Title: Independence War II: Edge of Chaos
Post by: Spectre-7 on March 02, 2006, 07:13:59 pm
I was just rummaging through some boxes of games and I ran across a copy of Independence War II.  I had some really great memories of playing this game, so I figured I'd install it and see if it was as good as I remember.  Much to my surprise, it's actually just as good as I remember... maybe even a bit better.

I'm totally hooked again.  It's depressing as hell that this game didn't do better, because it basically put Particle Systems out of business.  I can only imagine what they would be doing now, 5 years later, with brand new technology...  Even now, Edge of Chaos is a beautiful game, though I suppose there hasn't been much competition being that the genre went belly up.

Anyway, enough reminiscing.  I was wondering if anyone around here has had any luck getting IW2 running under Linux.  I've got a serious hankering to play, but I hate rebooting into windows to play games.  It seemed to install alright under Wine, but it gave me a d3d error when trying to run.  I tried cedegacvs, but that was a nightmare.  I might consider picking up retail cedega if it runs IW2.

Moreso, PS had been working on a visual upgrade of some sort when they went down; I remember (when HLP had an I-War 2 forum) Stephen Robertson, one of the developers, obliquely mentioning a high res texture & planet upgrade pack.
