Title: PC Gamer mention us again.
Post by: karajorma on February 26, 2006, 01:00:39 pm
Well I don't know how new this is to most of you but I never saw a picture of this article :)

Seems to do a much better job in terms of errors than the last one. I suppose refering to the Ravana as cruiser could be considered as simply putting things in RL terms for those who don't play FS2 rather than an actual error.

Although I do wish they had pointed here rather than VW. Maybe HLP was down when they were looking for links.

So much exposure lately.

He called cyclops torpedoes

Cool nonetheless

Aren't they "Cyclops Torpedoes"?

Probably because it's the fourth search result on google for "freespace 2", falling behind official games sites, and HLP appears nowhere on the first page.

Why does it say in the mini FS2 thing on the left, that FS2 was made in 2002. :p

I also like how the Anuket is supposedly a capital ship (although, admittedly, it does look the part in that screenshot). :p Still, great article.  That's the exact same way that I felt when playing "Slaying Ravana."  It really reminds me of when I first played through FS1; my younger brother would watch me and act as a wingman, calling out my shield and hull status and the damage of any escorts.  Good times. :)

the box in the lower left corner of the page where it says "the story so far". i think he is playing through the whole campaign and he is reporting how far he has come. it hink this not the last time freespace 2 will get exposure in that magazine

Nah, it's there as a recap of the games' history.  Not that it precludes further mentions of the game, of course.

Usually they're paid to do good reviews. When you aren't paying them, I guess you have to settle for what you get.

It really makes you wonder how often errors like those present here are made across the board in their magazine, and others like it.

That's as maybe.. but it kinda implies that they're incapable of being accurate if there's no money involved. Heck... if I played some game I'd never played before (lets say Eve for example) and I was writing an unpaid review of my starting moments in-game... I'm fairly sure I could get the terminology right.

If it's going to print, I doubt an extra half an hour to check the accuracy of the terms is going to kill anyone.

That said.. whatever, this kind of thing really doesn't affect me that much.

To be fair, neither 'cruiser' nor 'torpedo' are really that important mistakes, because they also have clear meaning in the cultural lexicon; and it's more important to relate game concepts to that than use the exact terms from the game.  Although getting the release year wrong is rather daft.
Title: Re: PC Gamer mention us again.
Post by: FireCrack on February 27, 2006, 06:30:23 am
Torpedo isn't even a mistake. The cyclops is an anti-cruiser torpedo.
Title: Re: PC Gamer mention us again.
Post by: karajorma on February 27, 2006, 06:41:36 am
Won't do us any harm to get the year wrong. And more people will probably try a game from 2002 than one from 1999 so it may actually pursuade more people to try it.

Plus they even mention the SCP in passing so we shouldn't complain :)
Title: Re: PC Gamer mention us again.
Post by: Shade on February 27, 2006, 08:51:17 am
2002 could be a case of mistaking the release of the source for the release of the game. That was in 2002 wasn't it?

Torpedo isn't even a mistake. The cyclops is an anti-cruiser torpedo.

Lt. Samsa also calls it a torpedo in Slaying Ravana as well.

Melikes this article even better, since I feel that it reasonably captures the feel of a Volition-made bombing mission. :)

lolz

look at the picture

Since when was a gas miner 'leviathan'
or at that even a 'capitol' ship?

Anyway, its still cool that this game gets recognition today. How many other 1999 games are mentioned in gaming magazines in 2005/2006? ( I mean have their own article)
Title: Re: PC Gamer mention us again.
Post by: FireCrack on February 27, 2006, 01:13:33 pm
Theres kinda an implication that the hygeia is a bomber from that.

Also, i cant help but notice the lack of SCP

Since when was a gas miner 'leviathan'

I believe he was referring to it in the sense that a cruiser is one of the beasts of the FS universe, much like the Leviathan serpent. Note the lowercaseness of leviathan in the caption as well.

Well then how's about you go pimp up some linkage to HLP on FSW's front page, eh? ;)
Title: Re: PC Gamer mention us again.

We could use a more prominent link to this place on the SCP website too, for that matter. If you go to the forum link there, it makes it looks like the project is dead.

What's your problem with the article.

Imo it's just fine if it's not 100% correct. It doesn't really matter whether he names a ship class right, or not. He really caught the feeling of the gameplay pretty good in his article.

I'm glad the community effort was mentioned. :)
Title: Re: PC Gamer mention us again.

Exactly. The only actual mistake he made was getting the date wrong.

Note the lowercaseness of leviathan in the caption as well.
I knew he ment leviathan as in 'big' not as in the cruiser.
sheesh

So, Mr. Ace, can you guys still edit content on the Volition Watch website? A big, fat link to HLP, or at least a more recent news article saying you're closing and directing to us would be nice. ;)

VW's servers have never really changed. If I hadn't lost the information I'msure I could still log into the United Space webspace.

IceFire or Orange are the people to ask. I didn't do much on the admin side myself, and I don't know what the current status of the site is to be honest.

i wish someone would pick up the damned game and make fs3. Sorta how xenogears got screwed over but xenosaga managed to salvage the series and sorta continue it....though different story, there were enough references in the game to A. legally not get them screwed over, and B. enough to still give you the xenogears feeling...sorta...they coulda done a way better job but can't complain :p
so ya...even if it wasn't f2 quality, its better then nothing....assuming its not total crap!

If it isn't made by :v: it's no more FS3 than any of the campaigns hosted here.

Might as well make a completely new game staying true to the elements that made FS great instead.

There's one problem I can see with someone doing FS3.  They'll do it, and it'll come out and it won't look nearly as good as the SCP does.  I mean let's face it, the SCP sets a standard basically and if they can''t surpass what the current fans see on an everyday basis then they don't have a lot of new hope  for selling to enough people to make it profitable.  I mean it's like "pfft I was looking at that kind of stuff last year, what else ya got?" What I think is that the SCP set the bar so high is that any cost of making a FS3 with what the fanbase expects as a minimum graphics wise might outweigh the revenue it would create.  However I haven't seen anything really since X2 or X3 that is even a decent space sim play and those have a ton of bugs that almost make them unplayable.  So there is a market there however.

Post by: castor on March 04, 2006, 04:53:44 am
I don't think it really matters how it would compare to SCP.
To make it a success story, they would need to sell it to loads of people never heard about SCP (or even FS2) before.

Let's face it, even if FS3 does get made, by anyone, it will never ever live up to our expectations, how could it? We all have our own idea of how it would look and play, and it would be impossible for it to live up to everyone here's expectations.

The recent increase in interest in the game is as much because of people looking back to the good old days when computer games were original (though there are those that would argue that FS2 was simply the top of a Pyramid based on X-Wing, Wing Commander etc). Maybe that will spark a flame, maybe it won't, but even if it does, the story cannot fulfill everyone's dreams for the finale of the Freespace saga.

hi,
i mean, all games with more parts as one have this problem, if primarily the time between the parts are really great (more as 2 years).
but i think to say: a new part can never reach our expectations its wrong.

yes, its probably not this story / or exactly that story /game what we dream, but how i say, that problem have all game-series.
if the story and the quality of the game are good, i see there no real problems for the most players to accept this new story and game.

so i mean, the main problem is the quality of the story and the game for a officell FS3, not a FS3 itself.
