Title: Moving fighters around
Post by: Solatar on January 15, 2006, 04:22:48 pm
During the T-V War, or before the point when fighters could traverse jump nodes, how do you think a small force could have gone through a node? Say the GTA discovered a new node, and wanted to send in a force of a few cruisers and a Faustus through to investigate. Would they have to commit a destroyer to get more than the few fighters a Faustus can carry through?

1) Perhaps they had carriers.
2) Perhaps they considered "the few fighters a Faustus could carry" sufficient. :)

Based purely on the size of the Faustus, I can't see it carrying more than 2 or 3.

Bolted onto the sides for a short term jump, perhaps.

Albeit I wonder if the GTA would have even considered a small sized force to capture or fight in a system; from the descriptions of the T-V was becoming bogged down into node blockades, I would tend to suspect that any attack on an enemy system was akin to launching D-Day.

I think fighters can ride along through wormholes created by larger ships.

It would be convenient, that's for sure. However, I don't know if there's enough canon evidence to support that being possible. Evidence for the contrary, I think, would be that if fighters could have ridden in the wake of ships then why wasn't the plan to destroy the Lucifer to send in fighters next to the Bastion (of course, this plan would have failed if the Bastion didn't enter the node, but they didn't know the Bastion would fail).

I always thought something along the lines of the Ma'at freighter (in appearance) would have been cool. Some small deckspace, capable of carrying one or two fighters through a node and then launching them.

I always figured on a small, fast transport-type ship, not too much bigger then the Elysium.

I used this a logicl base for promoting the neccessary existence of light carriers in a S thread a few years back. Most people agreed with me, but nobody made a carrier :(.

Surely this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,37748.0.html) thread name was a clue :)

And I made a larger one than that for SoR for pretty much the same reason.
