I've been looking around this site for a while, but i just registered recently. One day I saw a link to download Truespace 3.2, and decided to try it because it was free. I have no previous modeling experience. Anyway here's my first somewhat decent model. It's a shivan super destroyer, post-capella era. I haven't gotten around to adding turrets or details yet and I don't know to texture. So... what do you think?

IT looks much more like a terran ship than a shivan one to me, an odd looking terran ship, but a terran ship nontheless.
-
Spikes make it Shivany, but the whole roundish thing isn't.
I like it non-the less. It's a good model.
-
It looks like a Hybrid Terran-Shivan ship, more than a pure shivan ship.
Good overall design though.
-
Looks more Vorlon, but to compare against other Shivan designs (including non-cannon), I'd have to say a combination of the Diablo and Iblis from Inferno R1.
-
here's anothe pic. for some reason HLP hill only let me attach one at a time.

It looks like some old Star Trek ship from TOS, especially with the big round things and the big laser gun front. It's way too smooth and rounded to be Shivan.
-
Try making the edges of the ridges sharper. More Spikey = More Shivan
and space out the spikes on the forward blades, right now they look more like serrated knives than anything else.
-
It's certainly not bad for an early attempt though :)
Hmmm. Maybe a post for the FS2 Modding section rather than HL Art though :) Are you intending to put the ship in the game when you've finished modelling it?
-
What? No one beam-fried this guy yet?
I would do it If I could recall the image url!
Welecome and nice job so far :D

Very good, looks like Earth Alliance/Shivan Hybrid to me. Babylon 5 EA that is....
-
For me it's more a Vasudan/Shivan Hybrid than a Terran/Shivan...
But it's good :)
-
more spikes eh?

...and here it is in black. It looks way more Shivan now.

I wish I knew how to. I don't have a clue about how to make mods or anything.
If anyone is interested in putting it in the game, I could upload the file. It also needs to be textured.
-
It looks far better in black with more spikes, however, the round bit in the middle could be a bit more angular.
-
Very good.
Try working a bit on the big four spikes to the rear? (left on image).
Also add red texture to it naturally, as is with the Shivans.
-
You know, in playing Derelict again, I have to say that the darkened Lucifer (sans glowmaps) may just be the coolest looking ship in Freespace. Not that it looks bad with glows on, but the errie blackness of it is pretty striking.
Not that this changes your point, of course. It should have red.

two things:
1. there are actually 6 spikes in the rear, and what do you mean when you say work on them?
2. I don't know how to do texturing, except for applying a single texture to the whole thing.
-
This requires a lot of work, but when I think shivan, I think triangles and three-fold symmetry. I'd say go from 4 wingy spike things at 90 degrees to 3 at 120.
-
ditch the sphere
maybe have a more triangular head (think praying mantis), or no head at all
-
Progressing nicely though :)
It definately looks better silhoutted against the planet ;) It actually looks sort of Vorlon at the moment, oddly enough it looks a little too delicate to be Shivan, but still, the progress made already is great, look forward to seeing how this finishes :D

That looks really nice, but it almost looks like the SSD Diablo.
-
I haven't worked on it much but I'll try to post an update soon. :)

btw does anyone know how to use LithUnwrap (I just downloaded it from Freespace Oracle), or know another free texturing software?
