Say you are running the official build, and want to switch between that and a cvs build, what do you do? Have a separate folder for the launcher and... Everything or what? I know that’s kind of a broad question but I have to go in 2 minutes so ya.
I guess while im here Ill ask if anyone knows where I can get to fs2 cutscenes .avi, the mirrors I know , like the oracle one, all don't work anymore :-/ Ya, off topic, I know :-/

It's very easy. You simply select the .exe of your choice in the launcher. So you can run official builds, CVS builds or even retail without needing to change anything other than which .exe the launcher is set to use.
You still need to make sure that any mods you select are compatible with your chosen build, though. Newer media VPs for example won't work with older builds, and retail of course doesn't support any of the new stuff.
For cutscenes, check the FAQ by Karajorma. It's in the webring at the top of the forum page.

Hrmmm... I changed all the right things in the launcher and have the new CVS VP's in a completely differen't folder from the official's VPs and im getting this error:
AppName: fs2_open_r-p420060323.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.1 ModName: wrap_oal.dll
ModVer: 1.1.4.0 Offset: 0000b38f
*has the feeling he made a oopsy*
If I switch back to the Official everything is okey dokey tho.
Any advice.

you want the CVS builds in the main root folder right next to the officials.

Oh and by the way, karajorma's FAQ is no longer in the webring at top of page, or at least it isn't for me.......
To get .avi's, I got frustrated and simply decided to get the software to convert them myself, and it's a lot easier! I believe you can get the program.... somewhere I kinda forgot where. :D It's a command-prompt program so it might be easier simply totell the computer to open .mve's with it, rather than use it directly. Also, the resulting avi's are huge. Some over a gigabyte.
So you may want to get compression software as well. I use VirtualDub, which works fantastically.

Yeah, I do. However I am keeping my mv files in two different folders, and I use mod selection in the launcher to choose which folder (CVS or Official) to run out of. Last time I tried, official still was the only one that worked. I am almost 100% positive I didn't mix the mv's. I appreciate your assistance, though :D. Ill take any advice I can get.

Ill see if I can find it if not, its software hunting time. Thanks for the heads up. :D

Full details on where to find mve2avi and how to use it are in my FAQ on the same page as the links to the avi cutscenes.
As for running CVS builds. The exe should go in the same folder as the Official build. If you want to run the 3.6.8 Delta VPs though you will have to put those in a different folder from the 3.6.7 VPs as one will simply overwrite the other if you try to put them in the same folder.
There is nothing stopping you from running a CVS build and then picking the 3.6.7 VPs though. So if you are getting errors you should try to do that so as to determine where the problem is.

lol I figured out what it was. I forgot that I formatted and didn't have OpenAL installed. rofl
Gonna go read your faq now, :-D thanks for help.

Thanks for the help with the CVS build, but for some reason, unlike the official build. I can't get the engine exhaust trails to be the new ones and not the retail ones. Im sure there are probably other things that im just not seeing. Seem to be more stars to. O.o
-
If you are using recent CVS build (something after mid January) try adding this file (http://koti.mbnet.fi/vekkup/FS2/Species_defs.tbl) into /data/tables/ directory
-
K that fixed that problem. :-D Thanks. It still seems like there are 10 times more little tiny stars in the background then there were in the official, does this have something to do with anything?
-
Just the skybox model that was added to all the missions. I'm not particularly crazy about it myself, but it's not a bad thing. And it shouldn't be causing you too much slowdown either.

I'm not too crazy about the version in the MediaVPs myself. I changed the map for it to look at bit better (to me at least) and have been pretty happy with it all so far. I do cut back on the number of old-type stars though, mixing them too much doesn't look all that great.

I'd be interested in trying that map, taylor. Would you mind sharing it? :)

It's attached. I'm working on a new one though, with a bit better variation of patterns and colors. I'm doing 4 new ones total so that the missions in various systems can look a bit more varied. The current one is basically a generic default, the 4 new ones will make much more use of color and be a basic representation of the various systems (and named accordingly). I'll undoubtedly post those when I'm done with them (whenever that might be, I constantly fiddle with them :)).
