Well, read the topic....
Reviews aren't clear enough and I know some people here at HLP have played or own the game.. If you have an opinion, please share it...
Is the game worth the 40 bucks? What abounds in it and what lacks in it? Why is it good? Why isn;t it good?

If you can avoid laughing every time you hear 'Khaak' you should be fine.
...Khaak.

if it's anything like X2, then the learning curve would be steep, me, i'm holding out until something a little more diverse in terms of what you can do comes available.
-
I've never played any of the X Space Sim Games... I've played Freelancer, and Freespace 1 and 2 (even though X3 is nothing like FS2, UNCOMPARABLE)...
Would I like it?
I mean I really liked freelancer, and I've been looking for a good Space Sim Game, and its a little more than just combat, considering FS2 is just combat and escorting as of now... The fact that you can build an empire, fight other ships, convey business, and trade with other people, it sounds like its BETTER than freelancer...
What do you think? Would I like it based on what I told you?
Oh, and those graphics make me drool tons of spit outta my mouth!!!!!
EDIT: I wouldnt mind the long learning curve.... I'll eventually figure it out. Besides, I'm not buying it for the controls....

What the heck does that mean?? Khaak is the alien race.. why is it annoying?

I've a question regarding system performance.
From what I gathered the game was very very demanding on that front, and while my computer isn't exactly top of the line anymore - I do value the ability to play the game while it looks pretty.
-
I'd say buy it if you have a VERY strong system.
For example, I have a Pentium 4ht at 3.2 ghz, 1024 mb RAM, and both a x800xl and a x300se. When I run the game with the x800xl, as long as I keep it at a fairly low res (1024x768) and low or no anti-aliasing, I can turn up all the textures and make it pretty. With my x300se, it is barely playable with everything at the lowest.
So if you have a comparable graphics card to the x300se (and a similar system) wait until you upgrade to bother. If you have a comparable graphics card to the x800xl (and a similar system), go out and get it. While its not FS2, the combat is pretty good, and the graphics help balance out any other game problems. I like it more than Freelancer, even if the story kind of sucks :ick:.

Well you can just test it yourself:
The rolling demo (http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=8198). It's basically a real-time trailer, but you can use it to test roughly how well it'd run on your system.
-
Neat! Downloading now.
-
yea I ran the demo...
If u ask me, it ran fine with a Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz HT, 768 MB of RAM, and an X850 Pro, running on my sound blaster live (My audigy 2 ZS died after about a week of having it so its waiting to be RMA'd)....
I think Im gunna buy it... Along with NFS: Most Wanted!!!!
Tehn some hardcore music cd's... oops, I'm getting carried away!

Any other opinions?

Getting annoyed with the AI in general, too much bumping into things and getting blowed up :( Graphics are a big pain, even on my card they aren't 100% smooth. It looks great, but personally, I wish they'd put the effort into the trade engine.
-
I still think its worth the 40 bucks...
Have you upgraded the game to the 1.3 patch (or w.e. version it is)..
-
Personally I think the game's garbage. The only reason I got it was from exchanging UFO: Aftershock after realising I'd downloaded all the other titles at GAME.
Seriously, it's pish. To get it working on some systems you have to install a full ACE Mega Codec pack just to get the audio to work. Even having the HUD on slows down the framerate by 50%, and there's no way to turn the part of it that slows everything down - the directional indicators for EVERYTHING in the system off. The missions are extremely buggy, the voice acting is almost dire, the station announcements are read by an annoying German woman and irritate the hell out of you, the capships are boring to fly because everything can outrun them, the storyline was written by a four year-old, and the pre-rendered cutscenes will make you want to scream because they were recorded at 320*200.
The only thing that is impressive about this game is the graphics, which are admittedly top-notch. But I'd sooner sacrifice them for FS1's visuals if it meant that they actually spent some time on the storyline, fixing the IMMENSE number of bugs, and advanced the aspects of gameplay from X2. As it is, even on a decent system, the game is next to unplayable and I'm getting rid of it ASAP.
-
...so it's basically the same as X2, then?
-
X2s graphics were terrible though. Polished but terrible.

X3's graphics are definitely superior, and it seems they've learned some in terms of starship design.
-
That said, I'm not sure if they've learnt anything in terms of model optimisation.
Looking at the rolling demo - there's a hell of a lot of girders, panels and what have you. Stunning if you can run it - a pain in the ass if you can't.

UFO:AS comes with Starforce and it's buggy as hell,, That's why I didn't buy it ..

X3
Good points there are so many like the graphics for a start one of the best I have ever seen.
Ships to build and fly are GREAT!!!
Advanced AI
and so on...
Bad points have not found any since i got it on the day it came out in the UK.
My view is BUY IT
-
I bought X3, good visuals and somewhat easy to learn. I'm surprised it ran on my computer.
-
It runs ok on mine, I'm using the latest patch, except when asteroids are involved, or you get too close to a capship that the Lod detail goes to full etc.
I played it for about 3 weeks solid, completed the single player, built an empire, watched half of it fly into rocks or stargates and get killed because you can't seem to have combat groups bigger than about 8 ships without that happening, got bored and stopped playing. Pretty pictures can only keep you going for so long, and there just isn't enough variation in the trading engine to keep interest, the actual trade engine itself, with systems loaded with ships, works well, but theres just not enough to do, and the universe is the same size as X-2, which is explained in the story, but doesn't help much. The galaxy is stagnant from the moment you arrive, no new trade goods, nothing ever developed or created, just wysiwyg as far as trading is concerned, a lot more could have been done with it given the power of modern CPU's but, my usual complaint of companies being more concerned with the power of GPU's than CPU's once again rears it's head ;)
-
I am definitly buying it.....
Already bought NFS: MW and I am obbssesed with it!!!!!
X3 is Next...
Then my August Burns Red CD... Worth Checking out for you hardcore fans on here! www.purevolume.com/augustburnsred

People said X3 doesn't run well with top-of-the-line hardware, so I skipped it - even though the screenshots make me cream my pants. That, and I'm busy with FS2 and Eve Online, with occasional breaks for Freelancer and IW2, another space game would make me go unsane. Steep learning curves don't really phase me though, I learned to play IW2 with a keyboard (I enjoy pain, hence my involvement in the SCP). I'm going to try the demo out, but I think it'll make my computer start smoking, and thats not a good thing.
The only good hardcore-ish band is Stormtroopers of Death. Mainly because Scott and Charlie from Anthrax were in it. "**** the Middle East" is the best song on the planet, next to "America, **** Yeah!". Better yet, it was written in 1985 so these guys can predict the future. Get them, Children of Bodom, Dimmu Borgir, Nevermore, and In Flames if you know whats good for you. And just mentioning Dimmu will bring Nuke in here :)

..bump.. Any other opinions?

What the heck does that mean?? Khaak is the alien race.. why is it annoying?
You're kidding me, right? Say it out loud now... Khaak... what does it sound like?
At the very least it means that the developers are quite Freudian.
-
LOL They are the Kha'ak (Kar-Ark), the apostrophe is very carefully pronounced everytime it's said in X3 but the voice actors kept slipping up in X2 and calling them 'KacK'
-
Meh, based on the intro of X3 it sounded to me like they were still saying 'Cock.'
-
I wonder if they improved the combat system? I played X2 in my friend's PC and it felt more like bump cars then a space fighter shoot out. Dissapointing considering the detail the added onto almost everything. It almost felt like combat was just an afterthought. I hope its better this time. :blah:
-
Combat was, I think, at first the game was designed to be a sort of 'Elite' style game, where trading was most important and Fighting was when you had to survive, it was never X's strong point. Unfortunately, as Ego have had to cater for a larger audience, it's tried to boost up the combat side of it, and it hasn't worked. The fleet controls are good, if a little confusing at first, but the actual 'feel' of flying the ship is wrong, the universe is too small, both on a per-sector and a universal basis. It's not that I don't like the game, but it doesn't feel as free or as open as it was oringinally planned to be in my opinon.
-
I just got X3 Yesterday.... Heres what I can say so far:
The learning curve is VERY STEEP! I couldnt even figure out how to review my brefing over!
Controls are VERY hard to get used to....
You need a SERIOUS Graphics card to run this game... If you DONT have an X18000 Series or a Geforce 7 series, forget about playing this game..
You may be able to get away with a 6800GT (as from what people have told me), but I can barely run the game in 1024x768 with an X850 Pro...
There is NO Tutorial.... Very bad design on egsofts part right there...
Oh, and it has Starforce Protection on it.... IDK if thats good or bad but w.e.
However, this game does have some good parts to it:
Once you play for a few hours, you can get the hang of it..
The Universe is BIG
Its actually a fun game... after you learn it...
Voice acting is OK, nothing to write home about... Even FS1 had better voice acting...
theres my opinion.... In short: Get it, but expect to wait awhile before you start getting into the game...
