Title: I can't get MediaVPs to work for the life of me (newbie thread)
Post by: Ciladan on February 01, 2006, 09:39:04 pm
Hello there.  I just recently installed FS2, patched it, and installed FSO.  I have the 5.3 launcher and the most recent build 3.6.7(?).  I have all the MediaVPs sitting in the root FS2 dir with the launcher.  But none of them work when I open the game.  The models, effects, etc etc are all the same as vanilla FS.  mv_core doesn't even work because the jump nodes are still just a green frame.  I've been over this website, the wiki, and everywhere else and I still can't figure out what's wrong for the life of me.  I've tried several different builds as well.  Nothing works.  The flags in the launcher however seem to work.  It just seems like it doesn't even recognize the VPs are there.  I even made a mod dir and pointed the launcher to that but it still didn't work...  This is probably stupidly simple but I can't seem to wrap my mind around it.  Help?

Well jump node is intented to be only a HUD representation of the jump node and hence it is just a green frame also in FSO...

Are you sure you have done the installation as described in this guide (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/installingfs2_open.html)? And what version of the FS2 are you using? HOTU?

Which media VPs do you have apart from mv_core? Are you seeing the SCP splash screen when the game starts? Which flags in the launcher have you tried?

I've tried all the flags recommended in the SCP website player's guide.  I've also tried it without any flags activated.  I do not see the SCP splash screen, all I see is the intro movie that I had converted to .avi.  As for VPs I have textures, models, effects, and music aside from the core.  I've even made a folder for the mediaVPs and pointed to it as a mod from the launcher.  I just don't get it ><

I installed it exactly as described.  I am using retail FS2 from a CD, not downloaded HOTU.

I was really looking forward to seeing all the hard work everyone did :(

PS: Thanks for trying to help ^_^

Use karajorma's guide. It is all powerful. Follow the MediaVP folder advice.

Okay. I'm mystified now. Gotta try the silly stuff cause I can't see anything you're doing wrong. Creating a folder for the media VPs and then selecting it from the mod tab should have given them priority. Regardless of whatever else you have installed you should always see the SCP splash screen anyway unless you have a mod with it's own splash screen.

You have actually extracted the media VPs right? Cause it did once see someone stick the exe/zip/rar file in his FS2 folder and then get puzzled as to why that wasn't working.

In the very likely possibility that this isn't your mistake I can only suggest reinstalling FS2 and FS2_Open following my guide to the letter. Or you could try posting a screenshot of the contents of your Freespace2 folder and letting us see if you've got something causing a problem.

He's not alone actually. In the few minutes I can play the mission (before I crash from capship explosions, but that's for another thread) I don't notice much difference either. Except for the 3D radar, but that seems to be it. And likewise I don't see an SCP splash screen when I load up.

Can you get us a screenshot of the main directory and mediaVP directory, plus launcher command line?

I found the solution to our mutual problem. 3.6.7 does not apparently come with all the necessary VP files, you need to download those yourself off of the SCP main page. After extracting them to your directory you should see the SCP logo when you start FS2_open, and notice a -dramatic- improvement in the graphics. At least, this is what worked for me when I tried to correct this problem earlier. Since you and I had virtually the same problem, we both downloaded 3.6.7 and the 5.3 launcher and all that jazz, this solution should work for you also. If you have any trouble running the game I suggest you run it under OpenGL since that's working fine for me now that I've installed the proper VP files.

Good hunting.

Thing is Ciladan actually has downloaded the media VPs from what he says so it sounds like his problem is something different.

FYI, if you need to host an image somewhere, look up "Photobucket" or "Imageshack" on google. Upload the pictures you want to post on the internet.

All you need to do then is poke the picture button in the upper-left-hand corner of this post screen, and copy-paste what's in the "URL" field for the given picture. Rinse and repeat for each additional picture. ;)
