It even looks familiar.....

Uhhh.... Mjolnir much?
-
Yes, it's all very impressive till you remember that it can be dispersed by a cloud of steam.
-
As long as we get actually beams and not some "high powered invisible light" **** I'll be happy.
-
Just what we needed. A new weapon.
-
Its a [wink, wink, nudge, nudge]"laser"[/wink, wink, nudge, nudge] beam.
:p :D

What about clouds?

Isn't the space-based "Beam" weapon pictured in that 'artist's representation' sort of... banned by the UN?
...Oh, silly me, here I was thinking the US actually gave a s*** what the UN wants.
-
Doesn't matter to us. The UN isn't working right and therefor should be disbanded anyhow.

WE'RE GOING TO BLOW UP THE OCEAN!

I'll see your Cheat Commandos and raise you a Team Laser Explosion.

"Fire the beam cannons!"
"But sir, someone forgot to Beam-Free-All us"
-
"ion cannon, online"

All space-based weapons systems are illegal, I think.
But they'll just lie and say it's for defensive purposes. Even after they've used it to make a pre-emptive strike on a 'terrorist hotbed' nation.

Care to expand on your broad sweeping generalisation?
-

Yep, there's some UN statute or whatever that prohibits the use of Space to house weapons of any kind, in an effort to keep Space a free, truly international area. Of course, the US might have backed out of whatever treaty it was, I sort of lost track of 'em back when they left the Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty...
Even after they've used it to make a pre-emptive strike on a 'terrorist hotbed'.
...later identified as Democrat Campaign Headquarters.

I presume he was being satirical. At least, I hope so.

I would change a certain "N" to "S"... :doubt:
-
I believe that the whole point of the 'redirected beam' weapon was that it would jerrymander around the UN space weapon treaties since the weapon is technically on Earth, only redirected in space. (it'd fall under a category similar to ICBMs)
-
It'd fall under the category of "Someone needs to stop US at attempting this whole World Domination thing. Or at least the Zionists at any rate".
-
It should fall under the category of someone else should fiddle with it and make it point back at the US while letting them think it's on target :)
-
You guys just have to take every single thread and turn it into an anti-US thread don't you? This is supposed to be about a Freespace technology becoming a reality, and yet you all have to fill it with your "TEH UNITED STATS ARS EVIL AND WANT TO BE TAKING OVAR TEH WARLD!!!!1111"
-
And by the way, the pure hatred of the U.S. by so many misguided forumites i've seen in this forum is sickening. I can see why some people might be in disagreement with us on quite a few issues, but i'm not seeing mere annoyance on these boards, i'm seeing actual hatred, and it makes me what to vomit.
-
You know, I was thinking exactly the same thing, but found the responses rather comical despite being predictable. I love this place. :D

why cant it be both? :p

Meh, I post one bloody news article about something that looks like a Mjolnir...
Everyone's so busy blaming each other aren't they? The UN is failing and should be disbanded, the US are breaking the rules, It's the Zionists, it's the Anti-semites etc etc
Quite frankly, we're so busy pointing fingers across oceans no wonder we are all being treated like **** at home, and the worse we are treated the more we point at other countries.
We should all be ****ing ashamed.
-
Interesting we're finalizing these 'weapons' after, what, 20 years? You can really tell some of the uses were meant for the soviets (ICBM interception, mainly). Cool looking render, though.
-

Actually, if it were ground-based it would be legal until such time as an orbital component were introduced. Redirecting it in space is still a violation, since the orbital mirrors are components of the weapon. ICBMs might fly in the upper atmosphere but that's after launch; they don't loiter.
-
Huh? Freespace 2 tech? Nope.
Its a beam cannon, nice.
But it's not a photon beam cannon. :p
That, and we dont have Orions or Deimoses yet, so the cool broadsides = no-no :(
-
Lasers are streams of photons.
It is a photon beam cannon.
-
So they're going to pump however many billions of dollars into developing this, when they already have the ability to kill people very easily from pretty much anywhere in the world? See, I think that perhaps it'd be nice if, rather than spend billions on ever more elaborate and over-the-top ways to kill people, they spent billions on keeping people alive. Just once.
-
Well i agree with Flipside and also agree with Carl and the; OMG BEAMZ!!11!!111oneone!!1 feeling of it. As iv always said, any tech involving space, space travel, and fs2 style weapons and tech = GOOD.
Tho if we do come up with lazers for tanks and **** i have a feeling we will have a lazer WW3 and FUBAR ourselfs...
-
Antimatter bombs are "GOOD"?!
-
Lasers for ground battles is kind of... impractical.
-
Antimatter bombs are "GOOD"?!
Well um... wont we need them to fight the shivans 32 years from now?
-
This is a very interesting part:
Beason said he has a blue-sky idea of his own, which he tags "the voice from heaven." By tuning the resonance of a laser onto Earth’s ionosphere, you can create audible frequencies. Like some boom box in the sky, the laser-produced voice could bellow from above down to the target below: "Put down your weapons."
Beat's a megaphone any day of hte week :D
-
The pentagon is building God. Thunderbolts from a clear sky and loud, commanding voices. :p

Good to see I'm not the only one seeing this. Though I admit, I'd rather see none of it at all.

329 years from now, not 32

I thought the same thing.
It's all coming true...

I wouldn't say I myself hate the US (or more specifically the US government and it's ensuing foreign policies towards security via global domination), but I am scared of them. It's not very nice when a big country is persuing technology to - in effect - annihilate any smaller country.
Not sure I've seen anything in this thread that would constitute 'hatred' anyways, more semi-satirical expression of the preceding sentence.
-
Beside the fact that it seems perfectly ok for someone to express their desire for the UN to be disbanded, which would throw most of the countries into massive economic depression causing suffering and poverty onto, quite literally, millions of people. But damn that Anti-Americanism eh?

I'd say that this is true to most people around the world. I mean, it is no wonder. When non-american hears about the US of A it's in the news. And that is allways about what country they have invaded, or are "negotiating" to make the country be nicer towards them, or about the US goverment doing other ridiculous (scary) things. Or then its one of those hollywood movies where the yanks/a yank saves the world, or where US quite simply is the most best country in the world and should rule everyone.
These are the images that the media bradcasts around the clock to the world. And every american who belives in that crap (like Bush) deserve to be hated. As for the others (majority of US citizens, as I understand), I have nothing against them...
It's not like there isn't other rotten goverments out there. But US just has the habit of having its hands in everything everywhere. Thus getting to be the topic of many discussions...
-
It's simpler than that. This forum just has a lot of anti-Americans around (not necessarily liberals, just anti-Americans), which is standard fare on any internet forum, but unfortunately on HLP there aren't enough equally pro-American guys to balance things out; the few that are here rarely post or come off looking like morons. It might just be due to the fact that there aren't that many people registered here in the first place, which tends to skew the statistics. The situation is different on the other forums I go to, where you have a nice variety of opinions and lots of ensuing fights. :D
-
Oh boy... Perhaps making an absurdly inflamatory sarcastic remark was not such a good idea...
I'm indeed Pro-American, and I support what the US government is trying to do, but I detest the way it is being done. I think most people fall under this category, and rightly so. There are people that hate upon the US for no other reason than their disagreements with UN policy, and likewise people hate the UN for disagreements with US policy. This favoritism is valid; illogical and sometimes stupid, but valid. During the days of the communist bloc, we were the "bad guys" to them, and they to us. Most of the rest of the world didn't care. It's all relative to a person's point of reference.
As for the US government and UN as of now, there is more than enough reason to dislike either/or. No, I don't believe the UN should really be disbanded (that was an obvious exageration), I believe it needs reform more than anything else. Same goes for the US. There is corruption in both parties, and there is stubbornness in both parties, and I don't see either one going away any time soon. But when they do, and only when they do, the US and UN can be on the same page, if not the same book.
EDIT: Or maybe I'm thinking of the EU...
-

Actually that may not be good. It'll create a new kind of collateral damage...if you can see a laser that powerful than you can blind anyone who looks at the beam. So you'll see headlines "Laser strike on terrorist holdout, thousands blind."
Not a perfect weapon. But for use on a 747 shooting down missiles...now thats cool!
-
I'm not anti-American; I'm anti-patriotism.
Oh, and nuke the gay, French, Muslim whales who are on welfare and having abortions while burning flags and rejecting Jesus.

Well it's obvious that DARPA has realized the actual source of the voices telling Bush and Bin Laden what to do, and now they want their own :p
