Just wondering, since I've never looked at this before, are there any share/freeware programs that allow you to monitor the internal temperature of your CPU/Graphics card etc? I'm a bit fed up with my system freezing up during Eve, one day it's going to get me killed, so I'd like to know what it is that's playing up.
I know this might seem like an obvious question, but it's only on the newest rig that I've ever had to be concerned about heat before.
-
Usually the mainboard comes shipped with some hardware monitoring tools on an CD.
-
Ah right :) Complete N00b when it comes to hardware related stuff really :(
Time to go hiking in 'CD Mountain' again I guess ;)
-
Motherboard Monitor and Rivatuner do a pretty good job of this for me.
-
If you have an ATI card, ATITool will monitor the temp. probe, IF your card has the appropriate chip.
MBM works well, even though it's been out of development for a year or so. A newer program, though not as user-friendly IMO, is Speedfan, and works quite well.
-
Alas, I have a GeForce card, which I think is part of the problem, stupid wimpy plastic fans FTL :(
I'm using SpeedFan atm, my Video card idles at 45'C and hits 62'C when Eve is running, that's with the Desk fan blowing onto it. Not good.
-
nVidia cards have a monitoring solution built in, assuming you're not doing something foolish like using the standard Windows drivers. Go to Display -> Settings -> Advanced, then click the nVidia tab.

Any of the newer nVidia and ATI cards have built in temperature sensors. Its surely in your drivers somewhere.

I've got the latest drivers, and I've been checking throughthe options, but can't seem to find temperature stuff anywhere. I'll keep looking though, knowing my luck, it's right under my nose :/
-
If it's not showing up, you may need the coolbits registry hack (http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=815). The control panel only shows the current temperature though. Rivatuner is better since it shows a graph of the last five minutes. The temperatures on some modern cards tend to change very quickly (if you play a game and close it down, there is often a 5C or larger drop during just those few seconds), so this graph is more useful than just the current reading.
-
Question that should have been asked earlier: As you mentioned a "wimpy plastic fan", what generation GeForce do you have?
-
lol
remember the days when video cards (and even CPUs to some extent) diddnt even need fans?

Yep, got an old ATI Rage Pro 8MB, doesn't even mave a heatsink. :D
-
All I know about the card is that it's a 6600 256Mb
The Bios revision is 5.43.02.66.52 if that helps.
And yeah, this is the first graphics card I've ever owned that had a fan on it. Ironic somehow that it should be the first Grpahics card I've ever owned that keeps overheating really.
-
oh, if I remember correctly, the vanilla 6600 doesn't have the temp sensor enabled for some stupid reason, even though it's present in the core. There is a BIOS mod you can do to enable it: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=2379

I remember those days especially well, since my latest insane project involves putting two computers in one case and one of them was going to be a K6-2 since it generates so little heat.
Shame that the mainboard technology from those days is so prone to failing.
Anyone want to guess the running temperature of a pair of Athlon-era CPUs in the same case, when said case is packed full of cables, circuit boards, drives and bastardised fan mounts?

Fire?
-
No, not fire...just it would shut off every minute because of the overheat. If you went and over-rided the shutoff, then maybe you'd get a fire. At least, I think the Athlon has shut-offs.
-
Athlons, like athlon XP's? Because my XP 2800+ runs ~ 50c generally, IIRC.

Time for some medium thread nechromancy I guess.
I DL'ed and installed SpeedFan today, but there was an *interesting* anomaly in its function. See for yourself:
First I was like OMG WTF is that "Remote 2" sensor announcing a whopping 109 deg Celsius? Then I started thinking like "What computer hardware could possibly hold together in such stress?" and came to the conclusion that something is *wrong* with the method SpeedFan recognizes some sensors and the information they send.
I came to that conclusion because my computer has not yet in more than half a year of use been deformed into smoking heat of metal and plastics.
Anyone has any ideas what the **** could cause that anomalous behaviour? Other temperatures are kinda realistic, but that one... Has anyone else encountered the same phenomenon?
It's quite annoying, too, because now I can't use SpeedFan. If I start it and then quit the program, all the two fans on my PC turn to full speed, causing an infernal noise not quite different from turbojet engine in miniature scale. Which sucks.
-
No but its 11C right now and I'm freezing my ass off... :(
-
For what it's worth, speedfan is a great little piece of software.
-
Speedfan is good for changing the fan speeds manually, but its temperature and voltage readings are worthless.
These days I use Motherboard Monitor together with the MBM G15 addon. It finally puts the LCD on this keyboard to some use.
gah, this black on black crap is pissing me off. I can't wait for the forum theme to be restored.

Bastage. 11C is not that cold.

Tis for me. My semi-tan doesn't prevent me from the cold!
Especially at night, there is no sun to run to.
I'm solar powered see, doomed!

Whatever Remote2 is, it's utilizing the wrong sensor profile. If I install Speedfan for the first time on my system say after a reformat, ALL of my temperatures are blistering hot, but because each one of the temperatures is using the wrong sensor settings. Probe it with another program like Everest, or use the tool that's made by your motherboard mfgr, if they make one. IIRC, Everest will probe and tell you exactly what sensor chips are in your system, for example, Winbond, or special Asus monitoring chips. Be sure to select the correct profile for all temps, and you shouldn't see this ever again.
Edit:
I actually looked at my Speedfan profile, and apparently it autodetects all sensor chips it thinks it has seen. Only two of them get used, and the other four arent. There are two ovbious HDD sensors that are in use, but yeah. Find out what Remote2 is through Everest or whatever tool you prefer to use, and you'll be OK. Just uncheck anything that doesn't really belong, and is abnormally hot. Keep in mind that if it's over 100 c, that's past the boiling point, no possible way a component would be working at that temperature, unless it's possessed by something..
-
Oh, by the way: Finland seems to be about the warmest place in Europe currently. *sweats*
22 degrees Celsius in shadow. Only in Belarus it seems to be tad bet warmer. How's temperatures there? :p Interestingly enough, it seems that it's colder in North Africa than here... and it's just the beginning of May.
Who sayeth that the climate is not heating up?
-
Heh, was 25' degrees here Yesterday (but much cooler today).
Odd that this subject should be bumped just about now, since my new X1600 512DDR arrived in the post yesterday, and it hasn't crashed once since installation :D
