is a bit system-intensive at times, so I doubt you'll be able to get it running well on your system(s). But if you can get it working, it's a cracking game.
-
Homeworld (already said) and Homeworld: Cataclsym (if you're into that one :doubt:)
Unreal Tournament
Quake III
Descent I, II, III
-
I'm liking these. One thing though, as big a fan of freespace as I am, we're low on joysticks, down to 1, maybe 2 if I bring my new wireless (Which I don't want to do).
also, what is homeworld exactly?
Also, q3 based games is pushing it; I've already tried.
keep it pre millenium, win 98.
-
Homeworld is one of the best and most unique real-time-strategy games ever made; Casting aside the usual 2D battlefield of most RTS games, Homeworld innovated to make a truly 3D Battlespace. Along with a killer story of a deposed people battling the odds to return to their true Homeworld, there's are excellent skirmish and multiplay modes. Basically, it's just one hell of an RTS, and had a large impact on the market when it was released, earning a 'Game of the Year' award for 1999.
You can check out the IGN Review here; http://pc.ign.com/articles/153/153786p1.html
The sequel - Homeworld2 - while good, doesn't have the same gusto the original had, but i'd still reccommend picking it up as it still has a reasonably sized Modding Community, as evidenced by Duelron's FS2 mod featured here a littlewhile back.

Tribes 1, Unreal Tournament.
-
Trying to stay away from already mentioned games:
M.A.X. (avoid M.A.X. 2 at all costs though)
Carmageddon 1, maybe 2
Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2
Syndicate
Syndicate Wars
[Edit] Ah yes, and Enemy Nations (http://www.enemynations.com/) is fun too, even if the sound makes your ears bleed and it's rather prone to crashes on my 'old games' system. Can't argue with the price though, it's available for free, legally, from that link :)
-
I used to spend my time playing C&C Red Alert 2, Mechwarrior 2, and Half Life 1 (more specifically playing against bots in Counter Strike and Team Fortress Classic).
-
Dont forget these:
Quake II (Quake III was good, but QII was classic in every way, and it's multi was a bit more fun in my experiences)
Tiberium Sun/Tiberium Dawn/Firestorm Expansion
Descent 1-3.
Freespace of course!
Simcity 3000 unlimited
Transport Tycoon 2 Deluxe
Homeworld
Unreal Tournament
Total Annihalation
If it can run it - Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War is nice.
Warcraft I,II and III, along with Frozen Throne expansion
-
Wizardry8 - oldskool rpg
-
Tribes 2
X-Wing vs Tie Fighter
MechWarrior 3 or MW4: Mercs (post-2000 but not very system heavy)
-
aww, man... you guys are naming all these 1337 games that make me feel ashamed that I forgot... :(
-
Majesty! I love that game, and it should easily run. Graphics are decent. It is an innovated RTS allowing heros (units) to essentially run themselves. You influence this with bribes. Essentially you build a city, and wage war by bribing these heros... OK hard to explain, but I highly recommend it!
-
Doom II? With source ports of course. www.zdoom.org
-
What about Age of Mythology ?
-
Total Annihilation with Absolute Annihilation (http://www.planetannihilation.com/aa/)
-
Here's what I have on my comp ATM:
- Stacraft
- Warcraft II
- Warcraft III
- Freespace Open (with Transcend, Sync, Deus Ex Machina, Titan Rebellion, Just Another Day/JAD2, Rogue Intentions, FSPort, Awakenings, and Destiny of Peace)
- A couple of Medal of Honor games (best is Pacific Assault, IMO)
- Homeworld
- Homeworld: Cataclysm
- Avoid Homeworld 2 (it's not as good as only confusing; trust me on this)
- Red Alert 2
- C&C: Generals (still fun, though lacking in quality somewhat)
- Jedi Knight II
- Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds (essentially a Star Wars mod for AOE2)
- SW: Battlefront 2 (excellent FPS)
...
My God, I need a life.
-
That's it? I have at least 60 games on my main computer right now, plus 20 or so more on my retro game system. :p
-
I know it's alot newer, get Call of Duty. I would gladly whoop on you and your friends online. ;7

Are you on crack?! :p
Edit: Dang it Aldo, why'd you have to go and post a better joke than mine!
-
Thanks a heap, guys. I got the pre-steamed counterstrike to network successfully, as well as hal-life. Turns out my wayward partner has never played; he got a kick out of them.
Out of curiousity, what's total annihilation?
-
It's an RTS (1996 IIRC)
