Hello,
I had this page long enough in my favourites without any post from myself -> so here it is:P
I love Freespace2 and since i played it on my last new-years-eve-LAN again, I re-discovered the multiplayer!
I loaded as many multi maps as i could find and play em with my best mate in the Internet (we use Hamachi).
Since we tried Freespace2 with Hamachi i asked myself if it would be able to create an freespace2 network in hamachi and get players in it. So everybody can easily play with each other...
I started to post in some german forums but i think the problem is that only a few ones still looking for Freespace in the Internet.
So whats up with you guys?
P.s.: Everytime i play Freespace2 in multiplayer i have to ask myself: WHY THE HELL was there so less multiplayer activity? Ok, there arent many maps! But as you know: it rocks to fly in a good coordinated squad and shoot some big ships down...
That reminds me on : Metallica: sad but true

I'm not familiar with Hamachi. What is involved in getting this idea off of the ground?
-
@first you have to download hamachi on www.hamachi.cc
than you have to create an account and login.
Hamachi connects a LAN with another LAN over the inet. In fact, its a VPN-tunnel (1024bit encrypted).
So you can play the most LAn-only games on the Internet and have youre Windows shares available for the others in the same Hamachi Network/Channel.
Hamachi binds an extra IP adress on your user account wich you have to use to play Freespace etc.
Just download it and try.
I already created a Freespace Network/channel -> Just join:
networkname: Freespace II
password: hlp
-
okay. I'm on there. *goes off to experament*
(man, I'm a chump
-
But I don't want people accessing my network shares And seeing as how XP home doesn't allow me to limit access  I think I'll stick to PXO.
-
so, no idea, lemme get this straight. If you get FS2 running while your connected to that network, and your using FS2 like your playing with someone over your LAN, and you can see and join other people's servers who are doing this too?
-
yes!
but i should remark something: my mate and i having the hamachi IP from the current server configured in the freespaceII->LAN options.
but i think you should see a running freespaceII server without doing this. otherwise: just add the hamachi IPs from the others in our network.
@karajorma
- PXO is down since years!
- windows shares: go and set them offline if you have to. or search a reason for that (maybe you can deactivate the netbios for the hamachi adapter)
-

It's also likely to be back up fairly soon. And FS2NetD might be back sooner.
As for the windows shares it's not the actual shares I find a problem so much as the idea of exposing my computer to an outside network with no idea of who could be out there.
-
PXO will be back again???
When? and where did you get this from?
You just share it with the poeple in the FreespaceII network -> its 1024bit encrypted. so no one else could read it.
never heard about VPN?
-
You miss my point. I'm sharing with the people on the FS2 network but I have no idea who any of them are. And seeing as the password is right here in the open (and possibly in other places you or anyone else on the network may have posted) it's not exactly hard for undesirables to get on the network. A VPN is only as secure as the people you allow to use it :)
Conversely if I play a standard IP game I know exactly who I'm playing with cause I've given out the address only to those people.
-
Thats how to disable the windows shares in hamachi
The easy way is to check the box in Hamachi preferences that reads:
"Block vulnerable Microsoft Windows services" and no one will be able to browse your shares. Unfortunately, you won't be able to browse shares, either.
PXO will be back again???
When? and where did you get this from?
im really interested in that! please go on.
-
Sorry. I missed that one. Aparently there are at least two different projects to bring PXO back currently in the works. One from our own SCP and one from some people in one of the FS2 clans. I have no idea if they're working together or not.
On top of that there is FS2NetD which is an alternative to PXO that was made by Kazan a while back. FS2_Open builds natively support it and there is a retail like exe called Tom's Old Build that also runs it. Unfortunately the FS2NetD server has been down for some time. MatthewPapa is apparently close to solving that problem and getting it working again though.
-
so currently there is no oppertunity right?
-
When do most of the people using Hamachi come online to play FS2? I'm on it now just checking it all out.
-
well thats the problem:
we have to get people in there. i thought this would be the right place for it...
-
I would be interested in getting back into multiplayer FS2 myself, if it ever becomes (relatively) popular again.
-
i dont know how active this community is but as far as i know: its the biggest right?
-
(First post alert!)
I have no idea exactly how big the FS2 community still is, but it seems to have a huge following even after all this time! I mean the Hard Light site has over 3.5k registered users, which is pretty impressive.
It's a shame we can't all get online at the same time, pick someone to serve and all hit that IP :)
-
It's the biggest but Game-Warden is the home of multiplayer in our community really.
There is a seperate community of people who only play multi who rarely mix with the rest of us.
-

That would be a very nice idea at some point, whenever all the multiplayer stuff is working again. I remember we occasionally used to have these FS parties many years ago, where both the PXO and VBB regulars all joined in for one night.

PXO? Back? :shaking: :shaking:
YAYA!!!!!!!
*embarrasses self*
(First post alert!)
I would do that welcom to HLP beam thingy, but I don't think I'm qualified enough. :nervous:

The Problem is, that there is no FreespaceII dedicated ---is it?!
