as this classical title says I want to gather a list of all TBP freders which are not in the staff...
and if you got projects in the making please tell here.
Why? - Because I want to see who can do things and who wants to do things (even if not doing the Freders Academy) and I want us to exchange here. Currently it's totally blurry who does campaigns (eccept form BHX, HeU, BE and my projects there is currently no word going out)and who can do if he/she wants to...
This should make it easier for all of us to find someone to help him.
You don't need to be the best (like IPAndrews, madaboutgames etc.) but you have to be interested..

Also, of someone wants to give FREDing a try for TBP, there's still the FRED Academy campaign that has barely been touched on.
-
Not much response to this then. Always surprised me there weren't more people using FRED. After all it's really very good at what it does. Even back in the day when FS2 was big news there didn't seem to be a big mission designing scene or anything. It was quite niche. Perhaps it's just too much like hard work.
-
Or perhaps it is that you have allready converted all FREDers in the TBP staff... Like me...
-
It does appear as if you've folded all the TBP FREDders into the collective :)
That said I have no idea why FRED isn't more popular. I think a lot of people think that it's really hard so they never give it a try. Which is a shame cause FRED is actually easy to learn. I've always said that for me it broke down like this.
Time spent learning how to use FRED : 1 day
Time spent mastering FRED : Every day since.
I wrote my first ever mission the day I did the walkthrough. When I look back it now I find it's still playable. It's not great but it works. How many other mission design programs can you say that about?
-
FREDing is also somewhat time consuming... If you really try to do it properly (fred-test-fred-test-fred-test).
Another thing that propably discourages new FREDers is that it's a lot easier to find a working FS_open than a working FRED_open... And these FREDs we have nowdays, are prone to crash a bit too often. That's not a major issue, but can make a person really angry...
-
With fred its easy to learn, but it takes time to produce something of a high quality. ;7 Most newbie freders get right into it to start with and are full of promises. ;) But after a short while they don`t have the time to put into it and just dissapear. :nervous: But at least we have some dedicated and great fredders within tbp :D
I think it would be great if all tbp FREDers clubbed together and worked on an official joint campaign in the future. With all our experience, talents and efforts we could put something together truly awesome! ;7
-
That would interest me. My campaign continues to be made just at a very slow pace.
-
I am not really up-to-date when it comes to fred2_open quality, but could the lack of interest be because fred2_open was (still is?) garbage? If fred2_open is actually usable (shock and horror!) these days, I might actually even get interested in freding again, and that has not happened for last six years...
Edit:
/me notices date of the previous post...
Necromancy!
-
I've been fredding since FS1, (release day) but i only fred for me, I might release some stuff in the future, but i never really felt to do anything public, I done a bit for WC back when it was battlegroup serpent too....
-
Fury!! Look what you made me do............. :wtf: :( :hopping:
D'oh!!
-
For the high crime of necroing an old thread... Fury and Colonel Dekker are to be spanked for three hours, and then are to be locked in to a room with a pack of angry wombats!
-
hah, you just committed the same crime yourself, prepare to be spanked. ;7
-
OK, you what I find daunting .. how to make a mission and all it's necessary files into a vp file that can be uploaded and then face the intense scrutiny of the Project gods. Talk about a panic attack !!
-
FRED werx. Yuze it.
-
FRED Rocks! Always has done.
-
Even when you used to fix a bug in a mission that FRED had added, and FRED would add 5 new bugs as you saved the fixed mission :D.
-
No seruiously , I know Inferno, TBP, WC, JAD, JAD2, Sol-history, a few less monolithic campaigns, Is RW part of TBP Release, Like the E-M Wqar?
-
Wrong thread? No matter.
Raider Wars (RW) is not part of the TBP download. Some people think of RW as the "official" campaign of TBP, but it's not. That honour is reserved for the Earth Alliance Civil War (EACW) campaign. RW is a mix of puzzle and action missions with an emphasis on death, destruction, abuse of telepathic powers, and general chaos. It is also fairly difficult ;).

Ahh, buggery, I tried to answer too many at once, Whilste balancin a quantative indicator tracking audit file worth £42.000.

Maybe you should give that your full attention. Just a thought. :nervous:

I have very rarely had FRED screw up a mission for me. In fact the only time I remember was when I used quote marks in a message and got all kind of weirdness because it considered the quote mark to be the end of the message.
Given the ease with which FRED allows you to make missions compared with pretty much just about every other flight sim ever I'm sticking by my original statement that it rocks :D
-
Are you now talking about FRED2 or fred2_open? Because the retail FRED2 rocks but fred2_open has been more buggy than an old infested house.

Point taken, i've got my PA on it now....

I've never lost a mission with FS2_Open either. The only thing that it routinely causes me problems with is when saving a mission the first time where I use modify-variable on a string variable. And it's not like that isn't the second or third thing on my priority list :)
-
It used to forget about certain variable values (special hits / explosions etc) and ship flags all the time, but that seems to be sorted now.
