Title: car got broken into :(
Post by: Stealth on March 16, 2006, 02:34:44 am
Parked at 24 hour fitness. at 11:50 my buddy leaves the gym, and later says he saw someone in a tahoe parked facing my car, with the guy leaning against the grill of his car, smoking a cigarette, looking at my car, on the phone. half an hour later (12:20 AM) i leave the gym, i open the door, and see my whole console's gone, with all the wires hanging out. i looked around to see how someone would get into the car, and the back right small window is broken, glass all over the place. I walk back to the gym to ask them to call the police, and there's a black guy walking out cussing on his cellphone. i asked him "did they break into your car too?" he's like yeah they did. so i go to look at his car... they ripped that car apart. he had two screens, a head unit, playstation, a ton of DVDs and CDs, subwoofers, speakers, and they took it all. they didn't break his window though, they busted his lock. so the cops come, and write everything up, but they said there's not much they can do now unless the serial number of any of the equipment shows up at a pawn shop or something.

Good thing I didn't drive the cadillac to 24hr fitness last night... or they would've had a loooooot more stuff to steal. Then again, the cadillac's got a good alarm at least.

still pisses me off though.

now i wish they'd broken one of the bigger windows.  damn.

not me. for more than one reason, including the fact that i only have liability insurance (i.e. no matter what they stole, i don't get a cent), plus even if i did... there'd probably be like a $500 deductible, and with damages to the window, and the head unit, it won't be half of that.  PLUS i wouldn't do it anyway, cause it would be a warning against the car.
three reasons why it's no insurance fraud on my part.

now the other guy?  i dunno... he had a good $2k worth of equipment in his car. hehe.

Bloody hell. That really sucks. I truly hope the thieves make a mistake and get caught.

This is why I'm learning Electronics.

Sufficed to say, I intend to buy a car and booby-trap the **** out of it. Like if you push a big red button on the radio the whole unit sets on fire and a tazer bolted inside the casing turns on so you get knocked-the-****-out if you touch it trying to get it out of the car.

Yup. Thieves do suck.

My uncles electronic store got trashed just days after last christmas. They backed up their car troguht the glass wall, it was that thick safety glass, so they really came in hard. Then they threw about half a dozen TVs, couple of PS2 and DVD players and some assorted stuff in to their car. My uncle got the alarm on his mobile, and he was there like in 5 minutes (police arrived about the same time), but the bastards were long gone. I think the worst thing wast the mess the shop was in. Half of the place was covered in glass and tons of stuff were lying on the floor. And the thieving bastards had walked all over them. They broke more than they stole.
Fortunatley he was insured, so he got some of the money back. This happens allmost at a yearly basis to him. The store has been robbed about 12-15 times I think. So he's pretty much proficent when it comes to battling the insurance company.
Only once the thieves have been caught. But I think they were little over their head back then. They had like three cars they were trying to fill up. Creedy bastards got caught red handed :p

i like the anti-theft device on james bond's lotus in "the spy who loved me" break a window, and it takes everything out around it with 50-100 yards  :p

I might get some broken screens too. Open 'em up, put some light explosives behind the actual screen bit, hook it up to the power supply lines then fit them into the head-rests.

So if anyone took them and ever hooked them up to a power-source they'd get a face full of glass.

Great minds think alike... although in Britain we're not allowed to defend our property because that might hurt the poor criminal.

Speaking of car booby traps, can't you put anti-theft flamethrowers on you car in South Africa? I seem to remember hearing something like that...

Doesn't look like the sorta car that would attract too much light-fingered attention (that isn't a dig).

redsniper: yeah, in South Africa you can do pretty much whatever you like to defend your car.

I understand the arguments against using lethal force to defend property, but frankly, if there was a little more selective pressure against crime maybe the crime rate would go down? If there were immediate, painful consequences to nicking a car, it wouldn't happen as often.

Wrong.

We're not allowed to torture the criminal; there have been 11 prosecutions of this in the last 15 years, and they tend to be of the ilk of the guy (real example) who lay in wait to set a trap for a burglar at his premises, knocked him out, threw him in a pit and set him on fire.* (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4224473.stm)

really as far as pawn shops are concerned, smart theives tend to remove the serial numbers, and the pawn shop will take any item regaurdless. probibly use the model number on the fingerprinted police ticket instead (which is totally useless). some pawnshops that have the moral grounds to not take expensive items without a serial number, but theese are so fe and far between theyd just take it to another shop. a dumb thief on the other hand will go straight from the crime scene right to the pawn shop. the item will look as if its been freshly ripped out of the dash. knife cut wires and all. most of the time their stealing it renders it non-functional and wouldnt even be taken by the dumbest pawn shop. but when it works its funny to tell them to fingerprint the police ticket and they try like mad to screw it up. of course when they leave the pawnshop 90% of the time they see their dealer next. the sad thing is they do this maybe once or twice a day, every day, usually spending all his earnings on crack, living homeless and forgetting to feed themself in the process. so i wouldnt try to kill em, theyre doing their best already :D

If you ever see the crooks, tell them I said that they are stupid. Then kick them for me. Or beat them with a crowbar. Either one is fine.

Cyanide Gas Dispensers plus automatic windows would be effective, too. steal the car, windows go up, car fills with gas for about 10-20 minutes, then is fully ventilated, rendering car safe for owner, save for the removal of corpse, and it would leave your car almondy fresh!  :p

This is what that TV show Swag should have been like. None of that spraying foam or playing a tape telling everyone that the car is being stolen ****! I got really annoyed with that show. The people who were caught out should have been facing prison time not getting an interview on camera to say "Yeah. Stealling's bad. I won't be doing it again (snigger)"

Damn, that sucks man :( I hope they catch them.

But in South Africa it is legal to use lethal force when protecting your property. There was even a Darwin award when a man with a gun broke into a car, sat down, and tried to hotwire/start it, shoving his pistol into the front of his pants. Except the owner had rigged up a device so as when that happens, an airbag just above the driver seat would deply - and it did just that. It hit the crook in the head, causing him to pull the trigger on his gun - which was still in his pants - thus earning him a Darwin Award by castration. You could do something like that; generally, you wouldn't have to worry about homicide charges or anything.

I'M MOVING TO SOUTH AFRICA!!!!!!

Why, because it has 8 times the US level of carjackings, 60 murders per year due to it, and has got so bad that it's de-riguer in some areas to run red lights?
