I'm about halfway through my Rendering Cockpit project, and rapidly running out of ideas. Lighting, color, and distortion by the glass aside, what's missing here?

Ditto. I got lazy in some parts- but at least with the chair I removed the legs and added something tougher looking.

I can think of 3 things it needs off the hat. It needs:
1. A bunch of safety belts(hey you ARE pulling Gs out there)
2. More electronic equipment(ever seen the inside of military cockpit? Well, there's a lot, and imagine how much electronic equipment would be in a space fighter! The shuttle is bad enough!)
3. The chair needs to be "build in", get rid of the legs, make the part where you lean on go back further. Ahh, in fact, redo the entire chair, it doesn't fit at all. take a look at military fighters.

I would havce imagined by the 23rd century they would have gotten more simple instrumentation designs and controls.

seeing how things are going, I think there won't be pilots in the 23rd century fighters.

In that cockpit picture of from FreeSpace that Venom posted, I must note something.
Notice the HUD? Well, its ON the dashboard or what ever you call that where all the instruments are. Anyway, in game, our view is totally the occupied by the whole HUD.
Here's the ten million dollar question. Does Alpha One fly with his face stuck to the HUD glass?

You know, there are commands to look around out various points in the cockpit, if I remember correctly. It just goes to show you how well designed the HUD is that you only need to look out it to get everything you need.

You're thinking Falcon series, where they have the controls on all sides and you have to turn and look at them. But it's made to compress the screen, a lot of that (like the comm, which is currently at the bottom and needs to be moved in mine) is just NOT going to be on the HUD because that would restrict vision. The view you get in FreeSpace is not ony bigger than that little HUD, it's bigger than your fighter.

Image distorted around edges, RDS makes wide-angle wiews look like camera wide-angle shots. What is missing- specifically?
And its application in Comm animations, needs to be grayscaled:

Hmmm... The TV is a mapping issue. I could get a QuickTime movie or anything else on there.
The maps- ? Dunno what that has to do with a fighter.
Getting a throttle in there is going to be hard simply because rthere's not much of a place you can put it w/o blocking some other control... I'll see
And I was just too lazy to fix the chair at the moment. It's in progress.

No way. Looking at it, i can already tell you the polycount is too high, and it uses intersecting objects. Plus basically you should make a full ship around it (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

That kind of maps, hm? I'm workin' on the dials, everything else IS mapped more or less. Better ones coming if you offer to make 'em- the Voliton stuff is more than difficult to make.
Actually, I did start a full detailed body for it originally, but the computer started getting bogged down so I deleted the rest and stuck to the cockpit. Plus, the body was one of mine, and I get sick of making Sol-exclusive stuff reom time to time.
