I had to switch accounts thanks to my dads work paying the bills now, and I've lost my (sniff) old site. So are there any recommendations for completely and utterly free hosting with no ads? Fat chance, I realise, but figure I might as well ask........ I'd actually love to be able to do work with servlets and database access on my/a website, but I guess that scenario is pretty unlikely unless I open my wallet.

Atspace (http://atspace.com/) might be and option if you don't need too much space for your site. Free and no ads that i've noticed, but only 50mb to play with.

I'd read the terms they have their first though.
You could prob get hooked up at SG aldo...

Indeed, always read the terms. Especially the small print (if there is any... if there isn't, look harder).

Well, I could just lump it up onto the SG webspace I use for Lost Souls, but I'd rather have a seperate personal website.

The GTD Bastion has lots of webspace, and free subdomains. >..>

Not too sure on totally free stuff, but good deals can be had for a tenner a year, if you aren't hosting bandwidth consuming stuff.

Dreamhost (http://www.dreamhost.com/rewards.cgi?matthewpapa)
The best. I use them for game warden. Highly reliable and lots of bang for the buck.

Dunno if it has ads or not because I haven't created a webpage on it (I just use it to host random files), but I use www.fileh.com :)

perhaps http://pages.google.com
haven't had the energy to check that shiznit out yet, tho.

Slow.....as.....something that goes really slow.
http://www.mher.org plans start at 0.99 cents, the service is great, used them for a while myself.

How much bandwidth are you looking to use? If the answer is "not a lot", then you should take a look at Nearly Free Speech (https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/"). I've had my **** up there for about 3 weeks, and so far I have used $0.04. It's pay as you hosting, $1/gig of bandwidth and $0.01 per megabyte of storage per month. Like the name says, not free but it's damn close (if you don't intend to have huge amounts of traffic).

Yeah, that just came out today. Web-based WYSIWYG editor, 100meg storage and no bandwith limits (I'm guessing), all for free. The trouble is it got so popular, they recieved too many hits and had to shut down new applications for the day. I'm on the waiting list, just because I want to check it out.

good, cheap host, i was doing some research on web hosts last year, and this turned out to be the best "bang for buck"

i WOULD plug swooh right now, but we're not offering hosting on it at this time. nonetheless, it's worth mentioning that it hasn't been down once in over 6 months, and it's on a 20Mb link ;)
...except for that time when someone pulled the plug on it *grumbles*

Swooh?

I keep saying the wiki needs a history section for us newcomers. :D
