Infinity: The Quest for Earth (http://fl-tw.com/)
A small, independant project seeking to create a completely open-ended space MMO where there are little to no restrictions, not to mention that it's likely going to be completely free. See, unlike other games, the entire Galaxy is open, meaning that - thanks to procedural techniques - there will be billions of planets revolving around millions of stars, each and every one explorable to the point of landing on them and driving around in smaller vehicals, and each unique. This is going to be rather entertaining... :D

That sounds like it could be fun up to a point... but what else can you do in this open-ended universe? If it ends at being able to drive around a lot of barren rocky planets then it might get old quite quickly despite the scope...
-
:eek2:
I've been waiting for something like this for a quite long time. I just hope it'll become ready some day in less than 5 years.
Heh... wonder if they're gonna includesome civilization development on it. Like, players choose a race and start developing it together from, say, 21th century Earth-level? Then it'd take some time (not too long) before players start encountering new races and so on. Would be kinda cool to participate in a first contact, even if it was virtual.
Then there would be, like, Human-Minbari war or equivalent, if the other side had managed to develop a bit further...
Oh my, this does offer very much, providing that they do manage to finish the project. Hope they also get the gameplay right besides good looks...
-
Sounds like an EvE rip. :p
I love the saying
Of course your unique, just like everyone else.
Sounds interesting though.
-

From what i've read, there's actually a lot you can do. Aside from the Universe being quite story-driven, you can build something resembling an empire, building stations, starship factories, and eventually control entire fleets. I for one look forward to the possibility of building a base inside a Nebula and swallowing any ship that enters it. Kadeshi FTW. :drevil:
-
Yes... yes I went on to read the website and the overall plan seems quite masterful. I hope they get it right though. X3 had promise of some massive empire building and such but the gameplay execution left a hell of a lot to be desired.
Also, a lot of the shots they have of planets look a lot like Terragen work. Nothing wrong with that - but there's only so many "oooh look, purdey sun setting behind a mountain" shots I can take before I start to want something more.
That said - benefit of the doubt time - we'll see when it has a demo out or something.
-
sounds like EVE online.
EVE-online runs on my PC...this one looks like it wont
I'll stick with EVE for now.
-
But unlike Eve-Online...
Combats will be purely real-time, action based, much like in a flight simulator or a first-person shooter. You will be in full control of your ship.
This was the main reason I didn't like Eve. I just couldn't get into the detached way you controlled your ship. (I realise Eve isn't that kind of game, though.)
-
But that's there because it's a vital counter-measure to fight the evil lag!
As little as the lag may be, the one thing I've found in EVE-online's system is that it's consistant. I get the same amount of lag with my cable connection in Singapore, as I do with my DSL-at-dialup-speeds connections in India :)
Playing it in FPS format is gonna cause significant amount of strain on the network code for such a thing :(
-
Lag or not, it doesn't really change the fact I found it to be quite an effective cure for insomnia.
Eve's strength is the politics and trading. That's fine, it's just not my thing. Infinity seems to be a little more story driven, and for me that alone makes it a far more interesting proposition than almost every other MMO on the market at the moment.
Anyway, saying this game is ripping off Eve doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Eve inhereted most of its core gameplay from other sandbox space games as well, it's really the community that sets it apart.
-
Give me a gun and I'll make it fun.
-
EVE is also story driven, to an extent. Corps that play out the story RPG style are fairly common. In any case, its just that the thing's description is so suspiciously...well, similar to EVE-online's system right now, and it is just as open ended, sans going on the planet bit (which they actually intend to do soon, along with a major graphics update). Over there, I remember someone once mentioned that travelling between planets at non-FTL speeds would take exactly how much time it'd take as covering the same distances would in reality. It's just that big, and it's running on one server cluster.
However, before you take it the wrong way, I'm not bashing this at all. I'm just saying it's similar - and the fact taht it's possibly going to be free looks like it's going to be good. The planet landing and the FPS bit is utter coolness, not to mention if it's moddable, imagine the machinima possibilities ;7
But if its going to come at hte cost of horrible, horrible lag, it sorta takes out the fun of it all :(
-
I've been following this for..oh, say, half a year. I actually think I followed a link from here some time ago. It looks totally awesome, and I'm really disappointed that I missed the combat alpha, on account of being busy last weekend. Did anyone here get to play it?
-
By the way, just think of the amount of easter eggs they could put into this game. Like...
...finding a Halo on some distant system...
...or better still, a Knossos Device...
..that leads into a dense nebula infested with... well, you could guess...
...or an 8th passenger infiltrating your ship at some deserted piece of rock...
...or the Katana fleet of Dreadnoughts...
...or quite much anything.
Galaxy is a big big place to hide stuff into. ;)
-
That sounds like it could be fun up to a point... but what else can you do in this open-ended universe? If it ends at being able to drive around a lot of barren rocky planets then it might get old quite quickly despite the scope...
Empty space is good. Especially if they let you build/buy stuff like prefab buildings, bases and modules.
You could fly out, find some nice, backwater moon with no-one on it, then build yourself a nice tank-factory on the ground and some fleetyards in high orbit. And because the galaxy is so huge, people would have to use ACTUAL espionage and bribery to find the place.
-
Y'know I did think of that. But given the apparent scale of the universe I can't help but feel that the actual exploration of the systems could be somwhat dull. One terragened style planet looks much the same as another y'know? Oh you have difference in size, perhaps some gas giants and so on - but sooner or later you realise there's nothing really novel.
That is of course untill the game takes off and becomes popular. Then as you say - people can actually sell starcharts to help people navigate territory - heck you can make one yourself or decide to do some science-mission type stuff where you basically document all the systems in a certain area then sell the information on. Or you could fly as far as you can in a certain direction and set up shop far away from the eyes and ears of everyone else... secretly building up a stupidly large fleet of ships before going out on pirate style raiding missions or basic genocide if the desire took you.
-
If the entire galaxy is available that means that you could buy a ship, head out to the fringe of space and never be seen again even if you play for the next 10 years :D

Now imagine that, but with tractor-snagged n00bs.
You could drag their ship out beyond what their nav computer considers 'known space' (possibly cripple their hyper-drive with a few well-placed shots) and use them as slave-labour for mining operations.
-
They'd be pretty sad individuals if they kept playing though :D
-
You could just tell them that if they mined X amount of stuff they'd be given a new hyper-drive and set free.
Then when they reach that amount you could either pod them and drag them back to a home system or just pod them and drag them into a Sun.
-
God damn I need a new computer.
-
I hate to burst the bubble but who is with me in guessing that it'll probably die before it's released?
-
Quiet, you.
Certainly looks promising.
-
They say it will be released on windows XP in two years time. In two years time, XP may very well be extinct. :p
-
Not so fast. What we've seen of M$ business practices regarding Vista so far indicates XP might be very much alive in two years time.
-
The same was said about XP before its release though.
Time will tell, that's for sure.
-
I was still using Win98 until last year, so I'll still be using XP until about 2050. :P
-
Looks like they're going to be running a stress test for the video and server capabilities this weekend. Should be interesting to see how that turns out.
-
I'm a very avid member on this site, and right now I'm coming to you all, with a request. Infinity is coming along very nicely at the moment, the engine is great, the stress test is...going to happen soon we hope, and as far as publicity goes, we seem to have a lot of attention, or at least a lot of members on the forum.
The problem we've run into now, is that we don't have enough people with modelling and texturing skills to help make ships to use in Infinity. Because of the nature of the game, Infinity will need a very large variety of ships, and while we have plenty of concepts, we don't have nearly enough models, and even fewer textured models.
When the game is released, Flavien (the creator) will likely release a free version, and a premium version. The premium will, needless to say, include many options and items that the free version will not. Flavien has stated that people who contribute to the creation of the game a certain amount, will most likely get the premium version for free.
Please, we really need the help, and many of you guys would be excellent at giving that help to us. Those interested should visit the site, as well as the forums. If you want to know where most of the ships are, to take a look, please go to the Contributions Section (http://www.fl-tw.com/InfinityForums/viewforum.php?f=9) of the forum.
Thanks in advance.
-
if there is a posibility of getting a (small) percentage of any money you guys make with this, I'll join as a full time artist, I need cash, and I can make models, textures, and apply said textures to said models.
-
BTW you'd probly have better luck here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,8.0.html)
-
Won't the mods get mad if I re-post a thread?
Also, I'm not sure how much money is really involved, you'd have to ask Flavien about it.
-
nobody will get mad, honestly, you should have made a new topic to begin with, rather than posting in this one.
anyway, if I can call this a 'job' and have the potental of getting paid, I can justify spending a lot more time on it, though I might make something just for the hell of it if I had some idea what the styles of stuf you wanted.
-
Changed the name of the thread to better suit the new direction it's going in.
-
By the way, just think of the amount of easter eggs they could put into this game. Like...
...finding a Halo on some distant system...
Probably would look something like this:

huh. Im no 3d modeller, but if you want concept art, feel free to use any of the ship designs I've made to date. Seeing em come alive would do wonders, actually. :p
If required, I can provide rudimentary .dxf files, but as these are made in DoGA CGA, the polycounts are absolutely unrefined, meaning that it may just be better to start from scratch and use any .dxf model as a reference :(

Not all Indie projects die before release.
Good luck ;)
-
Ok, as to the possibility of money for efforts, this comes straight from the FAQ:
I'm a developper. Can i help you ?
If you are a talented 3D artist with a lot of free time, and ready to work for free (or for a small fee), please contact me. I'm not looking for additional programmers though.
Also, Singh, the creator of Infinity really liked some of your designs, he wants to know if he can use them in the game.
-
It might be an idea to offer payment in the form of things you get free, but which have value to other people.
In-game assets, for example.
People might be more inclined to help and to pimp the game across the net if they knew they were going to get some collosal behemoth of a ship and a nice little moon near the core planets, armed to the ****ing teeth with the best weapons access to the server can buy.
A nice, unique, in-game status would probably help to. Like letting them affix a 'title of infamy' to their nick. So they'd be Baron Whatever, Inquisitor Smith or Jimmy 'Butcher Of Bakersfield' Jones.
People are more likely to support these ventures if they think at the end of it they're going to be able to lord it up over all the newbs and boast about how they remember the good ol' days of Beta, before balancing made Warlocks unplayable....
-
Well I'm not sure I want to join, I've got too little free time to work on a free project (but paid, hehe...:drevil:). I am a conceptual artist/3D modeler, so if you have an interest in me, take a look:

Just to make myself clear, I'm not offering money, because I'm not the creator. You would want to go to the Infinity forum and ask Flavien about being paid for your work, instead of asking me. I'll put in a word with him about this, and see what he says, but I think you'll get better results if you contact him yourself.
-
I have already done so, right after I posted I copy/pasted into an email sent to the contact address on the website :)

Ok, official word from Flavien is that he is willing to hire a modeller, but he has a few conditions, namely that:
- he has to be particularly talented, and able to do texturing too
- the payment will of course not be equal to what a real company would propose.
- less creativity, and deadlines could be involved.
Anyone interested should post here, along with some of their best work, I'm going to sort through and look for the better ones to try and save Flavien some time.
-
I'll change the thread title again to better suit the nature of the offer :)
-
Kewlio :) Well if he's interested, go ahead and contact me. I'd also be willing to donate a couple models that I've made if you want, because your project is so damn cool :D
-
This would presumably be requiring the use of wholly legit copies of modelling & art programs, of course.
-
the bombers in the forground are mine, I did both model and texture (as well as UV space)
here is a much clearer shot of it
(http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/intel/tech_vanir.jpg)
here is another released pic from BWO, it's an older (uglier) model, I dislike the geometry, I had to make a lot os sacrifices when I made it, and now there comeing back to bite me, I intend to remodel this eventualy, but the textures are fairly good.
the big blue ships here I made, it's from a few years ago though, and they never used the texture sceme I wanted (meaning they are a bit more blury than I would have liked, even for the hardware of the day) it's not my design obviusly (it's from babylon 5 if somehow you don't recognise it)
I'm finding it hard to find images of my 100% pure work, as most of it went into BWO, and is thus clasified.
here are a few HTL jobs (remodeled ships, only fighters had new textures) I've done over the last few years. if you've played FS you should recognise most of these.

(note the lighting from the glow points I did by hand in the ilumination map)
not the best picture of it, but my remodeled orion
(http://img8.exs.cx/img8/8629/htl_hres_orion.jpg)
ah, here's a better one (note textureing is either WIP or altered by one or more other persons)
I tried finding a pic that showed off my changes better, but I couldn't, this is a HTL model of the GTD Golgothat, I want to make clear that the origonal design was made by Dark, but I heavaly modifyed it afterwards (as BWO development has continued through about 7 generations of graphics hardware) unfortunately you can't realy make out the changes I made to it, but that is my beam weapon graphics
(http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/htl_goth03.jpg)
oh, found one, this shows my changes better
(http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/htl_goth02.jpg)
also note, I can program, I'm the guy, who origonaly developed the renderer that FSO uses.

Honestly, I don't think anyone is counting. Officially, yes, legal copies are the way to go, in reality, I'm not sure how many of the people currently helping with models actually paid for their programs.
Meanwhile, the style of Infinity is going to be mostly industrial human, as there are no aliens. We currently have a large list (http://www.fl-tw.com/InfinityForums/viewtopic.php?t=866) of official concepts that we would like modelled. If I may suggest, some of you may be more likely to get the job (or jobs, if we need more than one person), if you show us your interpretation of one of the concepts on that list (try not to use the WIP concepts). It is up to you how much work you put into it, whether you decide to just create a simple model, or go all out and texture the model as well. We will still look at other work, and it will still weigh heavily on our decision, but as you can understand, we'd like to chose someone capable of meeting all our expectations, and the best way to do that is by seeing an interpretation of some of our concepts.

Modesty ain't your thing, eh Bob?
hmmm... no
will there be any restrictions on distribution of WIP/final material?
(ie do you care if we post publicly progress in the form of imagaes and/or model files)
would you mind if these were also ported to work in FSO and used by anyone who wanted them? (restrictions applying such as anyone who uses them must mention that they were primaraly developed for your game, and includeing links to your game)
I may very well take on a few models, if I get anywere I'll clame one.

Here's Flavien's own words when it comes to copyright of models:
Copyrights and right of use:
Any work that you do, as soon as it's "submitted" ( ie. files sent to me or another developper for use in the game ).. remains your own copyright. You will, of course, get credits for your work. However, and that's my point, you are granting us the right to use it in the game. This right is not exclusive ( you can still use your own work in any way you see fit ). You can use this work in another project. You can even sell your work. It remains yours. But, once it's submitted and integrated, you cannot ask us to remove your work from the game - and that, independently of the way this project is heading ( commercial or not ).
Why this ? Simply to avoid having somebody submit a lot of work and once it's integrated and widely used in the game, ask something else in return... or want to remove it from the game. A specific scenario that i have in mind: as you know, Infinity is a MMOG. If you are both a contributor and a player, and if you cheat or break the rules ( hopefully that won't happen, but there's still a risk ), you might get kicked or banned. This could cause some conflicts and i do not want the project as a whole to suffer from the consequences of these conflicts.
If you do not agree with this "rule", your contribution will not be accepted. But i think everybody will agree that it's quite fair both for us the developpers, and you the contributor.

sounds reasonable.
-
I agree, it's pretty fair.
-
Please note, the best way to get the submissions to us is to post them on our forum. I will be here to check up, so you may post them in this thread, but I do not check it as often.
If absolutely necessary, you can e-mail me a [email protected].

I'm working on something but I want to make sure I'm gona be happy with it before I claim it.
-
If it's not too much trouble, how about I get a little reward for linking you Infinity lads up to our talent over here... maybe a small moon for mining or something, nothing too large? :p
-
Not really possible with the procedural generation of the galaxy, unless it was in one of the core systems. When you play, you can just claim one if you want.
-
Stop stealing Freespace modders damnit! :p
-
But they're soooo good!!!
Besides, the creator is releasing the I-Novae engine. If someone really wanted to, they could create a Freespace based Galaxy in a new game...I know I certainly wouldn't mind that...exploring into Shivan space with other players, trying to find Bosch...getting assraped by the next Sathanas fleet.
Actually, scratch that last one.
-
Well I've been working on this from one of your guys concepts...any good (you can kind of ignore the back half and it's missing the bottom)?

EDIT: Updated the image, please refresh window.

Looks pretty good so far. The nose spreads out a bit in the concept, but otherwise it looks like a nice model of that concept so far. I'll make sure to point Flavien this way so he can begin to consider hiring you.
-
well I might as well post what I've been able to through together thus far, I had to diverge from the concept on the comand deck as it didn't seem to fit with the rest of the ship, and I'm going to have to completely redo the front round thingy and the internals of the docking structure are mostly just roughed in at the moment.

Very nice model. Make sure to check the poly count on it though, every class is only reccomended a certain number of polygons, for gameplay sake.
Also, we have begun to develop a standard cargo module, you may want to check it out and try to modify that model to use the cargo container.

I found a design doc (http://www.fl-tw.com/Infinity/Docs/Ship%20Design%20Document.pdf) it sais for a 250 meter long freighter I should use 20,000 polies, wich is more than I was expecting, but I assumed this was high so it would still be high quality when the game is 'done' presumably years from now.
is this not acurate?
-
Yeah, you are right, it does say 20,000. You'll have to excuse me though, I don't know much about modelling yet (trying to learn). I've given Flavien a heads-up about the model, so I think he's taking a look at it. Once again, it'll make things easier for him if you post it in the contributions forum over on the Infinity boards.
Great job though.
-
when I'm happy with it I'll officaly claim it, wich will probly be soon as it's starting to come together.
though I have to admit 20,000 seems like a damned lot even for a next-gen engine.
and the engine makes it's own LODs?
wich forum should I use for asking technical questions about the engine?
I can code, and graphics are my specalty, there were a few simple tricks I implemented in FSO I think this engine could use, if it doesn't already.

Technical Forum (http://www.fl-tw.com/InfinityForums/viewforum.php?f=3)
Post here your technical questions about Infinity or its engine.
Hope you find good answers there.
