Title: When dreams become reality (render)
Post by: Sandwich on October 12, 2001, 10:02:00 pm
Well, I've used the Finger Nebula™ (//"http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/Forum13/HTML/001033.html") again, this time for the GVCa Amaunet.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) Render time was somewhere above 1 hour. Enjoy!

actually, the finger nebula popped up at WS a few months before that, so you can't TM it.

The same way I did...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) With a screen layer, just like an explosion.

Actually....    (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

Only the wireframe layer (yes, it was post production) was set to screen. That just made it look more like a glow than a physical frame.

To blend the two parts, I used layer masks with diagonal gradients, with the mask of the wireframe inversed from the mask of the ship, so the wireframe showed up exactly in those places where the ship was hidden.    (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

EDIT: To be honest, I've had the picture of the Finger (aka. Keyhole) Nebula on my HD since April 29th, 2000 - so I think that was before it got to WS....   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

I was just TM'ing the "Finger" moniker - not the picture. The picture is actually TM'ed by God. But let's not get into that again...   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

How do you render just the wireframe anyway? 3D Studio Max 4 renders the model with textures or the default material which is something like a greyish skin. I don't know where to tell it to render just the wireframe....

And does anybody know how to make a wireframe glow in Photoshop?

On the layer you want to add the glow to, double click to open "Blending Options", then click the box marked outer glow and then the tab the box is actually on to bring up the options. Play about and then click "ok".

Done  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Go into the material editor. Under "shader basic parameters" there's a box named "wire". Check it and then apply the material to the model. Then you have a nice wireframe.

If you want both wire and glow. Just make a copy of the model and scale it a little bigger. Apply wireframe and glow to it and get a nice pic. Voila!

whoch  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
better go in the video editor, first add a camera event, then a glow event and assign it to the map used by the model  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
that will look way better  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

That was what I ment. Use videopost for the glow.

I believe once you know all of Lightwave, it is superior to Max... however, Max is easier to learn(much). KillMeNow loves lightwave  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

bah they made other things with max. LW is in no way better, neither is Max. They're different. Anyway, anything that max can't do, you can add plugins to allow it. So...

Okay, here's the simple truth: Lightwave rocks! Okay, carry on  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

3DS Max is good for game modeling, UVs and lower-poly stuff. But when you REALLY want to make proper high-poly ship battles with volumetric explosions and stuff, I'd say Lightwave beats it.

3DS Max is easier to learn, but Lightwave is far more advanced. Wish I had Maya though  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

better volumetrics? Hell, max4 has a full page for volumetric lighting and one for volumetric fog! If that's not enough, dunno what you need. And about nurbs, there's a pop up menu for it, with all those green buttons, I can't even say what they're supposed to do. If max lacks in features, well, paintbrush is the ultiamte painting prog  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

BTW, which Lightwave do you have. I've got 6.5 and really can't make heads or tails of it  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Well, that went a bit OT...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

FYI, I used trueSpace5 to render the Amaunet, and Photoshop to add the blend and the subspace warp exit.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Photoshop beats both Lightwave and 3DSMAX silly!

Oh, wait a sec.... Photoshop is.... and Lightwave is.... Doh!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
