We're currently hitting Al Qaeda and Taliban targets
-
Oh boy. War. Maybe we'll get lucky and Saddam won't have anthrax bombs, just nukes.
-
right.. we're not hitting saddam
The British are hitting targets also!

Yep. It has begun. Anti-Aircraft fire has been seen over kabul, along with at least 4 large explosions from bombs dropped by American, and possibly British Bombers.
-
US, Britain and Iran are hitting taliban targets.
the United Front started an offensive
-
True Kazan, I will always rember this day "07th October 2001".
I only hope that the ordanry civilions in afganistan realise that we "Ammericans and British" will provide support and food for them, and realise that we are not there enemys, and that the taliban and al qaeda are evil.

Board notice:
To point this out before it starts, let it go without saying that if this falls from clean conversation it'll be owned on sight.
-
We're giving the civies supploes - the United Front warned the civillians 12 hours in advance
-
You should see the VBB one.
And my point was: we hurt Afghanistan, just cross a little over the line, and we won't be at war with one little defenseless country, we'll be at war with a VERY angry quarter of the planet. Possibly well-armed. And you'd better believe we're gonna cross that line first chance we get.
-
The brits sent missiles from submarines against some training camps.
-
Targets have been hit in Kabul, Khandahar and Jalalabad by Cruise Missiles fired from Submarines.

Iran? Is that definately confirmed?

The Northern Alliance has taken advantage of the situation, and has engaged Tliban forces in the Pajshmir Valley.
-
I just heard that the Taliban still has some man mobile Stinger missiles and some russian SA-6 mobile surface to air missiles. They can opose a threat but i think it is not a great threat.
Here is a link of US troop positions.

The Taleban supposedly smacked down an unidentified aircraft.
But yes, this is it. I'm still holding on to the notion that these events start a WW3. This time it's a whole different enemy.
-
i wonder what the US plans to acheive by bombing stuff - what is left of Afghanistan to bomb anyway that could hamper the terrorists???
-
hey - how do u guys get those icons below ur names and have stuff written below it - instead of "new member" ?

The people with icons are either HLP staff or people that have their sites hosted here. The people that have altered text under their names earned it in some way...or Setekh decides to play around...either way its always something amusing. Speaking of which, didn't you used to have 'induces Vertigo' for your title?
-
Yep, and please don't ask for one - that just gets annoying and makes us want to "play" with stuff (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif)

Well, I'm pretty sure I gave you the Vertigo title, for obvious reasons... I don't think all that many other people would get it. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif)

I love the title I gave MD. Short and to the point. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) As for when I put it in - there was nothing there, before.
This is what all the bombing and military action makes me think of, though - mind you, I just saw Saving Private Ryan yesterday...

Why not? Life goes on, kids. It's not even like we're making fun of the Afghanis or anything.
-
Yeah. But I don't see bombing other people's country as something that can be ignored you know.

it's actually quite stupid to bomb other people's countries in the name of anti-terrorism. how do they tell if it was or wasn't? OTOH, did america have a choice?

America doesnt have to be bombing them, there are other ways of dealing with this. All America wants is revenge. And I'm sure you've all heard this before, "Revenge is a dish best served cold"

I hope they aim better this time. Last time wasn't so "successful" ("http://www.globalissues.org/Geopolitics/MiddleEast/AfghanSudan.asp").

I just saw on CNN that the Taliban is saying that civilians were hit ("http://robots.cnn.com/2001/WORLD/asiapcf/central/10/08/taliban.attack/index.html"), and it makes me thing of something in the book I just read, Forever Peace by Joe Haldeman.
In it the soldierboys (advanced remote piloted robots) are sent to a town to help demolition an old building form them (done to both show the force of the soldierboys, and to show the people that the good guys are here to help them). But what they didn't know is that the enemy forces had hidden in the upper floors a whole school of children. When the building comes crashing down all the towns people think that it's the good guys who did it and all hell breaks loose.
So, in Afghanistan, anyone think that the Taliban is putting innocent civilians inside of their military targets just to make us look like the terrorists?
Joe.
-
"America doesnt have to be bombing them, there are other ways of dealing with this."
Like what
Diplomatic relations; Pakistan is the only country in the world to recognize the Taliban as the government of Afghanistan, and they are now on our side, oddly.
Economic pressure; Afghanistan is already under heavy sanctions from the UN due to it's human rights violations. Not to mention there is little to threaten them with.
Political pressure; they have an amassing ability to twist anything we say into an attack on there religion.
What exactly could we do that we are not already doing or have done?
In fact we have been inconceivably accommodating to these... people?
Not only in Afghanistan but also in Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Yemen and several thousand other little countries that no one has ever heard of.
We are the most generous country in the world, and what do we get for sending thousands of rescue workers into earthquake and hurricane disaster zones, sending Billions of dollars out of our pockets and into the poorest countries in existence,
And what do we get,
Death and hate from every corner of the globe
Airliners crashing into buildings
People happy to die in the name of a religion that denounces their acts if only they can kill us
Mass murder
The present situation in Afghanistan is there because we helped a resistance movement to a harsh and repressive communist invasion, after they beat them back we left them to govern themselves but instead they turned on each other and then on us.

Sure...just like the Iraqi's did during the Gulf War and ever since then. When military GPS is measured in milimeters, how can that many missiles miss their targets and hit a civilian building?
-
Plus, the Taliban can say whatever they want to say. Them claiming that 20 civilians were killed doesn't mean that they're telling the truth. They simply report that to get the American public to turn sour because we don't like killing civilians. That's one of the reasons why the Government pulled out of Vietnam.

Americans gotta understand this. USA have done many, many good things in this world. Especially for us in Europe.
But in other parts of the world USA hasn't always been the "good guy". Heck, USA have almost been involved in every war since the second WW. So many people have alot to be grateful for, and a alot of people have good reasons for hating USA.
Another thing is also when you are on top (this goes for almost everything. Celebrities, computor game companys, politicians, etc), you always get alot of $hit from many people. That's just something you gotta deal with.

Well, as I've said before, even I have many reasons to hate americans, of course not only them. It's got nothing to do with the fact that they never really helped us, I don't care about your help, but they were involved in many events in my country, devastating events, after the second war. They and the russians made us fight a civil war, and americans helped the dictatorship here, and some other things.
I just believe that the americans is the most missinformed people, at least in the western civilization, in matters of what their governement does outside of their country.
As for the mistakes of the bombs: Remember the bombing of the Chinesse embassy in Belgrad? If that wasn't a mistake, then it was deliberate. A hotel was hit yesterday, at least that is what they say.

And even within our country. What was it a few years back where the government finally admitted that they had been doing radiation testing on people without the people knowing aobut it? Makes you question how much of The X-Files is true when government agencies keep their actions secret and classified under the notion of "national security".
Joe.

I doubt they can afford hotel rooms. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
Anyways, I don't like American Forgien Policy, and never have. Of course I don't like the UN or NATO either but that's just me. And I wish the Feds would stop using our military as the mean green policing machine.
Do I really care if this little tiny dot on the map country invades this little tiny of a peon country over here? Noooooooooo...
The best thing to do is to just take some government road contractors over there with steam rollers and asphalt trucks and make the whole place a big gaint parking lot for the big gaint SHOPPING MALL!!!!!!!!!!! muhahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahha

codedog keep the stupid statements to a minimum
as for your opinion on foreign policy it shows ignorance on the reasons why we go into small countries - the first and second world wars could have been a lot shorter if it were not for our isolationism at the time
-
We were hardly the decisive force in WWI. And stick to topic.

Well, I am behind the US 100%...We're doing exactly what I think we should be doing.
I don't think of this in terms of just revenge- what's really important is making sure this never happens again. Thus the new campaign against terrorism in general- the Taliban just got the first attentions, and I hope they won't be the last.
We gave the Taliban time- they rejected it.
We didn't act in rash anger- we took a couple weeks to rally everybody's support. Including countries that normally hate us.
I don't think you can trust anything the Taliban says as true. I am confident that our forces are taking every precaution to avoid civilian casualties- there will be some, but we'll do our best to keep them to a minimum.
Our campaign is purely against the government and the terrorists- not Islam, not Afghanis. We've made that very clear. The Taliban will try to convince everyone otherwise, but nobody will listen, except the people of Afghanistan who only hear what their government tells them. And how long will that last when US planes are dropping food for them?
