Title: AIM Triton must die
Post by: Corsair on January 19, 2006, 09:27:58 am
So last night I downloaded the new version of AIM because for some reason my old version wasn't being allowed to log on. Basically, AIM Triton looks like the worst piece of monkey **** I have ever laid eyes on. Ever. For one thing, it appears to be wayyyy too tied to AOHell. For another, I just don't like it. It must be the vibe or something.

Luckily, I was able to get my old version of AIM working so I uninstalled Triton. But... just be warned, for you AIM users.

Why install AIM in the first place ?  There are far better altenatives out there.

YIM, MSN, hell, even ICQ is better than AIM...

Don't know about the new version of AIM, but the 4.x, even some 5.x version of AIM > YIM, ICQ, MSN

However, www.mirc.com beats all of them if you know where to go and what to do.

Or just use Trillian or Gaim. That allows you to continue to use your AIM account without having to use the official client.

It depends entirely on what everyone else uses. All my friends use AIM so I have to use it.

Yeah... the people who don't know any better use AIM. :/

Debating the quality of instant messaging services seems like arguing over pencil brands. They all send the message to the other person when you hit Enter-- who cares?

Well, peices of crap Like MSN tend to log us off more often than others, and seem to have "errors" sending the messages. There have been times where entire conversations were made impossible because of MSN's ****ty service. Entire, long typed messages not making it to the other party. And this isn't counting the times when MSN was aware of it ("The following message(s) may not have been sent")

We're not debating the quality of the different IM nets. We're just pointing out that there are clients like GAIM, Trillian or Miranda, which can do all protocols.

So you only need one slim client to log on to AIM, ICQ, MSN, etc.

well, i was a long time user of trillian, but it simply ceased working misteriously one day so i had to go back to the clients.

ICQ is hideous cause of the amount of its frakkin ads...

I'd just posted explaining why you don't. :p

Well yeah, but why use Trillian or some multi-interface client if you're only using AIM?

Perhaps so you don't have to use AIM and just use it's network? :p

Bell releases major competitor to IM clients:

Then I think the question becomes "Why are they your friends?"

Convince your friends to switch then.  Yahoo or MSN are much better if you don't want to use a multi-protocol client.

On the other hand, AIM and ICQ are an abomination unto any god or entity anyone may worship (including the spaghetti monster) :D

I have no problems with AIM. It behaves better than most programs I use regularly, and my messages get from me to other people, so I have no complaints. I had Trillian a while ago, but I didn't stick with it because I had to get used to a new interface and found it disconcerting.

The new AIM Triton seems like it's just the 'AIM' that comes with AOHell, not the actual AIM client.

I'm back to using AIM 5.9...French version, basically to get practice in for French class at school. Our teacher sucks to say the least, and it's the only way to really get any use out of the language that I might remember.

He's right. Using something like Trillian combines the two things you want - access to the AIM network where all your friends are, and a far better client to use when talking to them. What's the confusion?!

Don't use Gaim though; it's much buggier, it randomly signs you off (Trillian does it too, but not as much), it's slow, and it ALWAYS crashes. Also, if you want to do anything but chat and send files, then you simply can't do it on Gaim. Trillian you can, but you have to pay for that (the pro version, which has somehow "appeared" on my machine, I don't know why...).
I used to use Gaim until the more recent versions just stopped working properly.
