I was thinking, without having to deal with powering thrusters, and atmospheric-entry shielding, I think that Beams could be more heavily-powered. What do you guys think?

don't think so: in a fighter, when you redirect all the energy to weapons, they're not more powerful, you just have power that comes faster
-
So maybe the same type of beam could be maintained for a very long length of time?

I would also tend to agree with that to a certain extent, but maybe with more power available, power hungry setup's unsuitable for other use could be used.
-
The Big C shunted additional power to her guns, and made them more powerful. You just can't do that in a fighter because Freespace wasn't made that way for fighter guns.
Therefore, you can make more powerful beams. Also, having more power directed to weapons means that you could just power a bigger gun.

Ahh but do you think they could have multi-shot abilities like in the render I made? Having multiple beams coming out of one charge?

If it had multiple emitters in the one gun, sure...

The clouds need a little work, but overall it's very good (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Looks real pretty, but you should light those Manticores so they fit in with their environment (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Look at the Manticores, and then look at the mountains behind them - the atmosphere in between us and the land makes the land appear bluer. We don't even get a hint of that blueness with the Manticores, which would indicate that the Manticores are very very close to the camera/viewpoint - which they're not, because they're too small (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
