Apparently, the Red Spot actually disspaears from time to time as well. It's reckoned that one day it'll vanish entirely.

Wow, how did I miss this story!?  :o
I found this to be a very interesting development, as we're (planetary astronomers) are learning a lot about the workings of Jupiter's atmosphere because of this.  Very cool. :)

I can't wait to see what happens when Jupiter's differential rotation takes the great read spot and spot junior past eachother. judging from the white band, they possibly will touch. Will they merge and make the great red spot even bigger?

Judging from what happens when other storms get close to the Great Red Spot, I'd think that this storm would either get torn apart by the rapid flow around the spot, or possibly "bounce" off of it.
Then again, "Spot Jr." is now the largest and (apparently) the most powerful storm on Jupiter (besides the great spot), so there might be a chance that it will survive a collision with it.  I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. :)

SD Lucifer?

Close.

Spoiler:
I believe he refers to the star that Jupiter becomes in the Space Odyssey series.
