Even though the thrusters look messed up because of the black on the textures, I decided to post this anyway. Other than the crappy thrusters what ya think?

Nice enough. A relatively unused concept too.
-
Really cool, but I think a fighter bay would be full of lights, always, no?
-
What are you using to render the fighters?
Most 3D renderers support using transparency maps. Just use the thruster texture as a transparency map, add a strong self-illumination, and you're set. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
By the way, I like it. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

It does have transparency, and it does have a strong self-illumination.. its just that the FS2 fighter engine textures have a PURE BLACK part to it, and thats what screws it up.
[edit]And I use lightwave to render everything except the background, and i've been using my own 3D background lately.[/edit]

if you use the same thruster map as a transparency map, the pure black parts will completly disappear (coz the darker is the transparency map, the more transparent the normal map will be at the same spot)
-
In that case I found it... Doesn't look to good with that kind of transparency =/ lol

boy, those thrusters sure are crappy
-
Well, that is true- from directly behind, that kind of transparency will look strange. That's why you add FS2-style glows using some creative PSP-layer work or better yet, actually model them. I'm sure LW has the tools for it...

Material Settings -> Transparency -> Filter -> RGB 000000

How many blasted times do I have to say "I DON'T USE TRUESPACE TO RENDER" to get it through your head?

What do you use, then? Practically anything made in the past 5 years, and maybe some touching up in Photoshop, would fix yer problem. It's not that bad anyway- the black **** could be smoke, etc. It looks like a screenshot, that's all. But if you hate it that much, use glows instead- second most accurate way to do jets from behind. I am the only one who has the first most effective way (particle generator flames), so never mind that. I can get you some if you like...

Sorry, I just never miss an opportunity to p1mp...
And my own render b1tchings: To be frank, the hideous Fighterbay texturing job distracted me from the not-so bad thruster job. Fix up the skin at least, the patterned stains are ugly as anything.

Nah, I used to ...use... volumetric lighting THE best way to make thruster flames. But next to that, raytracing is a setting quick to render...

Look what I posted earlier in this thread:
