Yup, TES4 is out.
I'm running at pretty much just a few options above medium, but it still looks nice:

Sweet. What rig do you have, Ace? I should be getting my copy tomorrow or Thursday...
-
*cries* I want it! Want it now! :(
-
Awesome. I'll probably get it in a couple of months... as much I'd like to get it when it comes out here (tomorrow), I just don't have the time for it at the moment.
-

you and me both, but first, xbox 360 :D

Maybe it's just the settings you have up, but to me it doesn't look THAT much more impressive than Morrowind, visually.
-
0,o
It's quite a bit more impressive then Morrowind to my eyes, although the character doesn't look vastly improved, the textures are much nicer. And that water...*drools*
-
Graphics are pretty, but is it a good game?

The characters doesn't look much improved..?
Just about every character in that game looks like they and their faces had a close encounter with a truck at high speed. =\
Ofcourse.. that is before you apply the mods made by the community. Those are invaluable, they truly give the game such a facelift.
Edit: If it's not apparent, I'm talking about Morrowind, not Oblivion :p
-
Err my FFXI settings on full look better than that.
But Ace you have an older video card right? Game probably looks way better than that.
-
Graphics are pretty, but is it a good game?
I'd guess at yes, all the reviews I've seen say its great. Plus I'm fairly faithfull in these guys to make each new game greeater than the last. I wish I hads it now. :(
-
I'm running this on a P4 2.5ghz with a Radeon 9800 pro.
As I said before, the graphics are set at medium. (the distance slider I set a bit further since it can handle it, but self and regular shadowing has been turned off)
At full detail it's _much_ better looking but my computer starts to explode.
Morrowind with the right plug-ins does look as good as Oblivion on low detail settings. (Morrowind doesn't have the shader/bump mapping support though)
In a few months I'll get a nice new PCI-E video card, and then I'll be whining that not enough graphics upgrade plugins are out yet :p
As for whether or not it's a good game:
It takes the best parts of Morrowind and Daggerfall and slams them together in a particle accelerator.
I still haven't quite figured out either the lockpicking or persuasion "minigames" though. Probably the sort of thing that's incredibly obvious to everyone else but I totally miss it.
-
Yeah, the 9800's old stuff. I'll take some later with my X550 unless someone with something better beats me to it.
-
Show enchanted weapons if you have the time. I hope they've taken off that weird look they had in Morrowind.
-
Just did, the slight green glow on the Blades dai-katana is from the spell effect I enchanted it with using a sigil stone.
It's a very slight shader effect to add a little glow to the edges.
-
Here's how it looks on an X550 (note the card isn't supported by the game, the game considers it outdated - so imagine what your systems that are up to speed will display)
I play it in 800x600/1024x768, it really is demanding, and I don't want to sacrifice much quality for speed. Note however, these are NOT on high quality, I'll leave that to the people with computers that can run it smoothly.
Took a widescreen one just for the hell of it though.

Christ. I'm going to need a whole new box for this.
-
Get it. Now.
It fixes everything Morrowind messed up; and everything Morrowind did well, Oblivion does better.
I seriously think it'll be a year before I play anything else.
-
Damn, you people are tempting me to reach into funds that don't exist :(
*Goes to play gothic 2 instead.....
-
my x850xt is gonna love this. ;)
-
I've just been to Oblivion.
I'll put it like this.
Doom 3 is pussy compared to the size and magnitude and awesome of the place. That graphic stuff doesn't end with leaves and trees. **** the game's awesome. And I don't even like the genre.
-
I played my first two hours of Oblivion today on my brother's rig. I love it. A pity that you can't walk across the border to Valenwood, though. That made my Wood Elf sad. But really, the game is enormous. I daresay it's going to have even more replay value than Morrowind, and I find myself finding even more new crap in that game, still.
I would advise getting it, if you can play it, either on the 360 or on a badass computer.
-
Does it actually fix the things morrowind messed up?
No more alchemizing yourself into instant godhood, or the other million or so little absurdities that make morrowind so abusable?
No more walking wikipedias in place of NPC interaction?
Combat that feels alive?
A plot that's developed primarily through interaction, not books?
-
Yes phatosealpha, it fixes all of those things.
The plot is developed by both action *and* books though. You can get away without reading any of them, but they do add to the depth of it all.
*grumbles* They said the horse armor and holiday plugins would be out on release day and they're still not here :p
-
God I want this now. =/
Maybe I can sell something in the pawn shop so I can pick it up...
-
What does any of this have to do with the Cthulhu mythos? I'm confused.
-
What does any of this have to do with the Cthulhu mythos? I'm confused.
Um. Nothing, I think. Where'd you get that idea? Now I'm curious.
-
The thread title probably. Dagon is a short story by Lovecraft, similar to the later and longer Call of Cthulhu
-
Yes that's about it it seems. I openned this thread looking forward to some comments on Dark Corners of the Earth or something and was most disappointed to find screenshots of generic D&D rip-off RPG no. 2,500,000.

For some it may be like that hehe.
-
What does any of this have to do with the Cthulhu mythos? I'm confused.
Daedra Lord Mehrunes Dagon, which admittedly many of the Daedra were intially shameless rips from Lovecraft (but have since been fleshed out further), Hermaeus-Mora has that nice Lovecraftian bloby mass thing going on too.
But then there's Sheogorath with his pimp cane.
-

Heh. At first I was rather indignant, but you do have a point. The game's world, Tamriel, was originally created by the developers as a setting for their D&D games.
However, it's progressed light-years beyond what it once was. Give Morrowind a go; I guarantee you'll love it.
-
Nah, forget Morrowind just pick up Oblivion ;)
I'd suggest Daggerfall, but it's buggy as hell despite being utterly awesome.
-
10/10 from Eurogamer
9.6/10 from Gamespot
That should be enough evidence to prove Oblivion is a killer-app for the 360 and a must-buy for the PC.
"Ultimately, which version you choose should depend on whether you have a high-powered PC and whether you have an Xbox 360 hooked up to a home theater. If you don't have the former, the Xbox 360 version is a relatively safer bet, and it gains a perk over its PC counterpart by offering some compelling unlockable achievements, enticing you both to finish the main quest and to earn your keep in all the different guilds in the game. It packs a more-expensive retail price, though.
What's overwhelming about Oblivion is how good it is and how much there is to it. Literally almost everything that's ever been done well before in past role-playing games is in here--done at least as well, if not better. From the quality of the story and character interaction to the pure thrill of the combat to all the pleasure to be found in the game's little details--the lock-picking minigame, the alchemy system, the way arrows stay stuck in their victims, the ability to eventually create your own spells, the informative full-color manual, all the different books you can stop to read in the game--these things combine to make Oblivion one of the single best, longest-lasting gaming experiences to be had in a long time. It's just too bad there's no multiplayer.
Just kidding. "
-
That should be enough evidence to prove Oblivion is a killer-app for the 360
No, no it isn't. A game becomes a killer app not simply by getting good ratings on review sites that may or may not be bias, but by being crowned the 'must-have' game for the system by a majority of people that play the system. Essentially, it'll become the killer app when it reaches the stage of; 'if you own a '360 but not this game, you don't deserve the '360', y'know, along the lines of Ocarina for N64 and soforth.
-
Check the reader reviews. If you don't own Oblivion, what the hell are you doing with your 360 (other than playing GRAW)?
-

That was precisely the reason that I suggested Morrowind =P I love Daggerfall, but... ick. Plus not everyone can run Oblivion, but pretty much everyone can run Morrowind by now.
-

planning on getting the PC version just for the sheer versatility of it.
-
I must also mention that the Dark Brotherhood kicks way more ass than the Morag Tong (ironic, I hated the brotherhood in tribunal). The Morag Tong writs in Morrowind were just like "walk into bar, kill this guy, walk into a shop, kill this guy, etc.", whereas the Dark Brotherhood contracts are stuff like "stab guy with special poisoned knife to fake his death, flee to avoid being jalied for murder, sneak back into town, sneak into morgue underneath chapel, give antidote to wake him back up, sneak him out of town."
Plus the guy who gives you your assignments is a vampire.
-
A killer app kind of has to be unique (at least initially at release) for the system, anyways. Morrowind would seem to be an excellent game, but it's not exclusive; the definition of a killer-app for a gaming system has always been that you need to buy that system for it - Halo for the Xbox 1, Mario on any Nintendo console, GTA for the PS2, etc.

Selling it on ebay?
:nervous:

Hahahahaha
-
Not you again.
And as long as it's console exclusive it can be considered a killer-app for most casual gamers who don't have a tip-top PC.
-
Roger that, killer-app...
And I thought I could play it on Celeron 600Mhz
But seriously, I'm wondering whether someone will make patches reducing the minimal specs of this nice game :)

GTA is on the Xbox and PC as well as the PS2... WtH?
Tut tut. Not reading the post fully, I see.
A killer app kind of has to be unique (at least initially at release)
(actually, I don't know why that 'kind' is there. Essentially, a killer app is something that is, for some point in time, the justification for buying said thing, i.e. the 'unique selling point'; something that's released simulataneously across 2 or more formats is not a USP, even if one format is the PC. Plus, there is an additional arguement that it has to mesh with the consoles image and thus be inexorably linked, something which means generic games or genre games like Pro Evo, even whilst being utterly superb, aren't considered killer-apps even if they are both good and exclusive)
-
Fine, have it your way.
It's a bloody fantastic game.

The Morag Tong was an interesting concept, but implimented poorly. This Dark Brotherhood is even more fun than the Daggerfall "kill this noble in this house and sneak or run from the guards" which admittedly was barely scripted and mostly due to your imagination due to the Doom style graphics/tech/etc.

Not you again.

exclusive denotes that it's only for the 360, i saw oblivion when i got my xb360 (and contrary to popular belief, it didn't explode, embedding shards of console in my face), i saw oblivion there, for the 360, and i didn't get it, why?.. 'cuz i'm fairly confident that my PC will run it reasonably, it's not top of the line quad SLI'd speed demon or whatnot, but if it can run FEAR with all the bells and whistles on (sans AntiAliasing) with no real issues, then oblivion should run alright on my PC.
-
Yeah, probably. Plus, the mods are where its at :D.

Yeah, probably. Plus, the mods are where its at :D.
Oh, yeah, except that 99/100 of the mods for Morrowind were complete ****. I can name two that I consider good: Siege of Firemoth(and that was an official mod, too) and Better Bodies.

better bodies, better heads, a few tex replacement mods.. the mog mod :nervous:
-
I missed the better bodies mod...
I have Morrowind on PC and Xbox (both game of the year editions -ie all expansion packs for those who don't follow it) and I actually preferred it on Xbox. Before I get hung by the "not normal" committee, this was before I had my own computer that could run it well to speak of. So it was great just being able to sit back and play morrowind to my heart's content smoothly and without hassel (minus the odd crash or freeze up, damn annoying =S ).
Maybe I should reinstall it on here and play it with high graphics while I wait for $ to get oblivion. :)
First I'm going to get a gig stick of RAM though, 512mb just doesn't cut it. :(
That or play WoW. :D
-
Been playing the game for four days now and absolutely love it. Few things like the levelled items/monsters are a bit annoying but the modding community is already working on fixing those. Anyway, less talk and more screenies of the gorgeous graphics!
Ah, a beautiful sunrise. Nice start for a day in the wilderness.
Typical. I hate overcast. Oh well, nature still looks bright and... uhm, green.
Found myself in a creepy dungeon.
The imperial city looks like it's very close, but it will take me a long while to walk (run) from where I'm standing.
It started raining, so I had to find a shelter. An ancient haunted elven ruin would do just fine.
The said ruin from inside, after I had cleaned up the place from annoying ghosts. I was so dissapointed not to find the Deathbringer +5 from that raised platform. Levelled items and lack of unique equipment sucks.
Ah, outside again and off to another adventure.
-
1) You need to shelter from rain?
2) Levelled items?
-
1) You need to shelter from rain?
2) Levelled items?
1) No... but you just have to poke your nose into every single dungeon you come across.
2) Idiotic system that the devs put in place to balance things out. In essence, the enemies and items are always (more or less) the same level with you. At level 1 you simply won't find a mithril shield anywhere in the world, but at level 20+ every single roadside bandit has full ebony armour. Kinda takes away the fun of exploring, as everything is always about as difficult as it was way back at level 1. I've yet to find a dungeon that's impossible to my mage.
-
Which makes leveling redundant because you can rule the world at level 1 (well not really).
Though for those of us who don't want to level, this is great.
-
i am still yet to find a copy of the PC version anywhere on the shelves in devonport, a POX on harvey norman!
--slightly off topic---
(they're a retail chain in australia, the devonport store is aparrently known for its lack of customer service and fleecing of customers..... and their improper training techniques for new employees, which is, the acid test "Here's your seat, there's your work, good luck with understanding what you have to do, the staff know Sweet bugger all about what you have to do, and i'm usually out of the office for extended periods of time". that sorta thing)
---/off topic--
-
Well leveling still makes you more powerful as you gain the various skill perks. (a must for spellcaster classes)
I don't mind it so much as it's like Daggerfall was. Admittedly a mix of this system and Morrowind's would be best. (all encounters having level caps, so bandits stay in the 1-10 range, and large dungeons stay levelled with you)
Most of the unique items in the game though are independent of the levelling mechanic, but they're still tough as hell to get. (though a lot of the Daedric quests require a certain level to get them started)
-
I'm very sure that Morrowind had levelled items. It did in dungeon chests and stuff anyway.
As for Oblivion, I've also been playing it for the past couple of days.
It kicks total ass.. Great game, shame about the Duplo-like interface, but a couple of mods help with it.
I recommend it to anyone that can run it....
-
Well, I decided to take a risk on the recommendations here, and went out and bought it.
I don't hate it. They didn't fix everything that bugged me about morrowind, but they fixed enough to make it palatable.
The way stat gains are determined at level up is still stupid. It makes your minor skills far more important to your stat growth then major ones, and I can't help but feel that it's ass backwards. Especially combined with the monsters-level-up-too mechanic, which means the quantity of levels you get isn't nearly as important as the quality of levels.
That said, it's fun. Combat is certainly much more vibrant then morrowind. Non-important characters still don't have a real dialogue interface, but at least you're not regualarly confronted by a list of every single topic in the universe when talking to a beggar who'll know nothing about anything. Important characters do have real dialogue, which is nice.
-
I'm very sure that Morrowind had levelled items. It did in dungeon chests and stuff anyway.
Yes it did. But you could also get glass armour at level 1 if you were a lucky bastard.
In Morrowind it was way too easy to become the ultimate killing machine. The devs clearly didn't want that to happen in Oblivion, but they went too far with the balancing.
-
That does sound a bit dissapointing. But it still sounds like a fun game none-the-less.
I guess in the end, its one more thing for them to learn from in the end when they go about making their next game. :)
-
Don't get me wrong, it's still a great game. Well worth the money. There just are a few things they changed from Morrowind that I don't like.
-
Could I ask what type of system setup your playing it on? :)
-
A64 X2 3800+
2gb ram
7800GT
I run Oblivion at 1024, HDR and all sliders maxed. Some shadows are off, as they cause odd bugs. I also tweaked the grass a bit by editing the ini file. Runs quite well outdoors and just perfectly when inside houses and dungeons.
-
Damn, that's some rig.
I'm definitly going to get more ram before I get it though. 512 just won't be enough to run smoothly I think.
-
Well, I've been playing it for 4 days straight now - may be time to give it a break so I don't finish it too soon! The only thing I don't like about it is how certain monsters and other characters seem to love their power attacks so much that you get staggered for like five seconds then die without even being able to fight back. But then I did go for light armor and skimped on block, so maybe that's my own fault. :p
Oh, if anyone's using an ATI X?00 series card and want a quick FPS tweak, turn off all the water options. Even when there's no water around for miles, having just one of the options on seems to knock off 5-10 FPS on my system.
-
(http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comics/20060327.jpg)
I think that happened to everyone.
-
Hehehe, yeah just read that comic. :p
Stuning hey?
-
Yeah, I prefer when I have AI archers on my side since they don't get in the way. I haven't had them running away onto another target when the AI attacks me though, I just have to be careful to stop lobbing fireballs and lightening when I have people in melee. (didn't have a problem with the Kvatch castle quest though, but the Bruma guards sometimes got in the way and the Knights of the Thorn were... a thorn in my side)
Of course the arrows staying in people is fun (even in Thief they vanished if it was a direct hit, odd that no one has really made any WoW jokes about the arrows sticking on people there...) especially when I got an arrow up my butt when hitting the bandit camp next to the exit from the starting dungeon. (I think Karl Rove shot it...)
-
The dark brotherhood quests are really quite fun. Lots of very cool rewards there, and it some missions that really do feel appropriately evil.
The guard AI though, man....I don't like that. I got into legal trouble. Paid my fine. Got released, to find that the guard at the door was still hostile. So I yielded, and he stopped attacking me. But the bastard kept attacking my horse! Ended up needing to kill him.
Guards are relentless - the front gate guard of a town will chase you to the other side of the continent, and never ever give up. And they're telepathic too - if you kill that guard after he chases you to pango pango, even if nobody is around for miles, every other guard in the world will instantly know about your murder. They're goddamned borgs.
And while I don't like the monsters level up thing all that much, it wouldn't bother me all that much if it weren't for the fact that a ****ing bear is ALWAYS more dangerous then even the arena champion. That's just stupid.
-
I'm pretty sure if you kill with one hit, the other guards are not alerted.
-
http://www.panogames.com/
Check out the Oblivion stuff in 3d.
The site is pure awesome.
-
Yeah, if someone yells and there's no guard in hearing range one is generated and then enters the area.
A plugin has been made already that turns this off, so NPCs will be more likely to flee to get a guard. (already happens sometimes though, but usually they just yell for one)
-
In Morrowind it was way too easy to become the ultimate killing machine. The devs clearly didn't want that to happen in Oblivion, but they went too far with the balancing.
Maybe, but nobody told me how. I played the game as best I'm able, and yeah, after much struggle I'm at Level 36 and can kill pretty much anything that isn't godlike with one or two whacks from Trueflame or Hopesfire. Even so, mages and people with real nice ranged weapons still scare me. The thing in Morrowind that made it deceptively simple was the ease of dodging hostile spell effects and projectiles. Forget to do so or get cocky, though, and prepare to be bend over and kiss your ass goodbye. Even at Level 36 and sporting The Uber Gear of Doom +11462.
-
Hehehe, I had everypiece of my deadric armour custom enchanted to give me max bonuses on most of my important stats. (Strength of 400 iirc - which I may not, long time I've played) Friend of mine maxed out at level 86 or something when it becomes impossible to level up anymore or something.
I'm surprised at those ****ing goblins in Trubunal under the city, even at level 46 they can harm you very muchly. :(
I love being a munchkin, especially when its earned. Makes me feel all tingly inside. It's just too much fun when you make that save point and go alter ego and slaughter literally everyone in Morrowind, hence making it a ghost island filled with empty towns etc. >D ^.^
-
All you had to do in Morrowind was enchant something that gave you constant healing...
And boom, item of invincibility.

I went over my download limit this month and thus connection speed was shaped down to dial up. My god did those 3 images take forever to load. ><
They pretty though. :D
How does the horses thing work btw?
Can you run around stealing people's rides and stuff?
Do you need a skill to ride?
etc.?
-
You press space near a horse IIRC. Directional buttons are for viewing, WSAD for controlling.
-
Horses can be stolen, infact your character sheet has a "number of horses stolen" thing :p
-
Can you brush their hair and deck them out with horse shoes of speed? :D
Horses are cool. ^.^

Wow... this game rocks. Got it yesterday, didn't have time to play it. Had today off. It's now nearly 2am and I've got no idea where my day went... aside from a few breaks to check email and browse various forums, I've been playing constantly. It has been a long time since a game managed to capture me so, Civ4 kinda got close once during a particularly close game, but still not quite.
I've been pleasently surprised by how well it runs given the quality of the visuals. Having seen the screenshots on this thread, I had expected it to get a bit choppy even on a high end system when outside, but it runs smooth as silk in 1280*1024 with every slider maxed (no AA though).
My only complaint is that the interface is a little bit cumbersome, I would like some hotkeys to directly access inventory, map, journal etc, instead of having to go through several mouse clicks to get to them. But still, it gets the job done, and it is a minor nitpick only. During actual adventuring, I just don't notice the interface, which is as it should be.
Gonna go get some food now, or this game might actually kill me through starvation. I just realized I haven't eaten since 9am this morning.
-
What system you running it on Shade, if you don't mind my asking?
-
An X2 4600+, 7800GTX and 2GB ram. Yes, I had actually expected that to have at least some problems with the outside scenery at 1280*1024 if I ran at max settings, but luckily I was wrong :)
As mentioned though, I don't have any AA turned on, so that probably helps a good bit, but I am still surprised that it can cope with 250+ trees with moving leaves, lots of grass waving in the wind, spell and weather effects, reflections from water, specular lighting on most objects, and I don't know what else, at the same time.
At a lower resolution sure, but I thought 1280*1024 would be pushing it too far... only reason I even decided to try it intially was because it's the native resolution for my monitor. Bethesda seem have done a pretty good job at optimization, as some significantly less pretty games (like KOTOR2, for instance) can show a noticable drop in frame rate from time to time.
On a side note, it's now 3:45am and I just played another hour... I really, seriously, ought to go to bed.

I know :p If it's any comfort, I struggled with a P4 1.8ghz with a geforce 3 until about two months ago. I kinda figured after nearly 4 years without upgrading anything, I could afford myself a treat. And it's not to be a fanboy or anything, but the X2 seems to me an insanely good processor, I can definitely recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade. It runs at 29c idle and has maxed out for me at 40c at a 90% load... with stock cooling. My old P4 runs hotter than that...
-
Gah!
That thing must of cost a fortune!
I didn't even know they existed! ><
I'm running a P43Ghz, Radeon 9600Pro, 512mb ram. (hence the wish to pick up a gig stick of ram very soon)

=o Boats!

The one time I got on a boat so far I got attacked by 3 sailors. Presumably cause they'd just scrubbed the deck and there I was with my dirty boots dragging filth all over it. Being level 2 at the time, the result wasn't pretty :p
I took some screenshots of my first adventure outside the Imperial City, but they're a bit large for posting here, sooo... how do I do thumbnails instead of full sized images? I can't seem to find it in the SMF code reference, just resizing which isn't quite what I want (gotta be able to click them and see the full glory of Oblivion :)).

Outside the city itself:

I wondered if those mountains behind it could be climbed, so I decided to try. On the way up, I ran into some deer which naturally turned tail and ran when I got close:
The ascent took a while, so it was quite dark when I neared the top. but visibility was pretty decent still by the light of the stars and the moon:
I finally made it to the top of one of the mountains, and could take a look down at Chorrol where I started:
I waited until dawn, and then headed down again, running into this view on the way:
About two minutes after that, I acidentally ran over a steep cliff and went for a base jump.... sadly I had left my parachute in my other pair of pants, and ended up a red stain 50 metres down. So that's how my first real adventure went :)
-
Bloody 'ell, that is an impressive view.

Damn. Very nice indeed. =o
Fnice. :D
So is Sean Bean's voice sexy ingame? I bet its sexy. ;)
-
Dunno, haven't met his character yet, only done one quest in the main story line and I think it'll be a while before I get any further. Patrick Stewart did a nice job on the intro and tutorial dungeon though. Actually, all of the voice acting I've experienced so far has been top notch.
Having too much fun just running around doing, well, stuff... exploring, mountainclimbing, scavenging loot from bandit caves without alerting them (I went for a sneaky type) and I don't know what. Thing is, I can spend several hours just walking around doing random non-important stuff and not get bored with it, because it's just so well done.
And incredibly, having spent probably nearly 24 hours in the game by now, I'm only level 4. 4. After that long in Morrowind I was like level 20. It just doesn't feel rushed, and because of the difficulty in most places being determined by level, there's no need to level just to travel around safely either. Whereas in Morrowind, just travelling around could at times be suicide if you weren't of a sufficient level.
But that goes with the general trend I guess, as this game is plain and simply better than Morrowind on pretty much every level.

To be honest, I found Oblivion to be dull and boring, nearly as much as Morrowind. I hope Neverwinter Nights 2 will be a lot better, especially since I love Baldur's Gate series and Neverwinter Nights. NwN's original campaign was a bit dull but the two expansions were great. If only Mass Effect would come for PC... But at least Dragon Age will. Oh well, maybe I'm just a BioWare fanboy, even if their games sequels are developed by other than BioWare. :p

mind you, that's open-ended nonlinearity(elder scrolls, etc) vs semiopen-ended linearity (Kotor, NWN, Jade empire), they're two classicly different styles of RPG. some appeal to others moreso than most, etc. Oblivion's fun, it's a huge, deep world, with a color all its own, some games don't have that kind of effect that make you sit back and think "wow, that's a heck of a view"

True... I enjoy Oblivion very, very much :D

Apparently, you can now download a new set of horse armour on xbox live for (the 360 version of) it.
£1.70
Welcome to the future.

How come they can allow someone to download a new set of Horse-armour directy to their system, but they can't make my feet smell good?
Future, indeed!

That is... disturbing.
It would seem the same is for the PC version: http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_plugins.htm
The plugins for Oblivion links to another site which doesn't seem to be working for me atm.
This is kinda stupid. Though For the PC version, I wonder how long it is before someone just freely distributes it to all.

it seems rather wrong to charge for an offical modification, i already paid money for the game, there's no way in hell i'm gonna buy anything that they've missed due to the rush to get it out on the shelves.

It could be a lot worse. I mean, what if they charged the user for patches. Hell, imagine if EA did that... :shaking:

The future is a scary place. =/
If any major software app ever charges for patches... I don't know what will happen, but I very much doubt it will be good...
-
Well, I for one would be sueing for not providing goods that were fit for the purpose in the first place. :)
-
Indeed. But in some cases I think its already happening.
Look at Fable, and Fable: Lost Chapters.
How can they re-release a game with only a handfull of extra content?
That is just beyond belief to me, as well as the fact that anyone would re-buy the game for the extra content. We are all becoming mindless drones, our only cause being to generate revenue for the corporations. =/
-

I feel obliged to point out that this sort of stuff used to be free, too. Hell both Trackmania and GalCiv2 both have had patches added with new content (the latter less so, as it's newer, but TM had a huge addition that amounted to a free expansion pack).

The thing about Lost Chapters was that it was the PC port. And it had more than just a handful of extra content, didn't it have a third extra content or something like that? The point wasn't to get people who already owned it to buy it again, the idea was to get people who hadn't bought it to take a second look.
While I do partly agree with your point, I don't think that's a fair example.
-

Well even Oblivion's predecessor Morrowind had free official plugins released on their website. Something with their publisher must of went awry somewhere. =/

It's because Live gives them the perfect system to fleece sell their plugins (or perhaps stuff dropped to save disk space or expedite beta testing), so why not carry that onto the PC. I suppose it would be quite interesting if Live facilitated the users being able to make and freely/commerically distribute their wares, but this is basically a nice big scam.

Damn straight.
It's just dissapointing that it's affecting the PC industry as well, mods are the main reason I go PC. If it all goes like this I'm screwed. :(
I guess I can only hope Nintendo stays true to the players, and not just the customers.

I guess I can only hope Nintendo stays true to the players, and not just the customers.
I would hope so, although it does seem inevitable you'll have to pay to DL the old emulated classics on the Rev; hopefully we'll see a lot of them given away as bonuses to go with other games, special offers, etc. Certainly I wouldn't be too willing to pay £5 (or indeed less) for games I already owned or could rebuy for cheaper, regardless of how classic they are.
-

From what i've read, there will be a small price for downloading emulated games, although the price should be negligable, by which I mean about the same price as this Oblivion plugin. I've also seen a bit regarding credit for purchasing games, so it might be cool if - when you buy a Rev game - you get a little bit of credit to spend on emulated games...

I think so. I'm pretty sure one of the first things mentioned (by Nintendo) was that whilst 3rd parties would have control on exactly how you'd get their games, Nintendo wanted to use a sort of bonus scheme where emulated games would be bundled (by way of the aformentioned credit system) with Rev games; like buy Mario 128 and you'd get credit usable to DL Mario 64 or somesuch.
-
It's a softer way of approaching it I guess. Reward schemes and other means.
Better than MS's this is what we have! To be cool you should have it! Buy! Buy! Buy!
-
Well, I would expect Bittorrent or the like to quickly defeat any attempt to get people to pay through the nose for minor plugins. They might as well make then available for free and at least get the goodwill out of it.
-

I dunno; I suspect they'd use some way - perhaps via serial nos or the Cd protection - to link these types of downloadables to the buyer. Albeit that'd be something that is overridden for pirated copies (rather obviously, as they could remove that protection), which is really adding to an increasing arguement that the consumer is better off stealing than buying when it comes to software.
-
Only when developers pull stupid tricks. If they play fair, so will most potential customers. If they pull stuff like Starforce, people will rebel and get a cracked version instead. I thoughroughly believe game developers eventually make more money from games that just let you do with them what you want.
-
The official excuse is since MS forces people to pay for Live 'content' downloads, they had to charge PC users to be 'fair' :doubt:
You are grossly misinformed.
I find it stupifying that people think this is because of Live. That's completely wrong. The publisher can distribute content both for a premium and free. Either way, it's their choice. For example, PGR3 will soon have a new car booster pack up on Live for free.
-
Albeit don't they already charge the user by dint of the subscription fee (for certain sectors), and also through ancillary stuff like charging to change your usertag & the corresponding 'points' purchase system, so MS can absorb a lot of charges through indirect means. Like, Bethseda could get £1 for that dl, and MS 70p (as a fee for providing the service access, etc), which could effectively finance free packs anyways. Unfortunately it's nigh on impossible to quickly find out if said license fees for the service exist or not through any sort of trivial google search.
-
The point is that it was the devs choice to charge for the content.
-
The point is that it was the devs choice to charge for the content.
But do the devs have to pay to sell that content. Because in that context, it becomes more understandable if still a very **** thing. MS published games are obviously going to have no charges to access their 'own' content delivery network, but do the 3rd party publishers have a charge to contend with?
-
Not that I'm aware of.
Besides, if that were true, why charge for the PC content?
-
the problem is of course the balance between price and amount of content.
2$ for some measily horse armour doesn't look like much but it adds up after a number of official mods. 10 to 13 of those mods at such a price and you have the cost of an expansion pack (which would really contain much more content). So either these mods provide plenty of new content (and not stuff that should ahve been included from day 1) or either the people buying them are played for suckers.
-
The horse armor mod, IMO is a ripoff. However if the mods follow the pattern of the Orrey and Tower mods which offer voiced-overed quests, areas, and items they are worth it. (as 10-12 of those added together becomes an expansion set)
-
Besides, if that were true, why charge for the PC content?
Maybe I'm going crazy, but...circular logic?
-
Not that I'm aware of.
Besides, if that were true, why charge for the PC content?
a) because they can
b) because they do for the 360 version.
Considering b).... the xbox360 version costs anywhere from £10 to £25 more than the PC version. Granted, the 360 will run without needing a PC upgrade, but it does need a £300 console, and graphics alone aren't enough for justifying buying one of those..... anyways, they probably will make more per-sale from the more expensive 360 game, and the last thing they want is to give the cheaper version an advantage over the other.
Especially as they would probably have planned a fair number of these add ons; even if only about 6 or so were planned (which'd be less than the amount of free stuff for the prequel, IIRC), that's about a tenner on top of the regular game price, and if it were free on the PC...well, it'd be a saving of another £10 (NB: awareness of official plugins wouldn't entail awareness of the modding scene, which could be a factor you'd consider as a Pc but perhaps not 'generic platform' style gamer). And if, like me, you didn't care all that much about graphics, then it'd be a bit of an easy decision to make.
-
large scale content, i wouldn't mind paying for, but for a mod, that for all intensive purposes, is purely asthetic in reasoning, seems wrong. and given the problems i have seen some have with it (on the elder scrolls forums) it doesn't seem worth it.

Still, way to ****en expensive to get a 360. I can't believe a controller costs $80 and then you need to buy the cord for it as well at another $40? wtf.

I ended up with the 360 version after screwing around for hours trying to eek out anything more than 25 fps. Got annoyed and saif **** it, my time is way more valuable than that. I am so done with INI and driver tweaks.
damn pretty game either way.

Yeah I was intending to.
But I liked the idea of playing GRAW and the like too. But no way am I paying that much for all that crap. It's ridiculous. Hence, Nintendo is my preference most likely, in the console arena anywho.

(to be fair, I think that's about US$5, which isn't as bad value as the horse armour)

The editor works...nice....
Now I only need to find out how to extract item models and icons, since apparently, I can't make new items without having those... Since the item editor asks for those two things by opening a browse window I can't simply use the ones from other items.... ugh...

I'm not sure if this will help much but...

Final Verdict:
The bad: Leveling Scheme and leveled equipment and leveled enemies suck. Attack magic is lacking in variety, and has graphical effects severly lacking. Horses border on useless.
The good: Mods can fix everything about the level approach, from the need to mathematically plan out levels to get max bonus to the screw over if you do quests too soon. Dark Brotherhood quests especially, but actually most quests, are well done. Melee combat is lively, and stealth is very well done.
The ugly: The interface. I really, really, REALLY hope the upcoming patch is doing something to de x-boxify the PC interface, and add in functions like the hold down shift to sell all at once and avoid annoying confirm messages, spell book spell deletion, more hotkeys, a way to bind the mousewheel to change through hotkeyed equipment, a way to bind keys directly to a page of the main menu screens instead of having to go quest screen->map all the time.

As for binding keys for stuff like the map(if I am interpreting your post correctly), I believe the function keys are already bound for that. And I seriously doubt that the patch is going to deconsole-ify the menu. But we can always hope.
Can you point me to a good de-levelization mod, by any chance?

The function keys don't take you to exactly the map, for instance - they'll open one of the 4 main sections of the GUI, but not a particular subsection. I'd really like a 'just show me the minimap, or the overworld map' key. And while I'm not expecting too much, I really, really hope they at the least implement shift-click and ctrl-click functionality in the inventory and barter screens. Constant confirmations just annoy me.
As for delevelization, I'm not at my own PC, so I don't have the exact names. Which exact part do you want though? If it's just spreading out the leveled mosters and equipment, I belive the one I use is "No obsolete equipment", which really just makes it so lower class weapons/monsters still show up. It was enough for me.
If you want the one that changes the way you level, I'll have to look when I get home.

http://www.tessource.net/ if there is one, chances are, it's there, alternatively, play with the difficulty slider if you're getting your ass handed to you all the time as the enemies level like you do.
