I was just looking through my HD and found a couple of renders I've made. Planets suck in all of them because the map's resolutions haven't been large enough.
2 B5 renders, in Blender:
2 FS renders, in TrueSpace:
And yes, I know those Medusa thrusters suck, but I couldn't be bothered editing the scene any further.
-
Seen the first two. So, what are the points of the other two? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
Neato. But those are really oddly colored thrusterflames on the GTVA capships....

Engage brain, then post.

whoa! africa as grown a lot (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif) (turned into a huge desert, too (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif) )
-
No, Africa really IS that size. And you can blame the map, the res is low and the cloud texture on the outer sphere laps over the lush jungle bits. The clouds are barely visible because the maps suck and they seem to blend in with the inner sphere's textures.
The thruster glows just are like that. It's the future (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) The pictures are just the models I've extracted put into some scenarios. Don't blame me for the lack of ships, my computer is so sucky it was half-impossible moving the ships in the upper pic's scene. I blame TS for that.
I figured I had posted those two B5 renders before. I still think they're both better than the TS renders, mostly because I'm much more familiar with Blender.

No way. I have a fantastic map of the Earth (4096*2048, and comes along with bump map, cloud map, specular map, and light earth map, all about the same dimensiosn), so I have a quite precise idea of how earth does look like from sapce, and Africa won't cover almost half an hemisphere as this one does (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

WOW to the first two...

I too have such a map. Smaller, though. The map is correct, so Africa is that large or TrueSpace's sphere wrapping sucks.
The Earth is pretty much a sphere, so it's hard to get the full picture of the sizes on a 2D map.
-
Africa does NOT stretch pole to pole. That simple. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
I really like the first render- IMHO the best of the bunch.
-
I like that one too.
I was working on a big render yesterday, but unfortunately my machine is so crap Blender crashes when I try to render it with any AA.
-
All I can say is the FS ones need LIGHTING (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

The first FS one has 2 lights, the flare, red light, and a white light next to it for contrast. no infinite lights. I can't remember what the second one has, but it's quite obviously too much.
I just hate TrueSpace's lighting system. It rarely works the way it's supposed to.
-
truespace's lighting system works well when you figure out how to tell it what it's suppose too
note on fighter thruster textures: Transparency->Filter->RGB 000000

I did. For some freak reason it kept resetting transparency to none every time I opened the scene. And yes, I did remember to save it.

Ooooooooooooo, me likes the first two (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Hey hey, he's got it, people! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

The one that kept crashing my computer when trying to render. I just took a smaller-res version of it with less AA (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
If I had a better computer I could add more weapons, really adding to the action. Right now the White Stars look a bit like mere spectators.
-
Agreed- it's a sweet render, just needs a bit more fire.
-
Mmmm... I like it. But yeah, more action in that type of pic is good. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
Bah. I just realized you can't even see the Starfuries next to the right-most White Star. Taking those out should increase my chances of getting something good in.
How's the beam and explosion looking from your viewpoint?
-
Sure, you can see those Starfuries. Just takes a closer look, that's all.
For the effects - they look pretty good. What I'd suggest is some point lighting around where that explosion is occurring, and we should see the yellow beam lighting other ships too.
But it's good. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
D'oh! Forgot the explosion light.
Beams need more lights to glow. I don't think I can make a long object like that illuminate the surrounding area in Blender. I may be wrong, though.
But heck, I should have a light on that beam warm-up glow. Seems I've totally forgotten all lighting (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
