Title: Descent fans please read
Post by: karx11erx on February 09, 2006, 05:05:56 am
Hi,

following the recent mysql DB crash obviously not only threads have gone lost, but recently created user accounts as well ... mine, e.g. :)

Dear Descent fans on this board, you may want to continue Descent related discussions on the Descent BB (http://www.descentbb.net), where you will meet a lot of other Descent fans. There are separate areas for D2X-XL and DLE-XP discussions.

That Deepblue is fickle.  So a question to the admins: is Descent tangentally related enough to Freespace to justify colloberating on the Webring?

Why not?  Use the whole Descent:Freespace thing as justification, it's always nice to have cross-collaboration.

Not only the freespace community, but the Descent/Freespace Community.  Could benefit both quite well.

i dont see any harm in allowing the communitys to intermingle. descent was why i got into freespace in the first place. also im told that descent and freespace share quite abit of code. aso i can mod either game fairly well. programming insights may be shared. i did sign up with the dbb but i feel like a newb over there. even though ive probibly been a member at some point or another.

As a long-time Descent fan who first came here long after I started out at PlanetDescent, I think it would be a pretty good idea.  Our two communities have a lot in common, and there are at least several other people besides myself that are active in both.  There's also the fact that :v:'s first projects (as part of Parallax, of course) were the first two Descent games, and that the FS code originated from that of D2.  I think we'd both have a lot to gain from a closer relationship (that is, if Asrale's current Soupe du Jour at PD doesn't create diplomatic strife :p).  As a staff member at PD, I'd definitely support it.

(And please, for the love of God, if anyone has any insights on how we can get our hands on the D3 source code, let us know. :p)

I'll have to check out DBB some time. I have been a fan of the Descent games since '95 and was introduced to FS through that series. I remember all those D1 fifth grade tournaments over 33.4k modems we used to have, and D2 was one of the three games I spent a few years modding.

on a somewhat related topic does anyone have the link to that partially completed descent mod for freespace? i got a rather insane idea that i want to screw around with. :D

If that "insane idea" involves the creation of something like a mine, then by all means, start screwing! :p

yea but i need the mod first. i figuere il use submodel animation for doors. not sure how il trigger them though. essentially im gonna copy descent2 level1 the best i can. also the descent network hosts everey d2 robot in cob format, which should be easy to convert.

You might want to drop a note at Sectorgame's Descent section as well, Hunt Smacker (Hunter) and Hippo are both quite keen players ;)

Okay, I want to design some levels. I used DMB2 way back in the day (elementary school dayz), is it still a reliable/good/etc mission builder? Or is there better I can get my hands on?  ;7

dle is about the same, its got an improved interface over dmb2, so mission design is about the same. ive managed using it fairly well. and its considerably easyer than using a modeling program or some of the quake engine mapping tools. there are some rather annoying limitiations (for both level design and modeling), but i think thats cause of the nature of the d2 engine. its hard to do advanced structures though. none the less its probibly the most fun mod tool out there. just remember to save alot.

Was the bug with the disappearing blinking light data fixed? That always annoyed me in DMB2.

By the way, if you want to see what levels should not be like, here is a collection of my 10 year old levels (http://home.comcast.net/~cp5670/d2levs.rar). :D

Let's just say these don't reflect the quality of my FS2 missions. :D Some are really dumb as hell. The Strange Reactors one has all the goofy crap I could think of mixed into one insane level. Some levels are pretty unbalanced, so you will probably need the invulnerability cheat. The LS ones are relatively decent, although two of them are very unfinished. The lfexcntr one is an older D1 level that has a few texture glitches with D2X-XL.

Looks like I lost a couple of my levels at some point. The XP114R level was a pretty nice one compared to the rest of these, and there were also some of more dubious quality like robot zoo, humans vs. martians, impossible mine and rodent brawl (don't ask).

I also have a selection of 30 levels from the D1 Levels of the world package and the D1 Destination Saturn level from the OEM version. Many of these are quite nice but will probably work best with D1 3dfx.

The disappearing blinking lights bug has been fixed - among a heck of a lot of others.

Read the DLE-XP info pages on my Descent site to find out about what you can do with DLE-XP. It contains a lot of improvements and enhancements over DMB2.
