Title: Censorship, EA, and BFME2
Post by: Grug on March 19, 2006, 09:28:38 pm
WTF, is all I can say.

Recently had a look at the custom hero feature in BFME2, and of course my first hero was to be a white cloaked wizard who I'd name Jesus. As any logical person would like to see Jesus walk the ground converting the masses to your cause or destroying them with wizard blast level 3.

To my surprise and disgust, upon completion of my character creation, the name had reverted to "*****". Surely not, I thought to myself. So I tried, Christ, God, Mohammad, Muslim, Satan, and they all were censored. Mormon, and Messiah however were allowed. I'm yet to try Jew, or other religeons yet, but holy ****, this is ridiculous.

**** you EA, I want my Jesus hero and wizard blast level 3!

I stuck with messiah for now. He runs around going "bow before me!".

Still wtf do EA think they are, politically correct crusaders or something. =/

Jesus and Mohammed (various spellings) are perfectly legitimate names.

Figures.

My friend plays Counterstrike using the handle 'The . Jesus'. Obviously because nobody ****s with the Jesus.

He's never had a single person tell him it was inappropriate or offensive.

EA should clean up their own business practices before they go criticizing other people for being vulgar

Oddly enough I know several Muslims called Mohammed.

It's not odd at all - it's one of the most common names among Muslims. Right up there with Ibrahim.

Sorry, keep forgetting that's one of our language's strange little habits, sometimes it means 'This is odd' usually it means 'This isn't odd at all' ;)

Edit : It's actually subtler than that, kind of like a Policeman asking you 'Didn't you see the lamp-post before your car hit it?'....
'Oddly enough....No' :/

EA can **** off and die.

Incidentally, have any of you ever played that billiards game over MSN? The in-game chat in that has a ludicrous level of censorship. Even words like "Nazi" are censored.
And the obvious ones like towelhead.

It's actually the most-chosen name in the world, IIRC.

At least make it a damned option. =/
