Thanks to sandwich for the beam tutorial  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

So much for the comments about the bump-mapping, I want to know if people want more or less bumping on certain ships.

Common people, COMMENTS!

definitively less on the aeolus, it looks just wrong. Bump had to be used wisely. Now everyone put is everywhere. That's like chrome in the seventies. On the first cars it looked cool. on the last bread toasters, it looked ridiculous. If you put something everywhere it will be dumb, at the end.

True... but in it's defence bump mapping makes the ships look more realistic (if not used in overkill amounts). It certainly looks better than have a completely flat surface (which is just un-believable, even for FS).

I love the render dude, you should use less on both the Aeolus and the Hecate although the Deimos looks ok from this range. The Hecate looks ok to some extent but the closer parts of it looks a little "anchient and rusted" which doesn't seem right to me (it'd look good on a Faustus or something though  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)).

The only other problem I can think of is the planet in the background (use real clouds!) but as the render doesnt focus on it, it's not a biggy. Well done  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I like 'em. Here's a note for you: having lights on a shallow angle to a surface with bump-mapping will create an impressive view of the bump map itself. Very useful.

Btw, work on your backgrounds. You have the potential to make some really good ones, especially since you have LW - ditch Glitterato, find a tutorial for creating one. I know you can.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

What I mean is - stop using Glitterato  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Here - use this...  http://www.ap3d.com/betterspace/betterspace-tut-00.htm ("http://www.ap3d.com/betterspace/betterspace-tut-00.htm")

Thats the exact tutorial I DID use   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)
[edit]Problem is, the 3D background is so large that its nearly impossible to manage the models, which are 1/100000000th(possibly an understatement) the size of the background[/edit]

but still very very good (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Depends, if you want the 3D Model for it, it probably won't work, because of the special settings in Lightwave to make it look better.
If you want a picture I have a 1024x768 version of it, made it specifically for my desktop background.
