Title: Yet another n00b on board
Post by: Spectre-63 on March 04, 2006, 05:52:17 pm
Hi all...

I've been eyeing the SCP with curiousity for some time now but, up until Shivan put out his package, I was confused as to how to get started.  Now that I am, I've run into some unexpected issues that I'm hoping to get some help with:

1.)  Graphics:  I'm running an ATI X1800XL and things seem a bit dark...I've bumped up the Gamma settings in the game and it's helping but I don't recall having to do that when I first ran the game.  Is this a byproduct of the conversion to OpenGL?  Anyone have any recommendations for settings for the ATI cards (FSAA, Aniso, Triple Buffering, etc)

1a.)  I'm seeing what appears to be a dark blue square above the video when the intro video is playing...normal?

2.) Joystick settings: while it's been awhile since I've played FS2, I consider myself a pretty good stick and am having a helluva time getting adjusted to the joystick sensitivity in game...I'm fairly consistently either over pulling or under pulling lead to get on the targets.  I know I'm in trouble when I'm not slapping the Vasudans around in the beginning of the FS1 campaign...suggestions on deadzone settings?  Are there any available in the game?  I looked but couldn't find any.  Joystick in question is a Thrustmaster Cougar.

3.)  A suggestion rather than a question: I know a LOT of people who are interested in getting started again with the fine work done by the SCP - the biggest problem has been finding detailed, step-by-step install instructions to getting going.  Perhaps an install sticky would be of help here?

Thanks to all who've dedicated their time on this project...I did some beta-testing with community developers on Falcon 4.0's numerous patches and remember the time investment required.  Beers to all those who've donated their time 'n' talent...

Thx in advance for any help you can provide...

First off, Welcome to HLPBB! Someone will beam you shortly.

I'm also trying to unravel that as well. Just finished downloading it a few hours ago.

1: In the launcher, under the features tab put " -ambient_factor X" where X is a number between 0 and 100 (I use 75) play around with the number and come up with a setting you like.
     a. I've never had this problem, unless it's annoying it sounds pretty harmless.
2. Don't use a stick, sorry.
3. Check out the Wiki http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/ or karajorma's FAQ, I don't have a link but you can search.

Thanks for the welcome and the feedback, guys...

Mars -

I'd actually already gotten the instruction to use the -ambient_factor flag and it had been set for 75...I'll try bumping it up a little and give that a shot.

Out of curiousity, if you don't use a joystick how are you controlling your ship???

Press F2 in-game and you'll be able to configure your deadzone and joystick sensitivity settings.

I just learned how to play with a keyboard and it kind of stuck... it is kind of annoying because I have a PS/2 keyboard, so I can't yaw to the right, pitch up, and afterburn at the same time, but life goes on.

We really need a 'newb thread' which answers the basic questions n00bs are always asking. That, or a n00b-question thread so we don't have umpteen threads called 'n00b here', 'n00b need question answer', 'etc'.

Unless it's a n00bs and politik combination forum, it won't work. (And by "work" I mean be entertaining)

Might be a good Idea, it would contain them for a while (at least till they loose their n00b status)

Who do we railroad, er, Nominate to run that asylum? ;)

I propose a Joint moderation between Cobra and Ephili.  Either that, or we can bring Darth Hojape back and restrict him to that forum.

I've floated around this board for over a year now... I don't know if that counts for anything, but it should. Nah I take it back, give me my cake.

<snozzberries dude> please no... </sd>

Never knew there was cake, but then again the spiel changes with each initiation.

You know, they make these really great things called PS/2 to USB adapters for your keyobard and mouse and they let you yaw to the right, pitch up, AND afterburn!!!!

lol...

Or MAYBE, someone should take my freakin advice and stick the "I cant get my afterburner working!!!  Please HEEEEELPP!!!" so that we dont get spammed by it.....

While highly amusing, it also comes with the realization you're ultimately screwed. :p
