Title: Rootkit wrecks world; blamed on pirates
Post by: aldo_14 on January 18, 2006, 09:06:43 am

Yes, corporate stupidity knows no bounds; not only does the CD software cripple computers, it doesn't even sodding work!

The penalty for a ****-up of this magnitude should be colossal. Sony should be fined to the point of collapse for even considering this particular DRM strategy.

Now THAT would be a deterrent.

The whole point of a punishment is to reduce, or preferably eliminate, the possibility of a recurrance. Letting the company survive is a mistake...

Oh, it'll survive alright. Hell, i'm sure Sony won't even lose a significant amount of money because of this...  :doubt:

I'd like to see you try to fine Sony into bankruptcy, as its sales last year totaled $67 billion. For comparison, 3/4 of the world's nations have a lower GNPs than Sony's sales.

Sales != profit, though.

Too late. Someone has already given the money to Sony. Plus with the insurance they'll give money to Sony again. As far as Sony are concerned you might as well have bought one yourself.

If I buy music, I usually just get it from iTunes. It's cheaper, and I'm just gonna stick it all on my hardrive anyway...(plus with the giftcards I got for Christmas I got to get the second season of Battlestar Galactica :D). Some people might not like iTunes, but I do, and I guess it's a matter of preference.

Profit is something around 2 billion, I just chose sales as that's closer in definition to GNP.

iTunes would be liked by many more people if it was not overly priced, proprietary, and used sub-standard compression.  A place like that is simply not worth the money.  May as well buy audio casettes for 12 bucks per album.

IIRC that's a bit of a drop on their usual profit, though.  I'm sure I've read a number of articles about 'troubled' Sony of late.

I wish I could be "troubled" like that.
