Title: Old bug discussion
Post by: bfobar on March 03, 2006, 03:21:04 am
totally cool!

1 thing so far: Game gets mad when I look at the gtd orion (galatea) in the tech room because

Error: Passed filename, 'capital01-05a-intrepid-shine', is too long to support an extension!!

Maximum length, minus the extension, is 27 characters.

Then it bombs to desktop with a buffer overrun.

Also occurs with intrepid, myrmadon, and soyakaze.

Lastly, the GTF pegasus shows up in my tech ship list and bombs the game out with Error: Can't open model file <>

edit: The GTF Pegasus is getting read in from my media_vps. Now I just need to figure out why.

edit2: Turned off media_vps and I get the FS_Port splash screen for loading, but no main halls.

I patched up from 2.3. Should I just can the whole port and start with a fresh 3.0?

It seems, that the game crashes after a few seconds I enter the mainhall. If I enter the briefing room, before the game crashes then the game plays just fine...

The only problem I've found is the mainhall crashing...

Other than that, Awesome job !

By the way, I made a fresh install of FSport + Updated sparky_hi_fs1 + updated missions
The rest of the files:

fsport_glow
fsport_hi-res
fsport_shine
sparky_hi_fs1
stu_fs1
tango_fs1
warble_fs1

It seems to be if you trigger either the options or techroom animations and let them run for more than an instant the game crashes.

The fs2 mainhall music plays too, don't know weather it's meant to or not but it just sounds plain freaky with the galatea backing sounds, lastly there don't appear to be any mission files but that could just be me missing something.

Edit: There don't seem to be any missions in the 3.0vp.  Am I missing something?

Seems Cockpitted Apollo is missing, had to install it separately.
Dark Knight, you were right about the "Options and "Techroom" the animations do indeed crash the game...

Also all mainhall anims are about 1 pixel left of their proper place in 1024 x 768 x 32 OGL

And when exiting i hit sometimes this windows popup, which doesnt seem to occur without FSport..

Filename too long: I'll look into fixing that.  For now, just don't view the models in the tech room.  They work fine in-game.

Tango_fs1.vp: I downloaded it just now and it worked fine.  Try again - maybe you have a corrupt download.

Options and Tech room animations: Try creating a new pilot upon startup and see if that still happens.

Main hall crashes (and everything else): Try running either retail or the latest CVS.

Tango_fs1.vp doesnt get properly read by my vpview but vpmage opens it nicely  :wtf:, only thing i can see different to other vpfiles that i quickly checked is that data folder name is written in CAPITAL letters.

And other the problems i marked have been encountered with latest (public) CVS 20060301 (with debug build) and do occur even if a new pilot is created prior entering to the mainhall.

Umm...question.
Are you supposed to get rid of fsport_music.vp and fs1_scp.vp?
I imagine you are, as they are incorporated into FSPort 3.
Does the patch util automatically delete them for you?

Which version of vpview are you using?  It opens fine for me, on both 98 and XP.  I'm running 1.3b29.

Mantis, with precise details as to where, when, and steps to reproduce.  Keep in mind I tested it extensively before release, and it runs fine on both retail and latest CVS on my computer with no other mods installed. :)

Umm...question.

No, the patch is a very primitive program that only updates the VP it's designed for.  And yes, you should delete those two VPs.  I'll make a note of that in the first post.

Damn, there are "jump to desktop" crash on some missions which the newer builds, like 2/24...
The Last Build that it work 100% well is the Goober 2/20.

The last few builds have had several CTD bugs in them.  Try any build from 3/1 or later.

VPView version is the same. .13build29, dunno why i wont read that file properly in my cpu (XP /w SP2).. IIRC it didnt even read it properly last time i downloaded the tango_fs1.vp (was about 6 months ago) back then i decided to get the tango vps separately (in which case vpview could read them). As for the other bugs i'll wait for the next cvs build before reporting...

So you can download a small update as opposed to the full new version.

Well tango_fs1 hasn't changed, so if you had a previous version that worked, you can just restore that one.  It's odd that it would suddenly get messed up, though - all I did it was copy it from FilePlanet to HLP.

All the vps are distributed in .zip , .rar , or .7z format, right?
Just run the "Test" option on them in WinZip, WinRAR, or 7-Zip.
For 7-zip, (freeware, no spyware, www.7-zip.org )that'd be:
(In Explorer) Right-click > 7-zip > Test archive
(In 7-zip) Move up/down the dir tree until you can select the file in the
explorer-like window.  Hit the "Test" button

Winzip and WinRAR are similar.

If the archive program doesn't report the file as corrupt or 'broken',
the problem is elsewhere.

Okay, I've uploaded new versions of 3.0 and the patch to correct the texture filename crash.  Unfortunately I can't upload a patch for the VP I posted previously, because my patching program ran out of memory. :sigh: So if you downloaded 3.0 already, either download it again or patch a copy of 2.3 using the new patch.

Well, whaddaya know! the Galatea mainhall! looks a little fuzzy, but that's to be expected from a 640x480 to a 1024x786 conversion. :)

There's a small problem with that, though, but i'm not sure it's mainhall-related. I brought my mouse over to the techroom and the game gave me a fatal error message. When I ran a debug I kept getting this:

Warning: Spelling error in table file.  Please change "inital" to "initial".

The "inital"/"initial" problem still exist in the 3/01/06 build.

Hey, sorry about the barrage of errors and mishaps with FSPort 3.0, but here are some more minor issues...

    1. Like Cobra's problem with the mouse, I cannot run my mouse over "options" or the game will crash straight to the desktop.
    2. I am getting the GTF Pegasus problem as stated earlier in this post. I ran the FSPort 2.3 with the 3.6.8 media vps, so I was just wondering what caused this error to show each time I click on the Pegasus in 3.0.
    3. After the Lucifer is destroyed, the ending video does not play, and when the game loads again, I get this error...

Error: Can't open model file <>
File:\fs2_open\code\model\modelread.cpp
Line: 1779
[This filename points to the location of a file on the computer that built this executable]

Call stack:
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------

   4. The starfield isn't present in the final missions of the game, starting when you have to escort the Bastion to the jump node. I think this was before FSPort 3.0 came out, however.
   5. Finally, the turretangle table either isn't in the vps or is not functioning, because I always see the turrets on the Bastion and on any other ship in the 90 degree position.

Thanks.

For build 2006/03/01, the debug wants it spelled properly as "initial", and it also doesn't want quotes around it, as has been previously the way.

Well Im close to finish (again) que Main fs1 campaing which port 3.0..
so far I discover 1 Bug, 1 minor bug, and 1 posible tweak...

the Bug:
----------
On the mission "Running the Gaunlet" The Zenith still there at 0%.

the "Minor" Bug:
---------------------
On the mission of escorting the 3 shield prototipes, the freighters go too fast... They reach the Node and jump before the Shivan send all waves and come the HOL...

The Posible tweak:
------------------------
On the mission of escorting the Plato, set Taurus Self destruction Hull check to 88%...

Remove all mediaVPs and third-party stuff for 2.3, and use either retail or latest CVS (March 1 or later).  Then see if you still have problems.

On the mission "Running the Gaunlet" The Zenith still there at 0%.

A SCP bug.  It's in Mantis.

Well is suposed that the Shivans destroy that cruicer fast, that is why their have self-destruct, but, the Shivans have problems in hit em... if I remember well, the self destruct is tigger at 79%? They take too much time to do this... One problem that I see, that those fighters dont use Hornets on the cruicer, that happend in the retail, and that is why their is killed which the correct speed. Because that those fighter maybe already use the Hornet on the Vasudan Fighters, There is two ways to fix this... set the self destruct to 87% or add an event to rearm those shivan fighters afer their destroy the Vasudan wing.

I did as you said and removed the VPs that you were talking about. The mouse cursor problem is gone now, but the other 4 problems still remain. In fact, the problems have flooded over to the Freespace 2 campaign... the flyable ships are limited now, weapons aren't automatically installed on your ship, and there are zero cannons to install, leaving me to use only missiles and rockets. I am pretty stuck right now

I too have trouble with the homescreen. it seems to crash after the animation now of the options desk and the techroom, luckely it doesnt crashs if i click on it quickly.  Also the campaign missions are now missing the starfeilds that us SCP users were enjoying from the patch before you updated to 3.0. Is there going to be a new patch that has this in the near future?

the mod.ini you can find them in the karjoma guide.

Well everything is fine until the last mission... When you reach the Node... CTD, but the mission is saved anyway, so you can continue to destroy the lucifer, when you destroy the Lucifer reactors, the mission finish and start to load a new one and this happend...

Error: Can't open model file <>

Then another CTD that dont allow to load that mission afer the destruction of the lucifer, but The ENDGAME.avi still not played? I dindt see then.

I created a own mod.ini and a image for port for SCP... a mod.ini is needed to link port to you mediavps, so I created one, which a little text in Goober first post, and I make an port image :D

Download http://galeon.com/shivansps/portmod.zip

Install:
---------
Just unzip, cut and paste the mod.ini and portv3.bmp to your port folder.

The mod.ini contains:
[launcher]
image255x112 = portv3.bmp;
infotext     = This is a brand spanking new version of the Freespace Port that has been rebuilt from the ground up to provide you with the best possible Freespace 1 experience. We've abandoned the attempt to keep the Port compatible with the main Freespace 2 campaign (considering the now-common use of the -mod feature and the fact that several ship stats changed between FS1 and FS2) and turned it into its own separate mod.  We've re-imported the original tables and missions from FS1 with the absolute minimum changes necessary to get them working in FS2.  It's just about as close as you can get to playing FS1 without actually playing FS1. ;

Good initiative, but the zip appears to be damaged. Tried redownloading 4 times so I doubt it's just bad luck. Anyways, you might want to set the website to http://fsport.hard-light.net/ instead of just linking to the main HLP site (which reminds me, some people need to update their signatures as well to reflect the move from 3dap ;)).

I am still getting the error with the Pegasus in the tech room after using the mod.ini. I don't think it has to do with the media vps... I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but the GTF Pegasus is at the very bottom of the tech room ship list, where the Shivan ships should be. It is completely out of place in terms of species, and clicking on it gives me that error that I posted earlier, the same error that ShivanSps and I get after destroying the Lucifer in the next mission loading screen.

EDIT: I managed to fix the FS2 campaign problems I posted earlier.

It's either the mediaVPs or some other mod you have installed, because the Pegasus isn't in the Port tables.

and by the way, is there any way to fix the pass-over-options-and-ctd error? :)

also, i played "Alexander Bell". It looked simply beautiful with hi-polyness (mostly). Some of the SEXPs were off, like Armageddon and Apocalypse not arriving until i destroyed the Trinity was destroyed, and the escape pod didn't show up. Plus there was no directives window. :)

I'll play the FS1 campaign for some bug testing.

Oh, and it appears that shine maps for all the orion variants (not the original) seem to be too long. :)

One question Goober, for what is that number of extra ships and weapons? is for the T-V War mod? I making a campaing of - + 15 Missions, in history beggings one week before the "first" Shivan attack and end 2 days afer :D, I thinking taht I could use some of them.. Like the Angels Fighters...

Let's see... FSPort is the only mod that I have installed, so like you said it's probably the 3.6.8 media vps. This problem did not occur with FSPort 2.3, however. I restarted the Freespace campaign to see if there were any other issues, and the ones that I spotted were...

    1. The new starfield is missing for all missions.
    2. The turretanglefix is missing.
    3. Nameplates are missing.

We were told to remove the SCP vp, but it seems as if that vp contained those files. I am assuming that they are in the main FSPort 3.0 vp as well, but something is just not working in this case. As for the Pegasus, I have no idea what could be causing an error each time I click on the ship in the tech room within the media vps. Any suggestions on what I should do?

I've never been able to reproduce that on my machine, so I can't tell you.  It works perfectly fine here.

That could be just the way the mission designer made it.

As I said on the previous page, I uploaded a version that fixed that.

That's why we added them - so you could make campaign with the Port that have some extra ships. :)

Only what I've been saying: remove every single third-party VP and enhancement, including 2.3.

Yeah, now it works perfectly. It seems to have corrected itself.

No, not exactly. In the original FS1 version, Apocalypse and Armageddon arrive to help destroy the GTD Trinity.

The wierd thing is, i have nothing but FSPort in the folder, but i see the GTF Pegasus. :wtf:

No, not exactly. In the original FS1 version, Apocalypse and Armageddon arrive to help destroy the GTD Trinity.

Post a new thread about it then.  It could be an incompatibility or a problem with the mission converter.

Then you have something besides the FSPort there - either a table or a mediaVP.

Nope. It's all FSPort. :p

Now, on the mission where you escort the Plato to Ribos (i can't remember the name for the life of me), I can finish the like normal, but when I jump out, the game CTD's with a fatal error.

Oh, and the Orions after the Galatea and Bastion variants are all low-poly. :wtf:

Didn't somebody experience the Pegasus popping up all Transcend-like before?

That has been done already, yet I am still seeing the same problems as before. I am also getting the Orion problem. If I were to push Shift+Ctrl+S in the tech room screen in the Main Freespace Campaign, the GTF Pegasus is still at the bottom. If I were to delete the 3.6.8. media vps that are in another folder for everything FS2, then the problem goes away, but then I get retail graphics of course. The way I have my folders set up is that I have a main Freespace 2 folder with subfolders of data, fsport, and mediavps. In fsport, I have all of the fs1 vps, I got rid of the original vps that you mentioned when you first released 3.0, I have the mod.ini file and the 10 .avi files, and I have a data folder that contains the high poly Ursa and Lucifer since they are not included in 3.0. Deleting any of these files does no help. As for the missing name plates, stars, and turret fixes...

I am sorry that I have repeated myself so much, it's just that I have done everything that you have already said. Maybe I am not understanding you? I only have 10 fs1 vps in my fsport folder, being fsport 3.0, the mission pack, the training mission pack, glow, hi-res, shine, sparky-hi, stu, warble, and tango... all fs1. Do any of these have to be removed? Thanks again.

Isn't the Pegasus entry created by the Media VP v3.6.8 Delta, in the file mv_core.vp in the tables folder, mv_tech-shp.tbm file, the first entry:

$Name:      GTF Pegasus
+Missile Banks: 1

See, it was made to fix the Pegasus, it wrongly has 2 Missile Banks before...it lacks the +nocreate Flag, so If it didn't exist, like in some MODs, it will be created with almost no data, not even the Model, which leads to a crash, 100% warranted. Anyways, it should be:

$Name:      GTF Pegasus
+nocreate
+Missile Banks: 1

I have already reported this before.........

Thanks, Shadow0000, that was exactly what the problem was. :)

Anyway, I've split off the old bug discussion and made a new post on the release thread.  Everyone please disregard the old posts. :)
