Title: FreeSpace2 retail caused registry wipe out
Post by: Christopherger on February 09, 2006, 10:56:34 am
Well, I found out what happened two weeks ago when I tried to run
FS2 Retail on my Win 98 SE Pentium III Coppermine 1.1 Ghz, with 40 GB Hdrive
and 512 RAM GEforce FX 5500 and Audigy ZS2....loaded fine from the 3 CD's,
started up with the trailer for Descent III and then got into the splash
screens and into titles ofr the game, as soon as the music started, everything
went black and froze and I had to re start. When i did, everything was gone,
down to the Dos prompst with a boot disk....

accordinig to the tech, the registery was totally trashed.

No idea of why, I will try now on the new AMD system, 300 GB Hd drive,
XP Pro, 1.1 GB RAM, Geforce 6600c, Audigy Z2S, 3400 processor speed....
it works great so far, i will try 98 compatability to avoid the afterburner
glitch which happens sometime,

just wanted to post a warning about the crash, which was pretty scary.
  :)

Like I said before the "wipe" ( :doubt: ) I really doubt it was FS. I've installed it multiple tmes on 4 systems and 3 operating systems. Never had an issue like you did. I suspect it was something to do with Dell software running in the background.

Every time you write to the registry there is a small chance that something will corrupt it. You just got unlucky and had it occur around the same time you installed FS2. Nothing more.

Either that or you have System Mechanic or the like, I've had experiences where SM's auto-uninstaller has fubared the registry, though, admittedly, that was a couple of years ago now.
