Title: Gorgeous or butt ugly?
Post by: IPAndrews on March 17, 2006, 10:14:04 am
Okay. Since the forum is quiet. It's time for some hot poll action!.

Here is a fantastic low poly version of the Thirdspace cruiser.

Obviously this is a great piece of 3D art by IE_Maverick but what do you think of the actual design of the ship itself. As envisaged by the folks who made the original B5 Thirdspace movie? Do you like the design or hate it? Time to ask the big questions that really matter. Gorgeous? Or butt-ugly!

i said neither, cause it is not as ugly as some legend of the rangers ships or some really butt ugly aow centauri designs, but it also isnt a beauty like the whitestar or the sharlin :)
it is a special design with some interesting ideas and a hell to model (i can tell you that :) ), but not a beauty

Very good model, you people catched the movie model very good.

As for its overall design itself, it always looked like a flying scepter (like a +3 cudgel or something) to me, and we can only speculate of it's possibilities.  Excpect for blowing up, there we no ship be shown in action in the movie (at least not the german variant I know) :( Actually I think those floating things around a glowing globe are rather strange and seem to serve no logical technical function IMO

Actually I think those floating things around a glowing globe serve no logical technical function

They are to direct the power of the glowy ball forwards into the weapons. They also serve as crew quarters. You have to be careful to get into the right floaty chunk when you board the ship though. There's no bridge to the other chunks so if you get in the wrong one and find yourself without sleeping quarters, you're in the corridor for the rest of the trip.

Well, maybe this ball is also some sort of "enhancer" (spelling?) for their mental powers, since Lytha said in her vorlon-memory that they are all strong telepaths. Actually, it would have been interesting if this species would have been handled a little deeper in the story, now it's all just mysterious :)

You know my answer ;)

Although I'm a tad biased, because I find the whole "Thirdspace" movie to be utter pish.

I actually sort of like it, although mostly because it's pretty unique. I thought that big 'ball' was simply the power-core of their ships. Shadow & Vorlon ships didn't need this because they drained power straight from hyperspace, as I understand it. And seeing the size of that ball, and considering the heavy shielding on the smaller ships which didn't even have one, I suppose the big ones were close to invincible. Although the Vorlons did manage to push them back.

B5 features so many nice ships that it has much competition, though. Beyond a doubt, the Vorlon & Shadow ships are the coolest, I think. I'm not so big a fan of the EA ships myself, they're way too 'terran' and predictable, typically humans. I like better the exotic ships.

The idea of the Thirdspace movie was good, I think, but the execution was rather poor. The existence of 'Thirdspace', the Vorlon story, etc., was cool. Everyone starting to fight, the Lyta thing, the nuclear bomb, etc., was all rather stupid.

I really like the way you have modelled it.. Looks very good and even gorgeous.. But the basic model in the movie was butt-ugly... so i vote both ;)

I think its a bit of both, I thouught the movie was quite good and entertaining.  It shows that the Vorlons have tried many things in their huge lifetime, and it would probably be right to assume that in their arrogance they would try and contruct something like a jumpgate.  The thirdspace aliens come form another galaxy so you would expect them to be very different.
Great work on the model mav :) But shouldnt the colour should be a little greyer instead of purpler ?  :)

Not another Galaxy (distance measurement), but another level of reality itself (another Dimension like the MIrror universe Federation ect..)

It would've been nice to see Evil Kosh with a beard huh? :P

Anyway I think the model is nice, but we really don't have much to go on for the background on them 3rd spacers...
(So I voted niether)

I'm sure if we had more info we could appreciate the whole concept better. Maybe a 3rd space "tech handbook" would be cool.

Is Maverick making the 3rd space fighter also? I had pondered trying to port some higher poly LWO models over in the past...

I think the model is amazingly well done, didn't think a 'low-poly' (how many is it?) would be able to capture it. However, the design and third space film are turdish.

Same goes for B5 season 5 which Im just finding out now. Can't say I thought the show was ever excellent but season 3 and 4 were worth watching at the least. Sheridan has the worst dye job in history.

Sorry for deviating from the thread there.

While the design itself is anything but beautiful, IMO the texturing makes up for it somehow. I really enjoy looking at the ship. And Maverick's interpretation of it is simply stunning.
