okay so i'm playing fs1, and i'm in an asteroid field protecting the big ship from the asteroids. the problem is, i can't see any asteroids at all. it gives me the white targeting square and the distance to the asteroid, but the asteroids aren't showing up, so either i hit them by luck, or they run into me or the capital ship. is there a control that i haven't activated or something? i feel like last time i played this level (5 years ago or more) that i could see the asteroids? thanks for the help

This is on FS1 port or on FS1 itself?
-
ah, the port, i am playing it through fs2open (shivan's big download)
i don't suppose i'm missing the photo of the asteroid :)
-
i'm playing the level right now, and everyone's shots are just going right thru the area where the asteroids are shown in the white targeting brackets. every now and then there'll be a big explosion (the asteroid) except nothing is there. the explosion just appears...but you can see the stars, etc behind where it would be, it's not like it's a black patch or something in the way...weird

Could possibly be a mediavp problem. Try playing without them and see if that helps.
-
how do i do that? thanks for the help

IIRC you'll need to edit the mod.cfg (or similar) file in the fs1 mod folder. You'll need to take out the reference to MediaVPs, as this line directs the game to play the fs1 mod AND look in the MediaVPs folder for anyother Mods.
edit after Kara's post - Weeeelllllll... almost right! :p

Go to the FS1Port folder and open the mod.ini file.
In the file you will find a bit that says something like secondrylist = ,MediaVPs; Put a semicolon in front of this line and save the file.

You need to enable jpg,tga textures in the launcher.
I had the exact same problem in the first loop mission where you have to protect the Iceni, but enabling those textures solved it.

That does sound like a good possibility. Try that first :)

'h' targets the asteroids that you need to shoot in that mission, if that helps. Though we do need to see that those maps are replaced with DDS next time around.
