This may seem like a very noobish question...but I cant figure out how to scan stuff...

Scanning is done automatically to ships with unknown cargo.  However, you must be quite close (within 200 meters, I think) and you have to be facing toward the ship you want to scan.  Also the ship must be your current selected target.  For larger ships, you should try to aim towards the central area.  Remember, you can't scan everything, just unknowns.

It's 150 meters and the lead indicator must be in your reticle.
