I just stumbled upon this nice long list of all kinds of free and open-source programs. Some of the stuff here everyone already knows about, like Blender and the GIMP, but there's also a bunch of useful stuff I've never seen before. So here's the link. Enjoy.

i've tried gimpshop, it's nice and all, but it doesn't have the amount of options that PS does have, particularly layer options, and layer settings.
