Title: Missing Triton
Post by: kudos on January 27, 2006, 12:47:06 am
Hey guys, I hope you can help me out with this.
Just today, I was trying out the new Derelict SCP campaign, and I noticed the Tritons in it were invisible - only the flame from their engines was visible. Also, when I shot at them with primary and secondary weapons, they went through the ship! This made completing the mission impossible. I also checked to see if this was the case without a mod set in the launcher, but the same thing happens (ie. in the tech room, the Triton has no model).
I downloaded the new media vp's (or whatever the ones were that just came out that were updates, in two parts) and installed them (if installing means placing them in the FS2 folder).
Thanks for your help, guys!

Enable JPG, TGA textures in the launcher if you haven't already.

Mental note, scrap up a dds version of the Triton maps.

Is the container effected by this too?

Why? The Media VP's have them in DDS and a couple of PCX's already.

JPG, TGA textures were already enabled. Thanks for trying, though.

Because we should be able to stop telling people that they need to enable -jpgtga.  I wasn't sure there were already dds maps in there.

Just to be sure, this isn't a variant of the bmpman overflow, is it?  As in this is something that crops up only if you play several missions in succession?

A better question, though, would be whether the triton can be targeted, and if so, if it shows up in the target window.  Is this the case?

Is there any reason jpgtga shouldnt be on by default?

People should really be using DDS textures, anyways. The best reason for using -jpgtga right now is to allow people to easily vary the size/quality of textures, or for more artsy versions.

Yeah, the tritons are targetable and on the radar. They don't appear in the target window.

Ok, so it's apparently not using any of the maps and if you can reproduce it consistantly then it probably isn't bmpman.  Simple explanation would be a corrupt model or texture file, but the likelyhood of the model still being valid or the maps all being off isn't that great.  And I'm assuming you have the media VPs from this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,37272.0.html).   You really should only need mv_models, but make sure you have mv_textures as well.  Beyond that, unless your graphics card is ancient, I'm at a loss.

New media vp's? Ah, I'm such a loser! I'll try 'em out.

I'm having the same problem, only this was in the main FS2 Campaign. I'm using whatever Goober's latest "Safe" build was. I have the 3.6.7 Media VP's 1 and 2 (this wasn't a CVS I don't think.......so no 3.6.7 Media 3) or am I wrong and this is a CVS build???

I've been experiencing seemingly random DDS map corruptions actually - most recently with the Aeolus maps, where nothing changes at all with the FS install, but suddenly one of the maps on a random ship (usually one of mine :( ) will not appear at all, and trying to open it in PSP reveals that it's become completely corrupted. All maps directly related to it such as glow and shine work fine, and are visible in game, but the base texture is just missing.

I assumed this was just some sort of freak error on my machine's part, but if that *has* happened to others, perhaps there's more to it?

interesting update on the  missing triton model:

In the new Derelict SCP, the Tritons work just fine.

But in FSOpen the main campaign they don't.

Any significance to this?

It may just be IBX cache corruption.  If you select -noibx as a command line parameter from the launcher, does the problem still occur?  (Warning: IBX caching speeds load-times up considerably so be prepared to wait a while for missions to load).  Try that out and let us know what happens.

There should never be any writeback to dds maps on disk, so there's probably something else going on.  I've never had that happen personally.

The -noibx flag doesn´t have any effect for the described error. I didn´t notice it in Derelect, but i have some problems with TBP, where in some missions on some ships texture are missing.
There are some other threads, where the invisible texture phenomenon is described, too. I assume it has something to do with the newer builds and not with the vp-files.

It depends on when it happens.  If it only happens in certain missions - or more specifically, only happens when several missions are played back-to-back, then it is certainly a bug with most recent builds.  But if the texture never loads then it's something else entirely.

The TBP issue was due to some of our dds files having non-power-of-2 dimensions.  3.3 and the 3.3a patch will compensate for this.
