Mel Gibson is insane and will eat your children. (http://www.cinemablend.com/new.php?id=1949)

Well, duh!
-
So we now get to watch Cortez mutilate Montezuma for two hours? :p
-
That's an awesome pic!

Wrong South American Empire bud. :p
-
Oh come on, that's funny. And the movie looks good. Actually, Hollywood needs someone, preferably a few someones, who is not going to just pump out the same old crap and has that whole "We're doomed, in a spectacular, dramatic way" thing going on. And besides, Mayan (it is Mayan, right) mysticism/prohpecy/collapse is just plain cool.

Someone missed the joke.

There is good work that comes out of Hollywood. I don't think Mel Gibson is among the producers of said work.
You know he's also doing a Holocaust miniseries on ABC? That ought to be rich.

ABC & Mel Gibson Present:
HOLOCAUST: Why it's their fault
Only Available In Yiddish!

See, I'm not up to date on the whole "Mel Gibson is a crazed fundamentalist" deal, having never seen the Passion and surrounding controversy. To me, he's just the guy from Lethal Weapon and Braveheart, and anything else I've completely missed or ignored, since I'm particualrly interested in Hollywood gossip and whatnot.

Braveheart was a crime upon it's own merit. IIRC it painted one of Wallaces greatest allies, who died at the Battle of Stirling Bridge after getting gangrene on a wound, as a self-serving noble who betrayed him to the English. And did the same for Robert The Bruce.
-
*snip* one of Wallaces greatest allies, *snip*
If he's so great, how come he's dead?
-
Well, he'd be pushing 800 if he was still alive...

Because he died as a result of fighting for his comrade-in-arms? Hence a great allie as in 'reliable, faithful and willing to die for the cause'? It's not that hard a concept, surely?

Actually, Robert the Bruce was portrayed as a good guy, alltough manipulated by his scheeming father.
And Passion is a great move.. b.t.w. Mel Gibson is original, I'll tell you that. He's one of my dearest movie directors.
And he's not into that "make a politicly correct movie about a minority to get instant awards" routine.

Actually, it was a vain attempt at humour. I was making a reference to one of my favorite Homer lines; "If he's so smart how come he's dead?". Guess a lack of a smilie or [/sarcasm] really matters... :nervous:

****ing bollocks. The man did more than Wallace ever did - won independence (in effect) at Bannockburn and is one of the first and greatest guerilla leaders in history - and he's portrayed as a weak minded, scheming traitor who betrayed his country?
Can you think of any other country that has had a national hero portrayed in that way?
It was a simple bastardization of history to give Wallace an excuse for being outnumbered at Falkirk (where it was probably English longbowmen that won the battle, despite Wallace developing the first effective 'schiltron' strategy to use against English cavalry); not only that, they got the Battle of Stirling Bridge wrong (which resulted in Morays death after the battle was won, from Gangrene), and made up a stupid fictional romance with the French princess (in reality, 9 years old at that time). Not to mention the bloody woad markings and token comedy Irishman (the Irish were hired mercenaries who fought for Edward I at Falkirk, and did not switch sides). Also the hanging of Scottish nobles depicted in the introduction never happened (the English only invaded 1 year prior to when the films' 'current day' is set), nor was there any right - in Scotland or England - for a nobleman to deflower a virgin in his territory. and so on.
What's the value of a history, when the facts are ignored in favour of the audience? How can we possibly learn from 'entertainment value'? It pisses me off, because this still affects people; I once had an American couple come up to me (noticing my accent) and ask if we 'hated the English', because they'd seen Braveheart.
(Apparently, there is a Gibson-inspired 'Braveheart' statue near the site of the Battle of Falkirk, which has had to be placed in a cage because of vandalism; people hate it)

I think the exact same thing when I hear anyone mention the movie 'Pearl Harbour'...

I noticed the reference. :p
Just for the record, Anyone expecting historical accuracy from Hollywood deserves to be disappointed and possibly ridiculed.

Referring to which movie?
-
Let's examine the Oscar winners over the last ten years:
Million Dollar Baby
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Chicago
A Beautiful Mind
Gladiator
American Beauty
Shakespeare in Love
Titanic
The English Patient
Braveheart
Now, while Titanic and Braveheart are insults to the art of film, the only minority I see covered here is the Hobbit community.

I thought Bravehart was a fun movie.
Obviously not historically accurate or educational, but I found it amusing.
-
I'm glad I studied Shakespeare BEFORE 'Shakespeare in Love'. :o
EDIT: Was that a vBulletin smiley? ;)

Quick, somebody call the cops.

I sad awards, not specificly Oscars...and this year counts too.
And if you paid attention which movies got awarded this year...

Do you intend on completing that sentence? Or are we to wait in anticipation?
-
Might you be referring to a certain cowboy film that has pissed off a fair number of idiots while doing well at the Golden Globes?
-
I'd be lying if I said Brokeback Mountain looked interesting to me, but I get the impression that it is a well-made film, and I think it's unfair to claim that its recognition comes solely from the fact that it's a homosexual love story. De-Lovely was about one of the most famous gay men in American history and it didn't get squat, so I don't think it's as formulaic as you might think.

I think he just grudges any sort of recognition for a film with a positive (or even neutral) portrayal of an oppositional mindset.

this thread seems to be rapidly descending into the cess pit. On a lighter note, Gibson looks like Saddam Hussein.. all he needs are some Doritos!
-
Actually I think the thread was doing fine until that little gem of a contribution.
-
Wallace: "You can take our land, but you can't take our national history! That's saved for the Americans you know..."
Generic Noble: "Americans you say? Never heard of them. Hrmm... but we wouldn't need to bother with you if we just went across the sea and sent all of the debtors and religious terrorists over there... more land for the rest of us then!"
*500 years later*
Shrub: "We have a ten trillion dollar deficit, but god loves us remember that!"
-
Hey, I would rather have people bastardize my national history via some more-or-less close approximation like Braveheart than, for example some abomination like this (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0159273/). At least Braveheart makes the Scots out to be noble, heroic, drunken savages, as opposed to just savages.
-
But Sasha the sniper was the coolest guy ever.
-
Was that the same sniper that saw Wilson sitting still, and had the bright idea not to use a Bipod, not to steady the rifle, and not to even take a few seconds to aim? F*** me, and he ended up being so damn cock-eyed that he couldn't hit s***.
Still, you have to give credit to the movie for being bold. I mean, what other movie seriously expects an audience to believe that an entire Mechanised Infantry division (including BMPs, and several dozen infantry) can't hit a single guy as he walks briskly out into an open field, and walks back to an awaiting Helecopter without getting a single scratch?
-
They don't expect you to believe it, just to enjoy watching it.
-
But that's the thing, I didn't.
