Title: Questions about FS2 open (adveffects)
Post by: njmartin88 on January 15, 2006, 02:04:57 pm
OK, I have a P4 2.4 ghz, 1 gig ram and a 64mb radeon 9000. I know this isn't the best graphics card in the world but I wanted to test out the mv_adveffects (just to see how it looked, don't care about playing with it). I download it, put it in the fs2 directory, load up fs2 open... no change. Take it out... no change. OpenGL/D3D.... no change. Does it disable itself if you have an old card? Or maybe the changes are a bit too subtle for 2-3 mins playing. In any case I wanted to know if this was normal. Another issue with graphics is the models. They don't look any better than the originals even though I have mv_models (and textures). The only thing that looks different when I remove all the mv_* files is the stars, nebulas, planets and primary/secondry weapons.

Also, from an install from cds the cutscenes work in fs2 open right? I only just got this game because my friend told me it was awesome (how right was he) so I don't know if I'm missing anything.

Thanks for any help.
(Appologies if I'm being stupid here, but I've looked around and found nothing)

Are you playing on the HotU version by any chance?

Assuming you're using 3.6.7, then the only changes should be animated glowmaps and slightly better quality for other things.

Well that's one possible answer out of the way. :)

You should be seeing a fairly huge change in the models but you need to choose the right model. Some haven't been updated at all. On the other hand if you look at something like the Fenris or the Perseus you should see the change straight away. If you can see the little guy in the perseus cockpit in the tech room then it's working (Press CTRL + SHIFT + S if the Perseus isn't visable in the techroom cause you haven't got it in the campaign yet).

As for the cutscenes I have a whole page in the FAQ dedicated to them. The download links are broken at the moment though I'm afraid.

Yeah, I can see the dude in the persius... but still ~30-40fps on a radeon 9000 with adveffects? Doesn't sound right from what some people have been saying. I made another post because I was affraid I posted in the wrong section.

There are a couple of screens in there.

If you were wrong someone would move your post. Its best to keep all the troubleshooting in one thread or you end up getting conflicting advice from people who've only read one of them.

If one of the admins will close this one I'll stick to the other post for troubleshooting.
