Title: Video Card help please!
Post by: Taristin on October 18, 2001, 09:12:00 pm
I figured if Thunder can ask, so can I...

My mother monkey video card worked fine for the first year I had this PC, The card is an nVidia Vanta lt.... It has direct 3d support in FS for 400x600 (that's the one, right?), 400x600 high res, and 1024x768, or whatever...

lately, I've been getting errors with no 3d acceleration. I'm running win2000, but that never stopped it before, and I upgraded to the newest direct x and video drivers from the site... still, siSoft Sandra shows me these screens (enlarged to see whole problem)

Please help me! I miss FS!!!!!

Strange...
Ok try the drivers found on Nvidias site ("http://www.nvidia.com"). They are usually newer than the boardmaker's.
If that doesn't work then try using an older driver (WHQL if possible).

Nvidia's 20k/XP driver page, right here ("http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=windows2000"), assuming the link works.
You can find older driver's here ("http://www.savagenews.com/drivers/nvidia/geforce-and-tntx.html")

Hope this helps.

I've read somewhere (Lancers reactor I think), that the last Nvidia drivers were really instable. it might be a good idea to try older ones.

The latest nVidia drivers work fine for my GF2 card...

I got this problem when I was running Win2k too, except with my M64. Exact same setup otherwise (drivers all installed, everything else okay). No DirectX - I had to run everything in software. Which means no FS2.

Sorry dude, I can't help you. Get XP.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

I'm using Detonator XP (non-WHQL) and i have only had troubles with Wolfenstein MP Test. Don't know about FS2, since it isn't installed right now (blasphemy, i know).
I'll install the WHQL drivers today though.

Well... lemme see where to begin:

Ryx: I did get the newest ones from that link already... no help.... I don't know where to find older ones...

Setekh: No way in hell am I gonna get XP... Not until I absolutely have to... FS2 did work with win2k for about 2 months, then it just stopped...

Thunder: Yeah, I figured monkey™ was better than the word with a '*' in place of the u...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

What would cause this? I have DX-8, the latest and greatest until 9 comes out in a month or 3...
And the video drivers are brand spanking new...

why dont you just get a new card?

you'll need to upgrade it to run the latest games pretty much anyway.

Just a thought

**edit**

Oh yea - sandra is the most biased unhelpful peice of s-hazam (sorry thunder  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) )benchmark program out there.  It seems to think my dual athon MP is half the speed of a single tualatin P3....dont trust it.

Well, with that money, maybe u'll buy a Geforce 3 in 2004  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) . Anyway, check out if windows 3d accelerations isn't out, motherboard bios is ok and try to update your card bios!

If youre still having problems, you could try using the 3rd party drivers from  Reactor Critical ("http://www.reactorcritical.com/")

Wow, I just went to the nVidia website and got a comparison. Here's what I got.
CPU: Intel Pentium III 449 MHz
Graphics Processor: NVIDIA RIVA TNT
Memory: 224 MB
My system compared to Geforce 3 Ti500
%100 vs. %661

I have no idea what neon's talking about (besides the 2004 part (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif) (how'd you know I wanted a GF3?)

And I'll try Thron's site... I hope it works

Your computer wouldn't happen to be a Comcrap Presario would it?

Compaq's are notoriously unstable and suffer from very poor compatibility problembs.

origionally from Compaq tech line:

Me:  "... So what video cards or accelerators work well with this system?"
Them:  "I get asked this alot, we don't really know.  Have you tried swapping different cards until you find one that works?"
Me:  "!!!... WHAT!!!  You mean that I have to keep buying cards (at $300 a shot) until I find one that will work with my machine!!!"
Them:  "well, yeah... [click]"

Are you using Win2k Professional, or Personal(is that what it's called?).  This OS was not built for games by any standards  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)  I'm surprised you didn't get a "Cannot install directx 8" error since NT doesn't support it.  If you have Win98, try using that.

Also, some games don't work in 2k at all, like Red Faction  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

Warpstar's right.  Win NT and 2k do not support DX at all (they have their own universal drivers, can't remember what they are called, but if I remember right they were crap anyway).

Get yourself a copy of 98 (or hell, even 95) and see if that does it.

I seem to be able to install DX8 on Win2k Server just fine. I don't see 2k Pro would be any different. And you should be able to play newer games on 2k aswell (XP is build on 2k after all). Older games however...

oh, and Raa Tor'h have you installed Service Pack 2?

No, It's not a Compaq... It's a custom rig... But my dad had some guy put it together (They screwed him, cause he doesn't know PC's)

It's Win 2k Professional... But again, I played FS2 with it not 2 months ago...

And yea, Sandwich gave me the link to SP2 a while back and I got it... Which is another thing, Sandwich can game on Win2k.... So it's not the OS AFAIK

And I already have DX8, I downloaded it like 2 nights ago to overwrite the version I already had... Still didn't help...  I don't know what more to do...
