I suspect my mv_adveffects.vp or any of my vps aren't working. I have freespace 2 installed from cd and I have freespace 2 open 3.6.7. I also have all the vps. Maybe its worth noting that I have them all in a mod folder which I use, but it was the same story before I moved them. My comp is as follows:
2.4ghz P4
1gig RAM
64MB Radeon 9000
With a graphics card like that I shouldn't be able to get adveffects going at 40fps. And my screens certainly dont look like other peoples. Here are my flags:
-spec -glow -pcx32 -jpgtga -d3dmipmap -2d_poof -cell -rlm -dualscanlines -targetinfo -orbradar -ballistic_gauge -smart_shields -3dwarp -snd_preload -env -alpha_env -decals -fps
And heres a couple of screens (it looks like this in both opengl and D3D mode):

Anyone know why my mv_*.vps aren't working?
PS, I was on a nebula mission so it was easier to take screenies of that.

Try using -ambient_factor 70 on the command line (via launchers Custon Flags: line under the Features tab).

Didn't make much difference. My main concern is that the mv_*.vps aren't working at all because I have adveffects and its still perfectly playable. But it looks nowhere near as good as some screenies I've seen. My ships don't appear to have as many polys either, despite having mv_models.vp.

adveffects really slows things down when theres alot of action on the screen in non-nebula missions. It'll add really intensive background graphics that aren't seen in the nebula. Not to mention, the LOD scaling in the nebula is more harsh, so not as much is on the screen at one time. I have a similar setup (Same GFX and RAM, but a P4 3.2) and I get slowdowns looking at the planet when you enter in "Surrender, Belisarius". It'll drop to 15-20 on occasion, but that just lets me gaze in awe at each frame for that much longer :)
I also wouldn't really be complaining if something runs better than expected ;)

Assuming you're using 3.6.7, then the only changes should be animated glowmaps and slightly better quality for other things.

Also judging from your response on the other thread I'd say that they are working. mv_models is at least.
