Title: Rendering question to the steak
Post by: Taristin on October 20, 2001, 09:43:00 am
How ya' doin' AWACs?
Ah's got a simple question. How do you get those thruster glows like you have in your renders? I'm using TS5, and the lights won't show a glow behind an object, and I've tried using planes, with transparency and filtering like with beams, but it's not always successful...  Any suggestions?

Speaking of renders..
anyone know of a good rendering tutorial for Lightwave or TS?
I'd like to start doing some HW renders...

I thought Setekh used Spear, not Ts?

Thats "Spire".

And he uses little lens flares for all his glows, just don't ask me how he got it to look so good. I can't seem to replicate it.

I tried lensflares... Damn (we can say that right?) his spire! TS won't show lensflares if they are behind the object... and these plane concoctions of mine don't allways work right...

Ha ha...

This is why you go abandonware, not modern freeware.

Well, yes I have Spire and yes I use lots of little lens flares - but in particular, I think I have the answer to your question about engine glows behind ships. I set Spire to render lens flares for me so that glows persist even when they are behind other objects. So basically, the engine generates new flares based on what non-transparent objects are above it  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

TS is evil.... it took me half an hour to add 4 visible lights on a render.  If the light intersects in any way with the model, it doesn't show... if you get the wrong settings on the light itself - doesn't work.  And all the lens flares seem to be set to look the same size when rendering, regardless of the actual light size, making it near impossible to add running lights and thrusters at the same time  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/mad.gif)

TS4 does 90% as much as TS5 when it comes to rendering, and it is alot less complicated.

No no, none of that's necessary  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) But what you can do is take a look at these...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
